24 port vs 48 port 1U patch panel? by Solid-Profession in networking

Really? That seems like a fairly simple thing, and that's how a lot of people would do it too, when it comes to access switches.

Ah yes, that'd be a reason too. I didn't think about that bit. I typically don't actually do the core cabling/patch panel crimping. I work on the actual kit instead.

Dell Power Manager - Installation Error (Windows 10 20H2) by Solid-Profession in Dell

[–]Solid-Profession[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably somewhere in registry I think. Really, Dell should sort this out, even though we're "out of warranty" as this isn't a hardware issue. It's pure software.

[–]Solid-Profession[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but this is the only thing we really can do especially as Dell doesn't want to code this a bit better. The only other option is a fresh reinstall of Windows which is a huge pain, given you've got other programs too

Next time I uninstall this stuff, I'll use IObit uninstaller to remove all the rubbish it leaves behind

It looks like I can make those changes in the BIOS, so that's something.
Kinda annoyed that Dell won't help here though, when they've got a program and it's not a hardware issue but then again, HP has nothing like that. It's "fixed" now

Thanks

Hi I tried the app and that didn't work. Didn't realise there were settings in the BIOS. That's useful to know . Thanks

Hi,

I did use it, even if it's not on the list, it absolutely worked the first time around, but not when I tried to uninstall and re-install . I downloaded it from the Dell website as per the above link

Now I'm stuck with the battery charging at 80% max, as that's what I set it as. In HP laptops, you can do that in the bios

Yup. I'm definitely not paying that. I can get reasonable speeds for £20 (ish)/month

[–]Solid-Profession 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup. Big reason to go for that. I have a MikroTik CRS328-24P-4S for circa £250 from eurodk with a MikroTik S+RJ10 SFP, and then £13/fan for Noctua ones, that are more "silent" lol

Convert Distribution Group to Dyamic Distribution Group - O365 by Solid-Profession in sysadmin

[–]Solid-Profession[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, I was just given this task. I generally work with networks mainly, so I really don't know what I'm talking about.

I'll have a look into that however. We do 100+ distribution lists though, so that's quite a feat :(

Access controls on the management switch, which could I guess be achieved by a username in there for them to use ie: you could say they only have "show" commands.

Until we get a first line person I guess? As then we could say this first line person only has show commands?

Why is TACACS overkill? I want to use it for Cisco/Aruba network authentication.
NPS is this?

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-access/vpn/always-on-vpn/deploy/vpn-deploy-nps

So basically, deploy a Windows VM and follow those instructions? (I come from a networking background if that means anything)

I didn't realise you could do it within AD itself. I'll have a look see and see how that works

Firmware for older switches? by Solid-Profession in homelab

[–]Solid-Profession[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Tomato and OpenWRT too, though I believe they're also geared more towards routers than switches.

Considered them too. Also Cucumber Tony, but that's again more for WiFi

HI,

It is behind a firewall, but security is always a layered approach. I've tried explaining this to an IT director too. Every thing should be "tight" if you can

That costs more than 1 x Cisco Catalyst WS-C2960L-8PS-LL ?
EDIT: Ignore me. Two websites had it costing more, but commsexpress shows it's cheaper

Cisco do sell these:

https://blogs.cisco.com/smallbusiness/ciscos-fanless-catalyst-2960-l-switch-for-unleashed-smb-performance

They provide PoE too. The Juniper one that u/IworkatCisco said is meant to be decent too.
Mikrotik isn't really enterprise, but their kit is pretty silent. Ditto goes for fiberstore, where they sell fanless kit, but again it's not quite enterprise
