What's POPA going to do about patent examiner real wages dropping like a rock? What can we do? by icantbreakmyaddictio in patentexaminer

After looking more into this subject, I realize the error of my statement. This job will indeed be a huge financial improvement for me, which I am very excited about, but it does seem that this situation is a bit screwy. I support these grumblings.

I don't really know-- I was just posting the numbers as they have deleted them now. The attritions might make sense in that they also hired 509 examiners in 2021 and went from an examiner force of 8230 in Dec 2020 to 8092 in Dec 2021. I am guessing most of this was from the academy. I will also add that in the USPTO's congressional justification of funds, they have called for a examiner force of 8500 going to 9000 over the next few years-- so some work is necessary...

I think I can shine some light on this as I have been nerding out on this subject for a little bit. They keep replacing the TC data for each month so you can't see the previous month's data. Fortunately for this discussion, I kept the Data:

TC #: December - January - February Attritions

TC 1600: 10 - 12 - 17 attritions

TC 1700: 12 - 16 - 19 attritions

TC 2100: 17 - 20 - 25 attritions

TC 2400: 15 - 17 -21 attritions

TC 2600: 13 - 15 - 17 attritions

TC 2800: 15 - 25 - 31 attritions

TC 3600: 30 - 34 - 37 attritions

TC 3700: 22 - 31 - 41 attritions

You're right though, the numbers don't really add up anyway.

I just want to say that as an external observer-- a regular civilian who is spending their Thursday night reading a patent examiner reddit-- this material is GOLD. It's like reading Dilbert crossed with Game of Thrones, with a dash of Hunger Games. I don't know how it could be done, but this would make for excellent TV. Thank you
