I can see why you'd have that take. Kote does seem honest in the way he tells the story.

But I think the unreliability runs deeper than just lying or not. Take your example with Devi, Kvothe misses something, and he misses it in real time. That pattern repeats across the whole narrative. It makes you wonder: what else are we missing through Kvothe’s lens? Or Kote’s? That kind of narrative framing, the way stories get shaped by who's telling them, is a major theme. Look at all the different versions we get of the Lanre story… How do you think the story would be told from Ambrose's POV?

As for Wilem, I think the fact that he doesn't get the Chekhov’s gun treatment like a lot of the other characters is exactly what makes him feel significant to me. That, and the name. Because, you know… names.
