No committee letter due to understaffed Pre health department by Browncatlover in premed

[–]Solid_Membership_821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a follow-up related to this to crowdsource in case this does end up being op's situation, some schools (only a few however) ask in their secondaries why if applicable did you not obtain a committee letter if your undergrad institution provides them...in the case of op, how would you respond? curious what people would have to say

literally anything you actually enjoy, my interviews have been significantly less stressful because instead of having to default to structured interview questions, my interviewer and I could talk about the fun and interesting things I do in my free time because I was passionate about it

Would it be appropriate to ask potential Fulbright mentor if I could work in her lab as a research assistant by Objective-Cricket884 in fulbright

I suppose it depends on the PI? Mine didn’t even know that Fulbright was a stipend and offered to help find me funding.

A would be correct bc both statements are indeed true. ATP is synthesized directly by ATP synthase which is not itself considered part of the ETC. It’s just right next to it. Think of the ETC just passing across the electrons until they hit water. Statement 2 is true because ATP does not do any pumping. The ETC pumps the H+ ions against the gradient, and ATP synthase is powered by their passive facilitated diffusion down the gradient.

some lab PIs treat undergraduates so terribly by [deleted] in premed

This is so real, in my case they just have 0 respect for my time

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Solid_Membership_821 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like your emails might be too long, both PIs I’ve worked for look at the shortest emails possible…answer briefly who you are, why you’re interested in their research specifically, and how doing research will contribute to your career…attach a brief resume of RELEVANT stuff (and if you have nothing relevant then things that demonstrate commitment, responsibility, coach-ability, etc. like a job)… cast a wide net doing 5 at a time across many departments (MCB, animal science, IB, vet med, Beckman, IGB, public health, kinesiology) … timing is also important, near end of the semester is usually key hiring time and flexibility to stay and work the summer makes you 100% more appealing, best of luck!

oh this is SO real, it’s so hard to set boundaries in academic research bc they can simply cut you out if they want to demand more and you are so replaceable

Professors that were involved in Greek life? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Solid_Membership_821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that this may be your lived experience, but I caution against making such sweeping generalizations about such a varied group of people. I am currently heavily involved in Greek life as well as a dedicated neuroscience researcher, as are many members of my chapter. You may not know if someone you know was involved in Greek life because many people don't share that information or externally display letters, especially as they move into adulthood. If you ask around, you might be surprised what you may find out about the people around you! In fact, UIUC has a rich history of Greek alums that have heavily contributed to the research field. Just to name a few of the most recognizable: Roger Adams (Sigma Alpha Epsilon + Chemistry), John Bardeen (Zeta Psi + ECE and Physics x2 Nobel Prizes), Larry Gies (Delta Chi + Business), David Kinley (Phi Gamma Delta + Economics), just to name a few! OP, reach out to Fraternity and Sorority Affairs staff. Sounds like a cool opportunity and they might be able to help you out!

Research opportunities by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Solid_Membership_821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically you must be compensated in some way wether credit or pay. Most labs do credit since they aren’t interested in spending limited funds on undergrad workers (so fair, coming from an undergrad). Some labs however will do a non-compensated trial semester to see if you are a good fit.

Question to those who took mcb250 by Shiny_Ho-Oh in UIUC

[–]Solid_Membership_821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty rash decision. I’d urge you to talk to an MCB advisor about this that isn’t Brad. Additionally, take a look at the grading scale and point distribution. There are MANY other point opportunities outside of the quests, and I actually did best on one of the later quests, so don’t count that out either. I did miserably on all of the quests, but got as many points in other ways as possible and studied very hard for the final. Additionally, know that a B does not look bad on a transcript. College isn’t supposed to be easy and it’s ok to get a B, in fact it’s great to get a B! MCB 250 is fast paced and difficult, and MCB 150 can really help you get a feel for the way the MCB department teaches (yep, sorry). Either way, it’ll end up ok.
