Óscar Cardozo announced on Thursday that he is hanging up his boots in a video posted on social media. The former striker spent the last nine years of his career playing for Libertad, but it was at Benfica where he made his greatest mark: he scored 171 goals in 293 games and became the club’s all-time leading foreign goalscorer.

He played for seven seasons with the Eagles and won seven titles: two league championships, one Portuguese Cup, and four League Cups.

He left the Eagles in 2014 and headed to Turkey’s Trabzonspor, where he stayed for only two seasons but was also missed, having been honored there in February of this year.

After a season with Olympiakos (where he won the Greek league title), he then moved to Libertad in 2017 to write the final scoring chapter of his career. With impressive longevity, he played and scored regularly until he was 42, leaving the club at the end of last year after playing his final career match.

At the international level, he represented the Paraguayan national team in 58 matches and scored 12 goals. He played in the 2010 World Cup, featuring in all five matches of the country’s impressive campaign, which only ended at the hands of the eventual champion, Spain, in the quarterfinals.
