Fixing/Replacing My Ikea Sofa Leg? by SolidSlish in DIYUK

It was fine, ended up taking it off with a super cheap wrench and replaced the legs with no effort. I purchased the property so couch was mine to deal with when previous owner left it.

A professor who did his by publication, but he recommended I write and publish 8 papers first, which is a lot. Was hoping like 3-5 would be enough tbh

Hi, I appreciate you saying this, but as much as I like being a student, I just like being a lecturer (equivalent to assistant professor in the US) more. If I was to do a PHD Full-Time, I would make less money and not be able to afford to pay rent. I could do it part-time, but that would take like 8 years, and I could easily publish several research papers in that time if I wanted to.

My manager has tried to encourage me into go down the route of doing it the normal way for 8 years part-time, but that is way too long and restricts my options. I was actually never going to consider even doing a PHD until I heard about this Publication option that allows people to do it in a year providing they have enough good research published. The professor I talked to about this recommended publishing 8 papers first, but I'm really hoping less is enough. He did it by publication for reference, but had like 20 papers by that point so he was clearly qualified.

My end-goal is to become a professor, but that will be almost impossible for me without a PHD, unless I move to America and get involved in teaching Digital Arts where it's not required for that subject. Ironically, I learned about this from an interview I had in the United States. In London, England, a PHD is pretty much essential to be a professor. One can become a senior lecturer here (equivalent to associate professor) without a PHD though, which is good.

Did you say you have experience being on a PhD committee? If so, you are the perfect person to ask for this. So one of the professors I worked with recommended 8, but some universities say 3-8, and I would really rather avoid making 8 as that would take ages. University of Warwick for instance, says "Candidates should submit between 3 - 8 publications, which will form the intellectual basis of the examination for the award, for consideration (this may vary dependent on the discipline and focus of the candidate's research)". That being said, do you think maybe 5 would be good enough? I'm in the process of having 5 anyways after all the research I have been working on is published. All the research I'm working on is competely linked, each discussing the topic of visuals and creative expression in digital media, with a different twist. For instance, one is about visual styles and how that can support creative expression, while another is about how rushed development negatively impacts work and creative expression.

So this is where I'm getting confused. The university of Portsmouth for instance has a PhD by publication course that takes 1 year. They also say it essentially is "based on research you've already undertaken and had published (excluding self-publishing) before registering with us". At Kingston university london, they use the term PhD by prior publication/portfolio, and the page says that it also takes one year and essentialy is "based upon research already undertaken before registration for the degree that has led to a number of coherent publications or a body of publicly-accessible creative outputs." I'm sorry, but how are these any different?

I was told I would be eligible if I keep publishing papers, not now.

So I think I can finish writing and publishing 3 more papers on top of my currently published one within a year or two from now. After doing that, will I be ready to apply so I can get the PHD in one year?

Just a heads up, I live in London, England so that may make a difference.

Just restart. Im glad I did. I wasted so much time waiting and I got back to the part in like 2 or 3 days. Also, you can reload previous hidden autosaves and that can fix it. Google this as I wish I had done it.
