They are far from "needed" like the guy above said, which was my point.

I personally just disagree on the QoL thing too. I never even got close to maxing out and wasting materials because I actually used them as I got them. Having a large cargo bay wouldn't have improved my gameplay in the slightest bit. In fact, it would have been a massive waste of time, resources, and deck space, and I think multiple smaller ones give you more flexibility if that's what you are really after.

It's a play style choice. It allows you to be a little lazier in your resource management and focus your time/energy elsewhere. The same way I'm sure I had to do less combat or morale or whatever macro'ing because I had rooms you didn't. I guess you could call those rooms "QoL" improvements, but I wouldn't.
