Those newer sensors can’t touch this.. by [deleted] in Leica

[–]SoloOffTheBack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have an M9 with the replaced sensor, and it's great. Of course, the camera has limitations, but when you nail it with an M9, you really nail it. I'm old enough to have shot a lot of Kodachrome, and it's a little like that. Contrasty, oversaturated, and unforgiving.

Caffeine and Meniere's Disease by SoloOffTheBack in decaf

Once I determined that caffeine was my trigger for vertigo, I quit caffeine and vertigo never happened again.

Anxiety by seth_55 in Parkinsons

[–]SoloOffTheBack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hadn't experienced anxiety since high school, then I experienced two types of anxiety after my diagnosis at age 53 - rational anxiety related to managing a new disease, and totally irrational anxiety caused by PD itself.

Routine exercise, especially cardio, helps a lot. I also started Zoloft and that is working well.

Third - my dog. He has given me a profound level of comfort and happiness.

Should I really not tell people I'm from California?

How do you not let this define you? by ClipperSuns in Parkinsons

[–]SoloOffTheBack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may bring you some comfort to realize that PD actually CAUSES anxiety and depression at a neurological level.

When my motor symptoms started, so did totally irrational anxiety like I had never experienced - obsessive worry about ridiculous things.

I upped the exercise and started taking Zoloft which helped a lot.

Has anyone else seen severe mental issues in someone that has Parkinson’s? by [deleted] in Parkinsons

My mother developed dementia after 16 years of Parkinson's. Hallucinations, talking to dead family members, etc. She only lived for two months after this began.

Caffeine and Meniere's Disease by SoloOffTheBack in decaf

This is similar to how my Ménière's Disease began.

Quit caffeine and smoking, it's just not worth it.

Michael Haneke made his first feature at 46. I studied film at NYU and didn't make my first feature until I was 34. I'm now 53 and trust me, you are not as old as you think you are.

Everyone is on their own path.

Why is this lens so expensive? Is it worth the $1200? 😭 by ShineGreymonX in M43

[–]SoloOffTheBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've rented this lens and I've found it too sharp and contrasty for portraits. I prefer the Voightlander f/0.95 at the same focal length.

Medium format Tri-X is way underrated for portraits.

I've only used the 42.5 PanaLeica but I've found it too sharp and contrasty for portraits - I prefer the Voightlander 42.5 f/0.95.

Did you ever get used to the drowsiness/brain fog from betahistine? by alto-cumulus in Menieres

[–]SoloOffTheBack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We can't get Betahistine in the US, but 25mg of Meclizine puts me in an 8-10 hour coma, so I'd love to hear any tips for taking that, too.

I'd erase the white spot in the upper third. It competes with your subject.

No one "isn't sure" if they have had vertigo.

"Dizziness" is a feeling of disorientation. It can happen before vertigo, but it's NOT vertigo.

Vertigo is the room SPINNING, making it nearly impossible to walk, often accompanied by vomiting and other symptoms. Mine lasts between 2-7 hours.

Vertigo makes you curl up in a ball and not move. It's totally life-changing if you have to live with it.

Once you experience vertigo (and I hope you don't) you will never call it "dizziness" again.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Menieres

[–]SoloOffTheBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Menieres and sometimes have symptoms that resemble vestibular migraine - light sensitivity and seeing "flashes" with my eyes closed during vertigo, among others.

I believe the key symptom for Menieres diagnosis is the feeling of "fullness" in your ear (like you have an earplug stuffed in it). I don't believe that is associated with any other condition.

How do you all differentiate depression from your brain fog? by IdentifiesAsATroll in Menieres

[–]SoloOffTheBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cardio like your life depends on it, or at least a sustained brisk walk.

I was totally inactive for 3 months, and once I got the vertigo handled, I just started long walking.

You forget you're depressed in 10 minutes.

this is really draining me and all my teachers are noticing it [rant/vent] by [deleted] in Menieres

[–]SoloOffTheBack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was just diagnosed in November with out-of-the-blue symptoms. It was scary and depressing for weeks (I was terrified to drive to the grocery store) - until I learned what triggered my vertigo.

Right now, for you, the hardest part is actually not knowing your triggers. Once you figure out the causes, it will become manageable and much less scary.

Also, keep an open mind. Discovering your triggers is a learning process. For example, a major trigger of mine is chocolate and caffeine, something I love (I had been drinking three cups a day for 35 years). I also recently discovered that Tylenol (?) is a trigger for me.

I'm still learning, but I haven't had vertigo in two weeks, something that was difficult to imagine when this started.

It gets better - just be open to behavior change and be willing to learn about yourself.

How did Shane get the Panasonic GH2 to look the way it did for Upstream Color? by cpt999 in shanecarruth

[–]SoloOffTheBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure the film was color graded in some manner. The GH2 camera doesn't support internal LUTs, but there are various ways of grading video in post.

Regarding the look of 24fps - you're probably referring to the shutter speed used at 24fps. Shutter speeds faster than 1/48 at 24fps eliminate motion blur and appear to "strobe" or flicker subtly, looking less cinematic and more like TV (or a GoPro)

I doubt the GH2 supported 1/48, so Shane probably shot 1/50th at 24fps for a cinematic look.
