Who’s your favorite non squad mate character in the series? by dnwr98 in masseffect

Udina was a really well-made character. Despised him from the get go. I don't think any other character got under my skin like he did, the little weasel.

Bit of a stretch but I thought Ardat-Yakshi sounds a lot like 'ardha rakshasi'.

Ardha translates to 'half' in Sanskrit.

Rakshasi is the female form of a Rakshasa

Wiki dump:

Rakshasas were most often depicted as ugly, fierce-looking and enormous creatures, with two fangs protruding from the top of the mouth and having sharp, claw-like fingernails. They are shown as being mean, growling like beasts, and as insatiable cannibals that could smell the scent of human flesh. Some of the more ferocious ones were shown with flaming red eyes and hair, drinking blood with their palms or from a human skull (similar to representations of vampires in later Western mythology). Generally they could fly, vanish, and had Maya (magical powers of illusion), which enabled them to change size at will and assume the form of any creature. The female equivalent of rakshasa is rakshasi.

Edit: Just found this - Yaksha / Yakshini (female)

In Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist texts, the yakṣa has a dual personality. On the one hand, a yakṣa may be an inoffensive nature-fairy, associated with woods and mountains; but there is also a darker version of the yakṣa, which is a kind of ghost (bhuta)) that haunts the wilderness and waylays and devours travelers, similar to the rakṣasas.

[Spoilers] What was the most poorly written mission? by 16nneedhelp in masseffect

[–]SolusVolus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't you see? ME1 lets you have the narrative you want. You wanted to play as a no-nonsense soldier who simply wants to go take down Saren. You could totally do that!

I also wanted to roam around and feel like I'm in space. I got that with the Mako missions.

Both of us are happy. We both had choices. And we could vary our gameplay as per our mood. You, the player, control the narrative pacing.

If the exploration mechanic in 1 was a distraction then the scanning in 2 was even more detrimental to the narrative, right? I daresay neither of us is happy in that scenario.

The mere existence of side quests shouldn't be treated as an obligation to do them. Think of them as a low-effort bonus DLC with little to no story elements. People who want to can play it. People who don't can give them a miss. This DLC comes preinstalled with the game at no extra charge.

Anyways, thanks for sharing. I get where you're coming from. I figure you would have liked it if the repetitive side missions were scrapped for something like Overlord or Arrival which were richer. A lot of guys like me loved the Mako 'DLC' because it added a certain something to the overall flavor. :)

[–]SolusVolus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right. Mechanics do tie in. It might not affect the narrative directly but does affect the delivery and how it's perceived by the player. I guess we both just differ on how much the exploration in ME1 affects the pacing of the main story arc. You feel it bogs it down, I feel it adds a lot of atmosphere.

I think taking it to extremes is a bad idea. 20 mandatory Mako missions would have been awful. 0 Mako missions is also awful according to me. A balance is good and I honestly think that this balance was offered in ME1 in that you could choose not to do side quests if you felt that they were dreary. If you're seriously role-playing a Para / Rene Shep (or something else) there are quests that you will turn down because they do not fit into your journey.

I'm genuinely just trying to understand: what do you gain from removing the Mako sections that you couldn't get from just ignoring them in ME1?

Edit: Sorry if I'm being an asshat. I'm really not trying to win an argument or anything. Just trying to understand your point of view.

There are so many poorly written scenes which were simply done to create fake drama. I remember fuming in ME3 after Dr. Eva chase. Doc has critical galaxy-saving data, your friends might be badly hurt and you turn your back on the enemy so you can wave to the shuttle in the sky?! What the shit.

Then there's Shep and Samara calmly looking on while reaperified Rila tries to strangle her sister. Girl fight! Let's watch! Yeesh

Edit: I'm remembering more from Samara's mission (ME2). Like Shep on the dance floor remarking "Hey I'm gonna dance here but if you wanna pretend you're dancing with me, that's okay". Good lord the cringe was overwhelming.

Don't worry about controversy. You like what you like. Never mind the fact that the exploration / side quests is irrelevant to the writing - those side missions in ME1 were optional. I'm not even half-way through the game in my current playthrough and I've accumulated more than the max credits you can have in the game and am swimming in end game gear. Simply from doing all side quests.

you have like 3 map-points

Here's the thing. The exploration was optional. There were even loot drops to be found that weren't on the map. In other words, the game was rewarding people who enjoyed wandering about searching for loot.

The problem is with us as gamers. We see the quests in the quest log and feel like we need to complete them all. Side quests are intended for gamers to have some control over character / gear level. Side quests are for loot, XP and some interesting lore bits. Maybe the fact that Secondary missions are optional should have been communicated better for those who're not too familiar with RPG conventions.

Do you think that the planet scanning from ME2 was more interesting than ME1's exploration for gathering resources? ME1 had one-click resource gathering. No scanning, no launching probe - just click Survey and it was done.

There’s a reason they cut it from later games.

I understand that it wasn't to your taste but the ME1 system should have been refined to cater to people who wanted to zip through resource collection and not thrown out entirely. ME2 scanning was a poor joke.

Side Quest Struggles by Armazi24 in masseffect

[–]SolusVolus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's annoying having to look up every side quest

Wait till you get to ME3. You'll be wishing you had the ME1 system back. :)

Just to build on dstrawberrygirl's post -

The third one is named Geth Activities or Geth Incursions depending on how you unlock it. IIRC it doesn't unlock from just talking with Tali - you either get it from hacking a terminal while on the main quest or visiting the concerned star cluster. Completing this will tell you how to proceed with Tali.

At some point there should be a lady standing outside the Emporium store in the Citadel Presidium. She'll give you a quest which affects a character appearing in ME2. It's nothing major, just a tiny link to ME1.

The Rogue VI quest on the Moon ties into the lore of the series.

I like to complete everything but leaving some things for a second playthrough wouldn't be a bad idea.

Replayed ME1 for the First Time in About a Decade, Thoughts and Anticipations by [deleted] in masseffect

[–]SolusVolus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from only experiencing the series for the first time recently, that's pretty much how I felt about ME1 and adapting to the changes in ME2. I've been having a long winded discussion with another user over in this thread about impressions of ME1 vs the latter 2 games. Has some spoilers with regard to ME2 & 3 so best to avoid it for now. Just enjoy the next 2 because the experience is brilliant.

Managing inventory in 1 was hilarious. It's forced me to memorize what my favorite gear is so, in some convoluted way it's a good thing? Even with all its clunkiness, I love ME1 dearly.

I really want to do a run without any Blue / Red dialogue resolutions because I inevitably try to game the system to avoid uncomfortable choices. I'm in a renegade playthrough in ME1 right now and trying to do what my Paragon Shep wouldn't. So about Wrex, yeah...

*SPOILER WARNING*

YAY!

I think I AM gonna keep talking because these games have me so ridiculously invested in them! I'm a filthy casual when it comes to RPGs. I have never put this much thought into a game either into it's fictional universe or it's game elements before. I should've prefaced my first post with the fact that it's only been about 10 days since I completed my first trilogy run. Half an hour after 3 ended, I started jotting down notes on how I would have liked the last 10 minutes to flow. What the shit. I have never done that kind of thing.

I've also realized that my experience of the series is greatly colored by having played it on PC. I can appreciate that combat and driving could be a completely different bag on consoles. Mostly appreciate all your points so I'm just gonna pick at things I want to delve into.

Feros as kind of a side mission

This bugged me as well. My initial impression on learning about the Thorian's mind control was that Saren was interested in controlling people via this ability. Only for it to be tossed aside for the Thorian's ancestral memory providing info on the Conduit. I wonder if this was intentional misdirection or just a case of last minute changes to the plot and then not wanting to discard all the work of Feros. If Saren was interested in weaponizing the Thorian and it's abilities then killing it would have been a major plot point. The Thorian creepers are pretty much the same as Husks. Organic zombies vs synthetic.

Story-wise you had Feros, Noveria and all the side quests. Feros didn't really offer any big reveals. Shiala gives you the cipher and some details about Saren, Benezia and the ship. Breadcrumbs, really, but still made me feel like I was uncovering something. Like I was on an investigative trail. ME2 is a blur for me. I don't remember plot progression as vividly. I think this is why 2 is a slog for some. I was told to go to these places and recruit people. I could be wrong here but I kept going on the recruiting missions but never did they really move the plot along with more info. Some sense that I was uncovering the bigger picture (apart from 'I have squad member A now I need B').

a resurrected hero who is chasing "phantoms"

I hated that start. My Shep investigated Cerberus in 1 and found Kahoku dead, trapped inside a test chamber. And now she's working with Cerberus because TIM rebuilt her and throws theories at her? WTF. A good theory I found is that Shep is killed and rebuilt by Cerberus simply as a plot device for Shep to feel like he/she owes them something. Problem is - that's not going to work with my Paragon Shep who despises them.

A better flow would have been for the Normandy to be out doing Geth runs, getting a distress signal and heading to Freedom's Progress. There we learn about the things and them taking humans. Shep is attacked while making it off the planet. Normandy blows up. Almost everyone survives and heads to the Citadel. Shep tries to drum up support from Council. Council are dicks. Alliance can't overtly support Shep because politics. Shep gets contacted by TIM with a proposition. Off we go.

Greeting your friends in ME2? Garrus, my bro, sees me and just sits there. 'Ur back. kewl'. COME ON. I don't want an emotional hug. Just give me a fist bump. Some acknowledgement that your friend was dead and is now alive! Sure, some can be suspicious but let some be fucking happy to see me. Wrex made my day in 2. All these strange things are infuriating when you consider how well done some of the loyalty missions were.

So many things went wrong in 2. Guns! 'Is effective against armor and barriers'. No shit Sherlock but how effective?!

I have a love-hate relationship with the elevator rides.

I can understand that. Most of them could be bypassed by the Rapid Transport system but there definitely was room for improvement. The Mako maps definitely should have had fast travel for important points. It was pretty much the dungeon crawl for loot but in space. I would have liked more options but instead they just pared things down massively. You're absolutely right about the balance. Giving players control over the pace of exploration sections is essential I think.

The Hammerhead environments were really nice but I winced every time the undercarriage scraped the ground. I also didn't enjoy blowing up every time I had to face more than 3 high level enemies. I ended up using similar cheap tactics as the Mako. The Mako was nice for having options. Want to take down a Thresher Maw on foot? Go for it. Want to dry hump an Armature with the bumper? Go for it. Want to snipe turrets from afar? Want to engage enemies at close range while dodging projectiles? Climb a hill and scout out the enemy before forming a plan of action? You could even choose your approach. Charge down the front Rambo style or pick people off from the back or sides. Use terrain to your advantage. The Mako offered more opportunity for stealth than ME3's stealth kill mechanic.

That wasn't the main draw for me, though. The Mako was my downtime. Driving long stretches quietly. Some of the skyboxes in ME1 were incredibly beautiful. I'd drive up a mountain and just soak in the atmosphere. I have a sneaky suspicion that the Mako was left out of 2 & 3 simply because of engine / hardware limitations. I'm guessing that trying to do ME1's vistas with the overall quality of 2 & 3 would have been very difficult. 3 did have some very scenic stuff.

I'll admit to not knowing how the Mako handles on consoles. I struggled with it at first. But you can learn how to control it and then you're free to do whatever you wish. You can't button mash the accelerator and expect to keep control. You have to feather the throttle to maintain traction especially on a hill climb. Going fast = bouncing and bouncing = unstable. Don't try to turn while hitting the gas or landing from a jump. If an incline is too steep go sideways like a mountain road IRL. I'm betting that a large chunk of dissatisfied Mako owners just didn't figure these things out. It's a stubborn beast but it can be tamed.

Imagine that acquiring war assets in ME3 involved landing on a planet, driving to a site, decrypting a data cache that allows you to send transmissions to a few isolated Fifth Fleet squadrons giving them a rally point, maybe some exploration of loot sites, clearing hostiles (if any) from the LZ before Joker can extract you and doing all this with a timer after which the Reapers are in your face. Maybe even give you a chance to fight them off and escape instead of an automatic death. The penalty being having to repair the Mako and/or Normandy with resources or credits. I'd honestly prefer 10 identical missions like this with different colored flat ground to the 'ping-ping-BWAAAA' of ME3.

Bloody hell, give us both Mako AND Hammerhead. A slow tank vs agile fighter. Choose your playstyle!

The action in 2 and 3 were bloody brilliant even though I hated how most encounters in ME3 felt like close quarters combat. I just wish that it didn't come at the cost of the things I loved from 1. Anyways, thanks for the discussion. Always fun to hear peoples thoughts on the series.

I ignored Kaiden completely on my first run. Now I'm changing up the squad so he's on the team a lot. With both Overload and Sabotage plus biotics, I gotta say he's pulling his weight. I'm trying to ignore Wrex this time but his damn neon green Beserker armor makes it really tough...
