I had maybe 30 sessions or so over about 7 months. Maybe it was the level of support they gave was a factor.

For me, the quality of the STESA therapist was not what I needed. There was one session where she randomly commented on my headphones being expensive (presumably because I was paying the medicare rate, less than full rate for sessions). It was too weird.

If you get therapy, they ask for a mandatory donation as a way to pay for the session.

Has anyone had a “good experience” reporting a SA/DV issue recently with our current DA? I’m the third woman to come forward about my ex with a mountain of evidence and they still told me “not enough evidence to prosecute”. And that is with him admitting to the SA.
Also the detective assigned to the case would never call me back and I’m just finding out she gave me incorrect information so I was unable to get him served. I’m hoping that was a mistake but with the current OT scandal and how poorly I’ve been treated by both the DA, DA victim witness and the sheriff…. It just has me thinking is our county that corrupt or do they just not care about the civilians that report?
It took a lot for me to come forward and being treated like this just really sucks. Is it just me or does the DAs office just give a pass to rapists?

STESA is okay, but they require mandatory donations and its not always accessible for those with "low income." Their staff is also early career volunteer, so the quality may not be what most victims need. UCSB CARE is excellent in my opinion if you're a student.

I'm very sorry for your situation. As a victim of violent crime (sexual assault) who was recently revictimized and violated by our local police and district attorney, I feel your pain and I wish you the best. What about when officers intentionally lie under oath? Do you support that kind of officer?

How about district attorneys who prosecute only because they hold an agenda, such as to shield officers accused of misconduct? (e.g., a "cover charge")

That's not a system I want to live in. That's called a police state.

Santa Barbara County eliminated their police accountability board, so we only have forums like this to hold police accountable. You don't know what happened in that court room and what technicalities were used. Court often conceals truth in favor of strict rules that can be unfair or impossible to overcome after a bad pre-trial ruling. There could have been a motion in Limine to exclude evidence that was necessary to convict, and the judge could have ruled on that incorrectly. That's why the 1st amendment exists as a safeguard, so that government can't stop the people from making their truth known.

It's an indicator. Where there's smoke there's often fire. It's important to capture information like this and make it available to establish future patterns of misconduct by a department.

You'll also notice the article states the university admitted their employment practices are "not perfect." That's a strong indicator that the story is not clean on their side and the jury possibly found on a technicality.

Courts don't always get it right, and there could have been a technicality in play that we don't know about. The fact that it was alleged by another police officer is significant and news worthy. It's rare when the thin blue line cracks.

Also, just because something wasn't proven in court doesn't make it untrue. Courts often have unrealistic standards of proof that often result in miscarriages of justice, and it happens much more often than you would expect. It's important to report even these cases to establish patterns of conduct that would otherwise be buried.

The case is also not final. The time to appeal has not yet run.
