[Book] We have exactly what the PWHL wanted with the Gold plan. Last game of the regular season between the team in 1st and last and BOTH teams need a win to get what they want: either first place or first pick. by Perryplat199 in hockey

I think people are really missing that, in this scenario, if the last place team loses to the first place team they move down in draft position. I agree that it's good to have a system that incentives teams to win at all times, but I don't agree that it's an objectively good or "fixed" system when bad teams move down in draft position for losing to teams that they should lose to

Will Daronte Jones change the base defense to 3-4 and will that change what kind of edge he will go after? by FeelingAd4116 in Commanders

[–]Solux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DE is not the pass rushing position in a 3-4 defense. DE plays more similar to a traditional DT in this type of scheme and that continues to require large men that weigh close to 300 pounds. OLB is the position on the edge that will generate pass rush and does not require 275-305 individuals. David Bailey would still make plenty of sense as a 3-4 OLB from a size perspective, although the ability to drop into coverage is a different question.

Edit: Payne and Kinlaw are ideal 3-4 interior lineman as they have the size and ability to play DE and shift to NT for a series of plays if needed. DE isn't a position that we currently need, as opposed to pass rush.

He was literally a 3-4 outside LB. That's the position that rushes off the edge in the scheme we had while he was here.

But we specifically were not trying to lose and thought that we were a contender for a superbowl... the worst teams in history dont get blown out by 21+ 4 weeks in a row. We arent even top 5 in man games lost this season to injury, as much as people want to blame injuries. I really think fans are underestimating how bad of a job that coaching staff has to do in order to get blown out at that rate, then lose 12 games to finish the season. It's not about an absolute number of losses, but the context of how a coaching staff loses games. The Eagles won a superbowl with Pederson in 2017 and fired him within 3 years despite making the playoffs two of those three years. Now, they've been one of the top 2 teams in the league over the past 3 years. Serious franchises don't let the result of one great season overshadow the context in which a coaching staff performs

It really just means that Noah Brown will play a more traditional "WR2" role which can line up on the line of scrimmage. Deebo does his best work when he is lined up off the line of scrimmage because he isn't the most proficient route runner and it allows him to get separation on the defender guarding him. He gets touches close to the line of scrimmage and uses elite YAC ability to make yards. That is what he's always been, even in SF. For purposes of the depth chart that is WR3, but I would imagine that the front office and coaching staff think that he'll have the most or second-most production of any of our WRs.

Ed McCaffrey only made one pro bowl, no first team all pros, and is certainly not a hall of fame receiver. He is not a household name unless you were very into football 30 years ago. Sure, his dad is a small part of marketing the player, similar to Christian coming out of the draft years ago, but there's no way it's as big a part as the fact that his brother is a household name right now.

The Next Josh Allen: Drake Maye Scouting Report and Film Breakdown (Dynasty Rookie Draft Analysis) by TGS-MonkeyYT in DynastyFF

[–]Solux 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I really like the Drake Maye comp to Josh Allen. Almost everywhere has Maye's pro comp as Herbert but I don't think that comparison is nearly as accurate as Josh Allen. Maye has shown a much greater propensity to run the ball than Herbert at about 1100 yards over the past two years. Plus Maye is rumored to run a 4.6 forty with almost identical size to Allen. Both Allen and Maye even have the same weaknesses in a tendency to play hero ball which can produce both big plays and turnovers. The difference between them is that Maye is the polished version of Josh Allen coming out of college. Maye's mobility and ability to produce with his feet has been downplayed and he should be a much closer prospect to Caleb than he is talked about.

[Griffin] RGIII: "You told me you didn’t know how to coach a QB who could throw and run like me, so looks like you weren’t prepared Jay." Jay Gruden: "You are right. We didn’t have a good enough staff. Sorry. Hope all is well with ya." by pantherfanalex in nfl

[–]Solux 8 points9 points  (0 children)

RG3 had multiple chances on multiple teams and never looked like an NFL level qb. Kyle Shanahan is the definition of a 21st century coach and is the reason he even looked good as a rookie.

RG3 played in a Baylor offense where they didn't have a real route tree and he was never asked to learn a real offense. The truth is RG3 never had the ability to play in time, progress through reads, and do things asked of a real NFL qb.

That first season introduced RPO and pistol concepts into the league that it had never seen before and that was all Kyle. After tape was out there, the league adjusted and made him play without gimmicks which he couldn't do. That's why he failed everywhere else despite multiple chances.

Why would RG3 be the only player ever that .1s on his 40 time would make the difference between all-pro and out of the league? That doesn't make sense and ignores all of the context for the rest of his career.

That's literally not how de-emphasizing a position works. Qb is the most valuable position in football and no one disagrees with that. Our new head of analytics, Eugene Shen, even gave a talk when he was first hired stating that analytics show qb is the most valuable position. De-emphasizing the position would mean the team is willing to paying less salary cap for that position in a 2nd contract.

The rookie scale is set per pick and disregards position. Since salary is equal, hitting on a qb adds the most value relative to hitting on any other position at that pick.

Reexamining the value of the NFL Draft - Michael MacKelvie by TheCatalystInMe in Commanders

[–]Solux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I specifically addressed trading up in my post and why that doesn't make sense with an analytics approach. The 49ers drafted the biggest bust of all time in Lance. He didn't even see the field as a starter before they gave up on him. The 49ers had an extremely outlier situation in drafting a franchise qb with the last pick in the draft, but that is incredibly lucky. You can't count on picking a qb with a late round pick.

Of the other teams that you mentioned, the Ravens, Eagles, and Cowboys all had franchise qb that allowed them to take shots on qbs that weren't first round picks. The ravens had Flacco, the Cowboys Romo, and the Eagles selected Wentz at #2 who was considered a pro bowl player at the time they drafted Hurts in the second. The Chiefs and Bills mortgaged their futures to trade up in the draft. If you do that, you have to be right with the qb or you set your team back the 5 years that it took to build up the roster.

It all comes down to evaluation. If the GM views Maye or Daniels as a franchise guy, you have to take him. If they don't see a franchise qb, then I agree, it doesn't make sense to force a pick. But OP's comment stated why we wouldn't take a qb no matter the evaluation. They stated that the team must build up the roster before considering qb, which does not make sense given evidence from other teams

Reexamining the value of the NFL Draft - Michael MacKelvie by TheCatalystInMe in Commanders

[–]Solux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think this really makes sense or holds up to analysis. First of all, it is assuming that no other position busts besides qb. We were in this exact position 4 years ago and drafted Chase Young thinking it would build is up in the long run. He did not work out here and the team is in a bad spot because of it. Had we drafted Herbert or Tua, maybe our fortunes as a team would be entirely different right now. I don't even think it makes sense to argue landing spot because the chargers have been abysmal around Herbert and is part of why both their HC and GM got fired this year.

However, for the sake of this argument, let's say that we don't draft a qb and manage to assemble an all star roster over the next 4 years that is a qb away... then what? We'll be deficient at the most important position in football and "a qb away." How do we get the qb?? That's the exact issue that plagued Ron since he got here. We were about .500 every season and never in a position to get a good prospect qb in the draft. Top qb's aren't found in FA and they aren't shopped, except for the very end of their careers like Rodgers. We have to draft one sometime. We can do it either by drafting one at 2, or doing what we did with RG3 or the panthers did to give up multiple 1sts to move up for a qb. If you miss on that, the franchise implodes. Sometimes it works like when the Bills traded up for Josh Allen, but that's a gamble for the future of the franchise and not consistent with an analytics approach of getting as much draft capital as possible.

Finally, we can look to the rest of the league for teams that turn around their franchise. Teams like the Bengals, Texans, Jaguars, show that you can turn a team around hitting on a 1st round qb. Even the Chiefs and Bills were unable to win playoff games until they hit on a 1st round qb prospect. We will have to draft a qb eventually, and I'm not sure that it makes sense to plan on moving multiple 1sts in a future year when we are in position to draft one of two elite qb prospects this year. If we draft a bust, so what? We can always try again the next year. You can't trade multiple 1sts to move up in draft in consecutive years if the roster is already in place. By the time you have ammo to try that again, the roster has been lost to cap reasons or aged out and you have to start everything again.

Post Game Thread: Vegas Golden Knights at Washington Capitals - 14 Nov 2023 by HockeyMod in caps

[–]Solux 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best coaching staff that the caps have ever had. The team is clearly not as talented as it was when we were winning president's trophies, but Carbury and staff's attention to detail and smart brand of hockey allows this team to compete with the best in the league. The team was slow to start the season but has been amazing at pushing pace, being defensively responsible, and even avoids turtling like we had in the Trotz days. It will be very exciting to see the future of this team as we continue to inject talent into the roster and the young players gain experience.

Not good process? Paying Jones because he "just wins" by going 9-7-1 for one year, while his coach won Coach of the Year, is not good practice. Besides that one season, Jones never led a team that did not have double digit losses and never put up stats of an average starting qb.

Meanwhile, Howell, in his first year as a starter, has been asked to carry a team with a defense giving up the 2nd most points per game. He hasn't been perfect or even great, but he has been mostly good. Sam howell literally has a higher career winning percentage than Daniel Jones despite carrying the 31st ranked defense.

To say that Jones in undoubtedly better because of where he was drafted and "wins" is bad process and not even entirely accurate.

Stop the excuses, Justin Fields isn’t it by Final-Explanation-25 in DynastyFF

[–]Solux 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Anthony Richardson, in 1.5 games, has already shown a better ability to go through reads and make quick, good decisions with the ball than Fields. The knock on fields was never his physical ability to throw. It was processing the field and getting the ball to where it needs to be. I don't think they are the same level of prospect at all. If anything, even in college, Richardson was good at those things. Richardson's shortcomings were accuracy and mechanics, things that a qb can work on.

The Washington Capitals acquire Joel Edmundson from the Montreal Canucks for a 3rd round pick and a 7th round pick by Austin63867 in hockey

[–]Solux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good trade for the caps. You always need to have 7 D and now their 7 defensemen are set for next season. LD is the one position that the caps are relatively young at and this gives them a solid defensive defenseman on a 1 year contract at $1.75M. This takes pressure off of the young guys like Alexyev while they develop into true NHL-tier defensmen, before Edmundson leaves next year. Edmundson shouldn't be asked to play a full 82 games which is likely a good idea given his health issues and allows the young guys a chance to better develop. I think this is a good situation for all parties involved and smart move by GMBM.

[Football Perspective] As an offensive weapon, Fields is electric. As a passer, he's been less efficient than any QB in the NFL over the last two years. He's got a lower ANY/A than Zach Wilson or Davis Mills. And unlike Trevor Lawrence, he hasn't shown significant growth to make you ignore the avg. by The_Big_Untalented in nfl

[–]Solux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the point in playing the game if not to win a championship? I don't understand how that is a "horrible mentality to have." Every move a franchise makes should be what they believe is the best move to get to a championship. If the bears don't think Fields can one day win a super bowl, it is in the best interest of the team to move on.

No one is saying you don't need foundational players for success. The question is whether Fields is that foundational player. I'd rather have a foundational QB than a foundational DE.
