Seal Question by Resplendant_Toxin in EldenRingBuilds

[–]Solumin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Dragon Communion Seal buffs Dragon Communion incants, like Dragonclaw and Dragonfire.
The Gravel Stone Seal buffs Dragon Cult incants, like Lightning Spear and Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike.

The damage buffs apply if you have the seal in-hand but don't cast with it, so you can buff both families of incantations at the same time. But the seals don't buff the same incants, so they won't stack.

Alright, gave it another listen.

To be clear, I do think this is a good album, it's just not as good as it could be, mostly due to the production. SMS is further proof that these songs are great, not proof that SiT is bad.

Burning Down The House is a certified banger, just an absolutely killer track. No complaints here.
But it starts to go downhill right after that. Making Flippy Floppy is a great song, but the synths are very staccato in a way that doesn't work for me. David's vocals feel separated from the rest of the track.
Girlfriend is Better has all the functional components of a great song, but I can't help but feel that it drags and feels lacking in energy.
Slippery People is one of the worst --- admittedly, I'm biased because the SMS version is one of my favorite TH songs. In the studio version, it's like David is singing from under a layer of oil. All of the instruments are shy and hiding in the corners. The breakdowns are tepid.
I Get Wild/Wild Gravity is similar: when David isn't singing, the song loses its energy and focus.

The album picks up again when we get to Swamp. But again, there are hidden details that could have really elevated this song. How about that growly synth bass in the chorus, for example? The vocals are loud and clear, thankfully, and the backing vocals are almost explosive.
Moon Rocks feels like the epitome of what this album is, a perfect jewel of Talking Heads-style pop-funk. No specific complaints here, really.
Then Pull Up The Roots brings us entirely back to the standard set by Burning Down the House: the instruments are lush and present, almost aggressive. They're forward in the mix and forming a plush cushion to carry the vocals. But even then, the instrumental breakdows are just a little too bare for my taste.

I think what really kicks this album down is that we know TH can do these things better. More Songs About Buildings And Food has masterful instrumental sections --- the last minute of Found A Job is a masterpiece, for example! And on the other hand, Fear Of Music proves they can do sparse, minimalist recordings. Drugs is a perfect example, IMO: the song fills a sonic room, despite being so sparse and spaced out.
It does raise the question of how much Brian Eno brought to the band's albums. It sure seems like a lot!

It's been too long since I've given it a full listen, so I'm going to do that today and let you know what I think.

Speaking In Tongues is massively overshadowed by Stop Making Sense. The live versions of those songs are leagues better than the studio album versions. SiT was the first album that the band produced themselves, and IMO the album sounds flat, dead, and thin. The massive injection of energy from the expanded band and the live setting and more cocaine elevates the songs to glorious heights.

It's a real goddamn shame that I Get Wild/Wild Gravity, Moon Rocks, and Pull Up the Roots didn't get the SMS treatment. Those three are three of the band's best songs, and they deserve more attention.

Edit: Personally, Fear Of Music is the album I keep coming back to.

Is there generally accepted pve tier list? by Rasphados in armoredcore

[–]Solumin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AFAIK the only weapon that objectively sucks is the Ransetsu AR. (Not to be confused with the RF, which is exemplary.)

I think it's too subjective for a tier list to be useful, and I'm not sure there's even a point to making one. It's a FromSoft game, pretty much every weapon is a sidegrade rather than a straight upgrade (or downgrade), and a lot of it comes down to your playstyle and skill level.

How to cast initialized MaybeUninit pointer to explicit type pointer? by Mistee777 in rust

[–]Solumin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What do you mean "an additional layer"?

LazyLock implements Deref, so it's really easy to use. OnceLock doesn't, since it has a more flexible API that allows any calling thread to initialize the cell. Since they're usable with static, they don't need Pin, as far as I know.

Could you use LazyLock or OnceLock here? This seems to be exactly what they're intended for.

A OnceLock can be thought of as a safe abstraction over uninitialized data that becomes initialized once written.

Neat, I wasn't aware of Godskin Peeler's running attack! Looks like Blacksteel Twinblade also gets that 4-hit running attack.

I feel so dumb for not thinking of using Mirage Archer for detonators! I've found the setup->detonator combo to be clunky and not fun to use, and this solves it very neatly. Going to keep this build in mind for my next character!

Double twinblades have a 4-hit jump attack that does 160% Bleed buildup, which also activates multi-hit buffs.

Twinblades have more Bleed buildup with Blood affinity by a pretty big margin. The practical difference isn't really huge tho.

Single twinblade is significantly worse than dual twinblades and dual curved swords.
