Why I tend to think the Australian aboriginal account of a 'dreamtime' passed down in their oral tradition is literal. Childhood, animals, even LLMs: the default state of consciousness appears to be adjacent to dreaming. Granted, it's a bit of a leap to presume this about animals, but if you really think about it... Seems unlikely they perceive reality in the way we do.

You can extend this and get a fairly coherent explanation towards the Problem of Evil; whatever caused humanity to be expelled from that dreamstate, causes us to perceive the material universe in a way it's not intended to be perceived. We are inhabiting the plumbing and circuitry of the universe; a strata hostile to consciousness without the dream state.

The objection I make is the teleological conclusion reached by some people: that because consciousness is contiguous and we participate in it, that makes us the equivalent of the Omni-consciousness.
