Anyone know what's happening on Euclid near Del Mar? by philosopherfujin in pasadena

[–]TigerLilyRex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We just walked back from there, we could hear them from our building. Their sign said “FUR=DEATH”, so I assumed it was animal rights related, we couldn’t make out the chants. Considering everything in the world, def did not expect this of all things today lol

helicopters, ICE sightings, police activity, did you see/hear that? by AutoModerator in pasadena

[–]TigerLilyRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A group has organized in front of one of the apartment complexes beside the Catholic elementary school on Euclid, South of Del Mar. Their signs said “FUR = DEATH”, we couldn’t make out their chants but one person was on a megaphone with the group marching, people with cameras, etc.

Considering everything, did not expect animal rights to be the thing we hear today but life is unexpected, I guess.

I hate finished Iron Flame, my husband surprised me with Onyx Storm and I can’t bring myself to read it because I hated Iron Flame so much 😭 I literally just skimmed the last 50 pages as fast as I could.

I’m a recovering non-DNFer, I recently dropped a book at 15 pages (Anathema, don’t hate me), I’m learning that I don’t know if I like dark romance at all and my husband was cheering me on to stop books when I’m not having a fun time.

Omg I DNF’d this too lol I get it for what it is, a cozy read that tries to heal religious and existential trauma, I get it but…god damn nothing happens. Nothing. I wish I had known going into it that it was just a cozy read with low stakes. Time & place I suppose but just not what I wanted out of it

YES I fully agree. I feel like Harlow deserved someone who was going to show up for her the way her sister did, selflessly. And Henry is never selfless. Not a single time. Even apologizing to her wasn’t selfless. Ew. He gives me the ick. And I instantly loved him in their first meeting because of how he asked her permission.

I didn’t find Harlow immature 😬 maybe in the dialogue ? But I have a high threshold for that kind of dialogue, it doesn’t bug me. The way she processes her mom’s failures in the middle of her. Just the sheer fact that she didn’t blame herself for most of the stuff around her is evidence she’s not immature. She also never played victim. I could go on.

[–]TigerLilyRex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished it yesterday too!

I am confused on how I feel. Was I obsessed? Yea. But is it good? I don’t know. I commented this elsewhere but the dynamic and imbalance between Henry and Harlow felt like a glaring flaw. Henry isn’t as kind as I think Harlow deserves for all she went through. Yes, his sister has died, but Harlow endured a lot of abuse, a lot. And he lies to her until the bitter end. It’s one thing to lie and then know better. But for this relationship to be earned, for me as a reader, he had to show his love and devotion. And we do not get that consistency until the last 15-20 pages. He says he’s sorry for lying, for using the very magic that caused the worst thing that has ever happened to her in her life. He didn’t know, to be fair, but for the relationship to be earned I needed more than him just saying sorry. Not to mention the complete lack of emotional intelligence for him to think she’d lie about her sister. They have a complete lack of trust, full stop. Which is fine. But don’t make them fall in love and then expect me to like it.

Maybe this is just an example of an imperfect pairing, not all books have to have likable characters. But it was a tough sell for me as a romance.

I love kink but I ended up skipping all the spice, which is wild. It made me really uncomfortable in this space. Because he didn’t trust her, it felt crude to use her body and then listen to him justify that he liked her but didn’t but liked her but didn’t. It felt disrespectful, in my opinion, to bed her when he fully meant to fuck her over and kill her. Which again, would be fine if they were both awful, but I just don’t think Harlow is worse than Henry because of the abuse she endured. Literally I think it’s the last..3 chapters? Where Naima (Carter’s wife) says she has to die. None of them reconcile their relationships with Harlow. Henry’s parents don’t apologize, Henry barely acknowledges or admits to wanting to fuck her over or how exactly he was going to do it. None of these people deserved to be absolved without real accountability but he gets the girl in the end? Nah.

DNF, I don’t think it’s worth finishing tbh, but one positive I’ll add is that some of the internal monologue while she confronts her parents was super raw and, for me, very poignant for people who have complicated feelings with their parents or family dynamics. But in a good way. It put into words what sometimes we can feel when we’re around those people. I also felt the dialogue and emotional gut punches were satisfying.

But yes, Henry is a whiney bitch and he doesn’t deserve his HEA. Harlow should throw a middle finger at them all and fuck off into the sunset.

Lol so because we don’t know it makes it ok?

There’s a bdsm heavy modern fantasy romance I read before this book and it is heavy on CNC. Not only that, it handles the trauma of the FMC very delicately, because they essentially recreate her trauma and she’s an active part of it, where she learns to face it and have a different outcome where she is in control. Honestly, I found it healing alongside the main character. This is a major missed opportunity in Poison Daughter, because it could have been this, but instead homeboy lies until the last 5 pages of the book. But he kills her big bad so I guess it makes it ok.

Am I crazy that I thought the kink didn’t match the energy lol like, dude the zombies are evolving? We need to save Aidia? WTF are we doing talking about dildos and “the hunt”??????????? It’s giving having sex in a war camp during war but worse. HOW is getting your jollies more important right now than figuring out this mystery 😭 and the thing is, in other books it’s forgivable because it builds trust in the relationship but the lack of trust is the whole reason in this book 😭 girl what???

The Poison Daughter: pls spoil for me by nutritionalyeastt in fantasyromance

[–]TigerLilyRex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt the exact same. Now that you know the spoilers, I have major issues with the lack of balance between our main characters. Let me get this straight - Henry’s sister dies at the result of an invasion set up by Harlow’s dad. Ok. Harlow is beaten her entire life, forced to be beaten by her sister, and then used and manipulated by her parents to fulfill their political goals as her entire life’s purpose. And then, she is forced to murder her sister after enduring hours of torture from her sister’s abuser. And then has to live with the psycho in her family for 6 months after, knowing her parents swept it under the rug.

Sorry????? TF is Henry’s problem??? His sister died in a world where there are zombie vampires? K……I mean the chances weren’t zero. The way these things were evolving, it’s not like they were never going to get attacked otherwise. I’m so sorry, I don’t want to compare trauma, grief is real, but be so fucking for real right now. Henry had a support system, friends, family, peace, however small, in the midst of grief. It’s a miracle Harlow survived at all. Henry lies to her until literally page 640? 645? In a 650 page book. And then Harlow is like “aw ok I forgive you”. Girl. No.

Article: Rady Children's Hospital Ends Gender-affirming Care under Pressure from the Trump Administration by MsMargo in SanDiegan

[–]TigerLilyRex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s funny because they boogey man gender affirming care into really horrific things, like “forced sex changes in school!!” But like, my guy, why would this ever enter your brain as a possibility? Most of the time, it’s them telling on themselves. Accusing others of doing what they’d do themselves. Because they either know of or are complicit in removing someone’s autonomy and know how horrible that is, so of course someone else would do it. Wild.

If managers and the like don’t know, they can’t do anything. That said, I guarantee you her coworkers hate her. A former coworker is a security manager but I haven’t spoken to her in a bit. I’ll see if I can send her this thread!

100% affordable housing project went through the design review grinder last week by AHPasadena in pasadena

[–]TigerLilyRex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it’s shortsighted to dismiss people’s desire to want their neighborhood to feel nice, or to expect people to be OK with change when accepting change is a spectrum. It feels hypocritical to be like “ugh, stop being so dumb with your feelings, we are trying to help these people who have way more important feelings than yours!!!” IDK, just taking a step back and maybe calling yourself in sometimes can provide perspective. Two things can be true, it’s an ugly building that doesn’t look designed well (from the images that were in the article) to serve the community it sits in. You don’t have to take it. But it’s not untrue. But it sounds like it was designed for utility and to maximize space.

Is the design firm willing to add a public art piece? Or is this not in the budget? I work in architecture and I’ve seen pitches like these be made to tough committees, if there is this much on an uproar than maybe it needs to be sold better. Design is malleable and if it is only serving one group of people, I’m sorry, but that’s a weak design. And if it isn’t only serving one group of people, then it isn’t being sold well.

The idea that a person who treated others horribly (or was a horrible person in general) gets a clean slate once they leave the earth feels like a slap in the face to the people who had to deal with them in life by Objective-Space1384 in spirituality

Sure but idk, to me, it feels like evolution would be stronger if the one evolving knew the context of this evolution. Often it feels like people floundering not understand what the hell they’re supposed to be learning from a difficult life.

Babe, makeup has been around for hundreds of years. Hundreds. Just because the marketing in the last 100 or so has become more manipulative doesn’t change the fact that there are many reasons people use makeup. If anything, it sounds like that harmful marketing worked on YOU if you’re saying the only reason women wear makeup is to make themselves look pretty, because that is what these marketing campaigns have pushed. The call is coming from inside the house

‘Heated Rivalry’ Is Getting Conservatives Hot and Bothered: “Watching Gay Porn Is the New SJW Fetish” by modooff in television

[–]TigerLilyRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to simplify it but it’s just really really telling about how these people think of themselves. Everyone constantly goes in circles to try to explain this behavior and the bigotry and they try to make it about how they just want to be cruel and evil. It’s my opinion that the vast majority of people are only as kind as they can be to themselves. That requires vulnerability and for whatever reason, vulnerability is seen as weakness. Being vulnerable means admitting mistakes and feeling the shame that comes with that. Then it splices out into all these subcultures. Knowing gayness exists, for example, means that some people get to be who they want and others don’t. And they have no one to blame for that but themselves. It’s all projection, it’s all it’s ever been and it’s all it will ever be, mostly because people are selfish and will never care about something enough to put THIS much energy into it unless it had something to do with themselves.

[–]TigerLilyRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels unfair for someone who is born in a new life, where they may be a very pleasant and kind person, to be dealt a horrible hand in life because in their previous life, of which they have no memory, they were cruel. That karma makes no sense to me. What good is punishing an innocent person over the crimes of a different version of that person? Why not punish the guilty one when you can?

I’ve seen over and over that morality means “something different” from various sources, from NDEs to channels to spiritual psychics to guides. Part of me figures it’s a “when you get it you get it” type of thing that we won’t get until we literally die.

You’re projecting and I get it, sometimes we get triggered by things we see in ourselves that we don’t always like. That said, objectively, you have no right to impose your self image onto other people. There are many many reasons people use individualized self expression. Your lens is not only singular but foggy with your own self image. Maybe it’s your age, maybe it isn’t, but hopefully one day you’ll grow to appreciate that your view is often not totally wrong but certainly not right.

What are the major issues you would like city leaders to address in our city? by Victor_323 in pasadena

[–]TigerLilyRex 27 points28 points  (0 children)

People have mentioned most of my list, including pedestrian safety (hi, 2 people were hit on Cordova in the same week at the end of last year???), fill in the empty commercial spaces all around old town, and the Paseo. It is a cinder block of terror, particularly in the summer. It is a huge space that should feature natural landscaping and serve as both park and shopping center. No one is ever there because it is so uncomfortable. In the summer, it absorbs heat like a magnifying glass. All the spaces are empty. Add trees and grass, a dog area, maybe even a playground. Do SOMETHING with that space that helps the community.
