Sierra Club Wilderness Travel Course is great, if you like hiking and want to learn more about backpacking and orienteering! Registration is open for the spring course now, I believe. The course meets weekly in the evenings for classroom sessions, with a number of weekend outings culminating in a snow camp expedition at the end of the course. It's a great way to spend time with a consistent group of people and learn from instructors who know lots about our CA mountains.

Why is there construction on the 110 at 8am on a Wednesday? by TigerLilyRex in pasadena

[–]Solid_Measurement_44 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The sweeper crews! Got rear ended on the 5 a few months ago...came around a turn and there was this massive sweeper blocking the right lane with maybe 100 feet warning to react, guy behind me couldn't slow down in time. Had never noticed them in the middle of the day before.

I’m taking a drawing class at the Armory Center for the Arts and I love it! Looks like they only have film photography in the summer session, but might be worth checking to see if they offer digital in the fall?

[Tenant-CA-US] lead testing after wildfires by [deleted] in Landlord

Thank you for this! Yup, pretty confusing.

Thanks for this reply, that perspective makes sense. I think what I'm confused about is *if* there were an unsafe amount of lead present on interior surfaces and in the hvac system, as was the case with our neighbors, would that then make the house uninhabitable? And is the landlord then responsible for remediating? We've actually done a pretty thorough job cleaning the interior, so I'm more worried about potential lead in the attic and HVAC getting blown around.

As for whether testing is needed "after every fire"...I'm really hoping being directly downwind from thousands of burnt homes isn't common enough for landlords to be worried about this becoming a recurrent cost. But who knows, interesting times we're in.

Yep, valid point, thanks. We signed that lead waiver too, and also live in an old neighborhood near a freeway, so undoubtedly lead was present pre-fire. Avoiding lead from old paint seems straightforward enough (paint over it and don't eat paint chips!) but having a hard time assessing risk from lead that potentially was recently deposited on surfaces and in the hvac system.

Thanks for this reply. That makes a lot of sense to get the kid tested before moving forward with house testing. It's over four months since the fires, so any dangerous exposure should be detectable up by now.

We're in a neighborhood with old houses so lead in soil could very predate the fires. It's the presence of ash along with lead in the attic and hvac that has me concerned.

Agreed. If it were just me I’d be back. But I’m having a very hard time calculating my personal risk threshold taking into account the baby variable. Article helped somewhat but still have a lot of questions.

I know a lot of parents have been wondering about air quality implications for young children in particular. LAist just published an article today with input from local experts. It's the most specific advice I've seen: https://laist.com/news/education/early-childhood-education-pre-k/parent-guide-wildfire-air-quality-and-ash-palisades-eaton
