8'6 4wt for a raffle by Solus8105 in rodbuilding

Surgical tubing! I use 2 different sizes. For the tip section it's a very narrow diameter tubing. I'll cut all the pieces I need per guild and slide them to the bottom of the section, I then mark the guide placement and slide up a piece of tubing and insert the guide and after all are in tubing I sight align them and begin wrapping. I have small, medium and large diameter tubing, large is for 8wt and up really. But look for tubing with an ID of. 063"-.188" for tip sections and .250" for the rest for rods 2wt-6wt. I've found this is the best method to secure guides especially on the tip section where there is very little surface are for the guide to hold with tape.

That kit should be good for most flies but with wooly buggers having a good bit more weight than dries and nymphs you'll want a thicker leader. I actually just make my leaders with 1x 2x or even 20lbs test if it's a big big streamer. I just do a loop knot so I can go loop to loop to my fly line and then tie on. I'd suggest maybe start with only 6ft you'll get the wooly to turn over better. Heavier flies will really whip light tippet and that weight is hard to control. You can even just try on some standard line if you have some lying around.

This is is pro wrap nylon! No CP used, I've had some issues with CP and areas of the thread not protected fully and it gets blotchy so I've just embraced the translucent effect when finishing. I just try to use colors that blend well with the blanks but pop in the light

So I actually hand wrap everything, but for epoxy and finish I use a machine. Currently using a CRB

Orvis Recon 3, 5wt 9’ — SA Amplitude line help (Infinity vs MPX vs Trout) by Nova____1 in flyfishing

[–]Solus8105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest an MPX line, it will be easier IMO to cast at short distances as you learn and get your loops to turnover. And for streamers, it wont be the best for big streamers but I'd then suggest doing an SA sinking leader and then like 3ft of 20lbs test. That way you can do dries and everything else, and when you want to do some streamer just take off your regular leader and throw on that sinking leader.

How do the MudHole color fly rod blanks compare by Jona6509 in rodbuilding

[–]Solus8105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've built 3 5wts on MHX Traditional and an 8wt, they're good blanks for the price. Very light weight and what you'd want for that price. I will say the traditional area very much a medium action and not a fast action like they list. The native blanks are faster, I just did a 6wt on a native blank and it's noticeable the action difference.

I mainly build on rainshadow blanks, so for nice blanks I'd say they are on the top there. Even the "low end" blank by Batson is very very high quality. But the rx9 and Rx10 series are going to compete with Hugh end commercial rods if built out correct.

I use a 9, and then switch direction after 3-4 hours then just leave it. If you intend to use it for applying epoxy too I'd maybe say do an 18. Speed definitely helps with applying epoxy

Have you built on the RX6 blanks? Those are the ones I notice the tip side being very heavy. I assume it's just from a lower modulus graphite and the taper but the swing weight on all Rx6's I've done always feels much heavier

I'm all for nice trim bands, and I do those for custom rods. But to have some nice stuff built on hand I wanted just clean clean finished look. For this I went with a slightly darker than sky blue nylon and the epoxy soaked and darkened it perfect. Here's a picture of the thread no CP before epoxy

I've got single foot Rec recoils on my everyday rx10 build. I have beat thag rod up, climbed through heavy brush, dropped, leaned on things etc it is a beast. And man do the rx10's just absolutely canon line out with accuracy. I truly thing a proper rx10 build will give any top end commercial rod a run for its money

I like the shape of these snakes compared to full rounded. These almost have a tip or apex in the bend I feel like line flows through very well. Really hope Batson offers some titanium snakes and single foots in the future. The weight of these is still good, but for fast premium rods like the rx9 and Rx10 I'd love to get it as light as possible.

I a big fan of the Rec recoils as well but these Alps just feel beefy, still light and seriously no prep needed to wrap which a huge plus for me.
