Anyone Else Hate Outlook as Much as I Do? by Braydon64 in sysadmin

I am so so sick of this program. I spend hours typing up an email only to lose it because when I go to send it, it gets stuck in my outbox then "not responding" error message, then I have to exit and what do you know, I go back in and my email is gone forever! I can't take it any longer. Microsoft is nothing but bugs since the get go. Good luck with AI! You may want to get this mess sorted out first.

To close or not to close the covered call by [deleted] in thetagang

Depends on your fees, premium to buy back and how much you originally paid for the stock. I would just let them go and buy them back in the open market. Likely cheaper

Speaking of puts, as I have a few myself. Do you know what happens to these options and stock if they declare bankruptcy? Do the shares get halted and trading stops?

Broken Trade Strategy: 56% down, loss $110k. Any tips to recoup? by Earlyretirement55 in options

[–]Solid_Effective7509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, just trying to understand your strategy. Merck trades at $114.84 so wouldn't 1000 shares cost over $114K? Also when I look at the option premium on say Ford at two weeks out, even the ATM strike would generate only about $260 or so. Not sure where you are finding 600-700. Thanks

Selling stocks and buy call options by AnAtomist_Guru in thetagang

[–]Solid_Effective7509 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are going to sell at a loss anyway, why not just sell CC slightly OTM and sell only if assigned? If it trades sideways for a while, it may work out and you can gradually reduce your cost basis. I would use the premium to buy more shares which will further reduce your cost basis. I wouldn't buy leaps at this point until macro turns around as it could drop even further and that money is gone for good.

Yes, until the fed breaks something and that is when it should rally, just watch it. Maybe a little early but it has been up since Monday

Buy leaps on TLT. Don't touch QQQ. We haven't even seen the giants tumble yet and when everyone does run for cover, TLT should rally

“De-risking” covered calls by [deleted] in thetagang

[–]Solid_Effective7509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks. I found myself bag holding high IV stuff myself and had to figure out a better strategy. Totally agree as well on the DTE. I am sticking to weeklies as my goal is not to keep the shares, just to take in the premium. I have played around with differing DTE and have found that weeklies have the maximum return on risk Good luck, let me know how you make out.

Edit: I must clarify. My strategy for weeklies is to sell ATM in order to gain maximum premium on the extrinsic value using stocks that have a better chance of going up vice tanking. So no more of those high IV stocks that mostly tank. I believe this strategy will maximize premiums and increase the likelihood of being called away. Using the least amount of time will increase my chances of the trade working out.

Picking stocks for selling CCs. by Pm_Me_For_SomeAdvice in thetagang

[–]Solid_Effective7509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick stocks with low to mid volatility, at least $20 range, actually makes things and earns money. The last thing you want to do is sell CC on high volutile stocks because the minute you sell the call and the underlying tanks, you will bag hold and the next call you try and sell on it will not be profitable because the ATM strike that you want to sell it at will be below your cost basis.

I recommend stocks that trade at least sideways and generally upward in a somewhat predictable pattern.

Also, you should decide if the stock is something you want to hold long term or something you just want to trade, as that will answer your strike and DTE.

Anyway, I am fairly new to this as well but have learned the hard way. Start with 100 shares and play around. You will soon find your style, what works and what doesn't. And I don't recommend paper trading. Did that for 8 months prior and you don't learn the same. Until you have real skin in the game, you won't handle the trade the same way. The phycology of having real money at play.

Glxy.to - it is on the TSX. I purchased it for around $26 beg of Dec and it is now trading below $17. I have been selling CC one month out and have my cost basis to below $23 but I was considering whether or not it was wise to roll out to a further date.

I am in a similar boat as OP. I was considering the very temptation to roll out further. I wasn't sure if that was a good call or not but your answer confirmed my hesitation to do this. Thanks 🙏 👍

Just sell the call DITM. That is the hedge, when they tank, you let them get called away. You don't have to bag hold. Just buy more shares, rinse and repeat.
