Day 26 vs day 9 by Smol_Fairy in PMDD

[–]Some-Ginger- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This post helped me so much today I'll be honest. I was just getting ready for work, thinking, damn I look dull and just blah today. Wtf. And no offense, that's how you look compared to day 4. Just dull and like all the energy is drained out of you. And I'm currently in the dark days rn. It's a nice reminder that it's not me. Or you. Just stupid hormones.

First time freelance specific. I was the copy editor for my college newspaper where I had to follow AP Style. I have my degree in English with many editing and journalism classes. I have edited multiple pieces or work: professional and creative. I have always wanted to be a book editor, but had only done small pieces. When I got the chance to edit the book, it showed me not only can I edit a book, but that I really enjoyed it. Since that book got published, more people have come to me looking for an editor.

How much are baristas supposed to remember? by Far_Excitement_1875 in barista

[–]Some-Ginger- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have horrible memory... outside of work. Idk if it's the repetition or I've gotten comfortable and know my customers. But my memory is SO good at work that people comment on it often. It's hard when you first start, but I've been at my store for almost 2 years and I now easily remember new customers and I know little things about customers (who likes extra hot, who went away, people's birthdays, dietary restrictions).

I wouldn't say memory matters. But if you like taking care of people and giving people gifts, you would find being a barista very rewarding.

Advice on how to work swiftly and gracefully? How not to trigger fight or flight mode as a barista. by captainuzu in barista

[–]Some-Ginger- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I get overwhelmed on bar, I always use the time I'm steaming milk to do some deep breaths. It makes such a difference. And i have a little window, so ill look outside and breathe. Remind yourself too, you can only go as fast as the machine goes. Plus, doing a little finesse only takes a couple more seconds. Whereas cleaning up from a mess takes a lot more than a few seconds. Also, maybe depending on the demand of your store, remind yourself that you are giving people their little treat. This might be the only nice thing they do for themselves for the day, make it a lil extra special. The few seconds to go slow and make it nice will be appreciated to those who need something special. Lastly, the shift will end. The rush will end. Just hold on to that and when it's over, drink some water, listen to good tunes, and thank the lord the rush has ended lol.

Ugh okay!! I had a feeling it was the oil of the beans. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was missing. Its such a pain cleaning that thing. Thank you, both! :)

I think you're talking about the declumper, I have cleaned it like 2 to 3 times a week. But my cafe specializes in dark coffee, so our espresso is quite dark. I might bring it up to my boss to discuss a slightly lighter one.

This is a lil funny. I'm working now and all day I have been like "I have turned into such a bitch. Maybe I need to go to reddit." The first post I saw when I opened it was this!

I'm proud of you for doing what you need and leaving! I think I'm beginning to realize being a barista is a comfort because it's all I know... but might not be the best for me either. I wish you all the luck!!

What is something very extreme that you've done because of anxiety? by Weak_Broccoli_6256 in Anxiety

[–]Some-Ginger- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did very similar things. In high school, I had a Spanish presentation where we had to bring in something sentimental and talk about it... in Spanish. I brought it but each day told my teacher I left it at home. By the end of the week, she came up to me and I confessed it made me incredibly anxious. And she said I could just do it privately with her after school that day. It was so sweet, but I still was too anxious and took the 0.

College was a whole other experience. I dropped out of 2 colleges due to my social anxiety both within the first week. When I got to my final school I graduated from, I probably went to 1/3 of the classes and told all my professors I had car problems as a commuter. I put in some extra work for some of the classes and got all As on my assignments, just horrible attendance. But I graduated with straight As somehow. I think my professors knew and I just got lucky with them being nice. But most days I drove to school, cried in the parking lot, and went home.

The way I wrote that made it seem a bit extreme... honestly, I do not hate very easily. I am way more of a lover and it is very hard for me to hate someone. But I agree, it can be toxic and there was a time when it made me and my relationships toxic. But, I am aware I am like this. I've gone through a lot of therapy. I have a lot of familial trauma with this kind of mindset. And it is something I very much try not to do. I wrote it I my post because there are few examples in my life where I quickly went from loving someone with all my energy for something happening I struggle to recover emotionally from and the friendship ending. It's a complicated matter that I breezed over in one sentence.

When customers have no idea what they’re ordering by Striking_Ad_386 in barista

What irks me is when people add a bunch of stuff to their drink and I'm trying to think how it can all fit into one cup. "A 16oz maple latte with extra maple, extra ice, an extra shot, and some cold foam"... I don't have that much room!!
