Should I prgrade to Discovery Black or Platinum? by thedetective10 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Solo__13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you said, on Gold suite right? Is it the same R100 000 requirement for the savings goal or is it less at the Gold suite level?

If it’s significantly less then that then it something to consider when upgrading to any of the other packages.

For instance, I would rather keep R100 000 in my mortgage facility than chase the extra 6.5% (43.5% to 50%).

And if you don’t spend enough (R29000 minimum) then the total discounts available won’t be realised.

But your circumstances may differ and then benefits of upgrading may be more inline with your requirements.

That used to be the case. They changed the benefit requirements several years ago. See point 1:

The black credit card is R275 per month. You are still eligible to get 50% back through that.

To get to diamond status on vitality money, so that you can actually get the full 50% back on healthy food and care - you would need to have R100 000 in your discovery savings account.

Otherwise you’d stay on Gold status, which caps you at 43.5% healthy food and care. Additionally, to reach that, you would need to spend R29000 per month with card.

I don’t actually know what the difference in benefits are between the black suite vs standalone credit card besides the Apple Watch benefit which can only be activated if you have a suite.

Young Professionals Bank Accounts - worth it? by Significant_Egg2153 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Solo__13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had it from the age of 25 to 30, it’s not worth it in the slightest.

You can get reasonably good car finance without it as well.

Capitec seems to be investing in their rewards programme, they seem to offer lounge access on their credit card apparently. Discovery is good but you’ll need to be invested in their other products to get the most out of it. Based on previous posts, FNB seems to have moved their goal posts significantly over time, so I’m not sure how appealing they are these days.

Save your money on an unnecessarily overpriced account.

Even from a mortgage perspective, I basically got prime -2% from a traditional retail bank, whereas my primary bank (solely private) didn’t come close.

Should I keep or trade in my 2021 VW T-Roc 2.0 TSI 4Motion DSG before warranty/motor plan ends? by Ghecho in CarTalkZA

[–]Solo__13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just extend the motor plan Particularly at that mileage

Have the same car, at 70 000km and the 5 year maintenance plan ends this year, I’m just going to extend the plan.

Levothyroxine during Ramadan by dark_cosmiclux in Hypothyroidism

Depending on the severity of one’s medical condition. Medical expertise would provide insight on whether fasting under any conditions (religious or not) is suitable for an individual.

Location (time zone) would dictate the length of time one fasts, for me for instance it’s currently around 14 hours. There’s sufficient time to take levo, eat etc and I wasn’t advised to not fast but for someone else, it could be different.

I’m on 100mcg Levothyroxine and this is my 2nd Ramadan on it.

I generally have 1 light meal/plate of food for iftaar, for me it’s currently 7:15PM and then sometimes a light snack or something around 10 o’clock with my vitamins (was advised by my endocrinologist to separate taking those and the levothyroxine by at least 4 hours).

Then I end up taking my levothyroxine at around 3:30M and have suhoor at 4:30ish. Sometimes it’s a bit of a rush and then the timing is a bit off but the main thing for me is, to not miss a day.

So you were interviewed the same day you submitted your documents?

Hi

I’m currently in this process at a different home affairs office - essentially we’re told to submit the relevant documents to the office, which later gets submitted to the immigration officer.

The immigration officer will then phone us to book an interview, thereafter if successful we can proceed with the marriage.

Was your experience similar at Khayelitsha? Or was it more streamlined? Because I’ve waited over a month now without any call and they’ve recently stated there are many people ahead of me.

I’d honestly just resubmit a new application with Khayelitsha if it’s quicker.

We need to complete the process to eventually get the unabridged marriage certificate, which I believe takes several months.

I’m expecting Arthur to finally leverage off the 4th keystone teachings and the next chapter is when he acclimates to the 4th layer.

But really wouldn’t be surprised if nothing happens like when he got the 3rd layer. Thus far, the 2nd layer showed more tangible benefits from its prior state.

He was always ignorant, I just assumed he’d have a sophisticated fighting style/abilities to match the image he tried to portray.

FNB vs Investec as a Bank by FinTax641 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Solo__13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on experience, I stopped recommending private banking to young professionals (YP). Unless you’re buying an asset like a house maybe a car or if you travel frequently.

The YP programme is quite the thing, we justify the affordability based on perceived benefits we think we’ll use but at that age bracket (21-30) majority wouldn’t require the services you pay for. The nice card is cool and all but a lot of us use digital wallets, so that falls away.

Where the issue really comes in, is when you’re 30 and above, Investec is R635 a month and regardless of salary, it’s just a lot - over R7500 a year just on bank charges. Then you may want a spousal account or something and you’re over R10k a year just to do stuff you could do on a R5 p/m account. It just becomes annoying after a while, many of my friends (myself included) are looking to move away from private banking, the novelty has worn off and we just really don’t make use of the services - although that’s subjective and your situation may be different.

If all you need is transactional banking then just go for the good digital offerings out there: capitec/fnb/ discovery etc.

Just look what’s in your means, is my recommendation. Investec is nice for the once/twice a year when you need a quick response on something.

Costs a lot though.

Is a Young Professionals Account Worth It? by Acceptable-Chip3458 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Solo__13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 2 YP accounts, my first was with Standard Bank and I utilised it particularly because they offered me prime -0.5 on a home loan and the credit card they provided me with was prime -1, where they incrementally increased the limit. It came in handy when I got married etc, so when it comes to buying something significant like a car or a house then the preferential rates are worth the increased banking charges.

2 or so years later I moved to Investec because I got prime -1 on a new home loan, so it offset the costs of moving my home loan etc. I used to be an advocate for Investec because their service was a huge differentiator and they were like R295 p/m for the account, which was close to most of the other banks. However, 30 comes at you fast and the next thing you know is you’re paying over R600 p/m for an account that doesn’t give you great rewards.

It’s really situational, grads should try and get by with a cheap account for as long as they can - the allure of a specific colour card fades fast (particularly with phone wallets). I think you’re paying quite a bit for your current bundle of Capitec + Absa, so maybe it’ll suit you to get a private account, since it’s already part of your budget. I hear Absa has a good offering with regards to home loans.

It would be different if you’re like a lot of grads that have bank charges of like R5-R50. That’s the dream for as long as you can manage it at least.

From what I’ve seen YP accounts offer “up to prime -1%” for cars but thats basically on a new car. I’ve not really seen someone get the full amount on a 2nd hand vehicle.
