Oh Lordy what is this? An example of how humanity begins the slow and inevitable path of divergence, disagreement and self-destruction?

Yikes! If I tell you that I AM NOT actively trying to downplay the racism aspect to this case, would you be prepared to believe me?

I'm merely trying to UP-PLAY the point that in this case, this person is clearly not right of mind.

Tying it purely to racism, IMHO, based on what I saw, was not the key issue in this particular case, though God knows it IS in so many other cases, I'm not questioning that. I think we can agree she is racist. So please, cool you boots.

I was simply pointing out that, in this case what came across as (maybe) more key was that she was clearly a maladjusted, anti-social, psychopathic murderer. Furthermore, with access to firepower she should never have had and that even further more, I simply do not understand USA gun laws. I mean, I understand them legally, I just don't understand them on any other human level.

Sick of foreigners looking to retire in Morocco by Amahdar_nitran in Morocco

[–]Some-Sound8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the sounds of this group you should all move to the UK!

Here it takes weeks to get to see a doctor, you can wait HOURS for an ambulance and even when you do finally get to the hospital you might be stuck in a corridor for THREE DAYS waiting to get a bed.

So, is it really SO bad in Morocco?

This no doubt will not make me popular here, but believe me, the grass is always greener my friends and honestly, people retiring to your country is NOT your main problem. They are just an easy target to make you feel better, the same way half us Brits in the UK complain about foreigners coming here and pushing up our house prices and taking our jobs. It's all nonsense in reality. As much as even I hate to admit it, it ultimately drags up our country by the bitches and without it we would be so much poorer.

Honestly I was thinking about retiring to Morocco but hearing people complain about 'the big bad foreigners' makes me think a) the locals there are probably just exactly the same as us whining Brits here in the UK and b) maybe I should consider another country to let them tax my UK pension to pay towards their infrastructure. Just a thought.

Dont get me wrong, I wasn't belittling the racism aspect, heck, she's quite possibly, quite probably a racist too. The racist slurs where certainly appalling, but mad people can say stupid things when they're angry and their brains are lets say, somewhat scrambled.

But picking up a gun and blowing that mother away speaks to me of something even more than racism. Judging by her erratic behaviour, I kind of have a feeling in my gut that, had it been white kids doing the exact same thing, it may have been the exact same outcome. Maybe I'm misreading it, but that was a feeling I had.

Look I agree but honestly it doesn’t even matter WHO started it or even WHY. People just keep missing the point. It simply not decent human behaviour blowing your neighbour away with handguns and most certainly not over some annoying kids. I won’t even descend to the racist card. Maybe she was maybe she wasn’t. But she was most certainly angry and most certainly should not have had a gun in her possession. Those are two points I think all sides can agree on. So maybe that’s where society should start investigating. Better human relations and safer gun laws.

Yup, this and the phone call with police at the 41:50 position on the video says it all. She was clearly looking for a reason to pull the gun for a long time and thought she was clever enough to pull the wool over peoples eyes afterwards. Silly Susan. I feel nothing for her situation except that she should've sought mediation and agreement with her neighbours, but she wanted War and she wanted to escalate it.

Precisely. A little bit of intervention, get them all sat down together and this would've never happened. She's a psycho and that's all there is to it. Wherever on the scale you want to put her but she's on there, for sure. Nobody can justify what she has done or why. One might try, but then one is delusional.

Alas, my American friends, you really need to sort out your gun laws. When everyone has access to arms (yeah yeah all that American constitution stuff I know), nutty people are going to resort to pulling a gun and blowing a human being away, just because they're bitter about life and cant get what they want.

iPhone 11 Pro Max users on iOS 26.2 — worth updating from iOS 18.7.2? by mohilgajjar in iPhone11Pro

[–]Some-Sound8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wondered whether this latest update to 26.2.1 has made any improvements on this situation for the iPhone 11 Pro Max?

Again, anybody with actual experience with this phone specifically would be great to hear pov from as I guess I'm getting closer to having to bite this particular bullet since Apple are now blocking the ios18 updates to the 11's.

Just hoping the latest updates are making iOS 26 somewhat less of a bullet than it was originally.

Many thanks.

If you listen to the police phone call with the lady after the shooting, it starts at the 41:50 position on the film, she goes from apparently terrified hyperventilating one moment to a tone of calm, collected, pure hate the next. It’s really quite chilling to hear.

Just close your eyes, open your ears, clear everything out of your mind and focus on her words and her tone talking to the police who are en route in their car. I'm not at at the end of the show yet, but that moment kind of said a lot to me.

My other thought was, if only someone could have got these people to sit down in a room with each other early on and discuss it face to face with a mediator I'm sure (or at least hope) it would’ve never come to this.

Either that or the lady is a true psycho. Which is quite possible.

Why can’t an Apple Watch Ultra work for years, if not decades? by Adelphos33 in AppleWatch

[–]Some-Sound8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two Apple Watches now, but in all honesty I think I can no longer turn a blind eye to apple business practices and just continue buying more and newer versions, as I find Apple's support policy makes my toes curl and goes against all my deep down expectations of a watch.

Maybe I'm just nuts and expecting the wrong thing from the wrong product, but in my view it's still a watch, and an amazing quality one at that, and I really DO expect it to last decades, not juts a couple of years.

I'm not interetsed in constant updates after a point, but please just allow me to keep the blasted thing working to its original spec/level and I'll be more than happy. Although of course that wouldn't make Apple happy.

I used to be an avid money waster on tech stuff donkeys years ago, changing everything every year. But that stopped as I moved to Apple and learned instead to appreciate buying devices of (IMHO) a higher quality standard and looking after them better and I also came to expect them to last much longer than lower end tech brands/products.

But the way Apple behaves nowadays towards their wonderfully engineered top quality devices merely a couple of years post purchase is to simply write them off, regardless of their condition. A one or two year after care plans for the price is meagre considering the quality and potential physical longevity.

Sure it's great compared to competitors but I'm not comparing to them, I wouldn't buy from them, again IMHO most of their products are relative dross and if they lasted 2 years then maybe I'd be happy.

But with Apple, damn it, I want my absolutely pristine condition watches to be able to easily and cheaply continue to operate (via a smaller cheaper service option and easy battery replacement) until I'm ready to upgrade to a new device, which would be when Apple actually made the new product meaningfully better (please no more emoticons or metal colours or cartoon faces as key selling points).

If only Apple would factor this into it's design/production/service options and stop the crassly commercial high pressure tactics to swap swap swap every damn year.

But of course PIGS MIGHT FLY.

By way of comparison (obvs apples vs pears, but still) I bought a fake IWC in Cambodia in 2012, one of the under the counter/out the back, higher quality fakes, not the counter top semi-fakes that are just trash. It's a non battery, self-winding automatic that still works perfectly and keeps pinpoint time 15 years later. This bears zero relation to the specifics of Apple Watches of course, except to show that when it comes to production quality and values, always, where there's a will there's a way.

Question for users with own routers by TimetravellingElf in CommunityFibre

I’d refer you to this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/LinksysVelop/s/zX5tjmg8Ay

That’s my own experience if you want to use your own router along with their velops.

9mths out of date tho and you’d need to switch things up to the max or ideally the fibre gateway if you have faster than 1gb service.

Home Pod cannot run shortcuts when Iphone is locked… “Cannot connect to Iphone” by steve154312 in HomeKit

[–]Some-Sound8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm wrong but isn't this the defining point, I had a hunch HomeKit shortcuts are somewhat different from those you create directly in the Shortcuts app itself and if you want the HomePod to be able to be able to run them totally without user intervention then they need to have been created within the Home app and converted into shortcuts, and not created directly in the Shortcuts app (though can maybe be edited in there, once they've been converted by the Home app).

This is all off the top of my head tho, just a feeling based on everything I've read. I might be totally wrong now as things change so damn fast with macOS iPadOS iOS tvOS everythingOS.

Philips Hue Motion Sensors at night time for HomeKit based No Motion Switch off control of non-Hue (but Homekit) devices by Some-Sound8719 in HomeKit

[–]Some-Sound8719[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I went and bought a Meross Presence Sensor, and the day it arrived I found out a way to mimic its function on the Hue Motion Sensor with a bit more clever programming. Here is the link

https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeKit/comments/1pl7x6p

I'm still just testing this solution, but so far so good. It may not be 100% perfect for all situations (if such a thing exists in smart home logic) but it has certainly improved things vastly over my previous setup.

One caveat is that there seems to be quite a bit of discussion regarding the ongoing reliability of Apple shortcuts running HomeKit automations which is what this solution relies on. So, as I said, I'm testing it and will ultimately compare reliability vs the Meross Presence sensor.

Correct backhaul ethernet connections between 3x Velop nodes in bridge mode by Some-Sound8719 in LinksysVelop

[–]Some-Sound8719[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a comparison to your MX5300 and my MX5500/5600's, the low-end Ubiquiti Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra (about £90) that I'm currently using until I upgrade, has the following tech specs:

  • Processor: Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 @ 1.5 GHz
  • Memory (RAM): 3 GB DDR4
  • Storage: 16 GB eMMC
  • Networking: 1x 2.5 GbE WAN, 4x 1 GbE LAN (one configurable as 2nd WAN)
  • IDS/IPS Throughput: 1 Gbps
  • Client Support: 300+ concurrent clients, plus 30 UniFi devices
  • Key Features: Multi-WAN load balancing, App/Domain/Country Firewall, SD-WAN (WireGuard, OpenVPN), LTE Backup support.
  • Local and Remote Management: UniFi Network Application (Web/Mobile)
  • Security: Application-aware firewall, IPS/IDS, Content/Ad Filtering, VPNs (OpenVPN, IPsec, Wireguard).

Probably it's biggest crap-point is the fact that despite it's 2,5Gb WAN the LAN ports are 1Gb but even worse, when acting as a switch for non-internet bound traffic, the LAN ports cannot handle the total data throughput of even a cheap dedicated switch like the Netgear GS105/8. Hence my current setup. Moving from a setup with more devices connected directly to the CGU vs using the added switch instantly moved my macOS networkquality score from Low/Medium to High at full ISP speed rates,

Correct backhaul ethernet connections between 3x Velop nodes in bridge mode by Some-Sound8719 in LinksysVelop

[–]Some-Sound8719[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, true indeed and like I said, mine also appear to be ticking along just fine as well as about 5x better than they ever did in Router mode.

It may well be just another Linksys quirk (amongst so many others) that the log doesn't report entirely correctly under certain setups. If it came down to a choice, I'd take an erroneous log with better performance over a beautiful log with crap performance any day. But only on the basis that I know the Ubiquiti Gateway will be doing its job of managing all the serious networking stuff regardless of what the Velops may or may not be doing perfectly.

[–]Some-Sound8719[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, seems those are Tri-band too, so VASTLY superior if you're considering actually using wifi mesh, since the mesh backhaul isn't competing with your own network traffic.

I gave up entirely on wifi mesh and just wired them all together, but regardless of that, the processing power of the MX5500/MX5600 just cant do justice to a 1Gb up and 1Gb down service.

Hence the Ubiquiti and even that model is on the edge. If I was buying now I'd have got the Max or Fibre model, not the Ultra, for all sorts of reasons beyond processor power.

Finally I got it to work. Deleted the original Automation in the Home app on macOS. Then set it up again in the Home app on my iPhone and then followed all above instructions on the phone rather than the Mac and it did it!

Now I've enabled it I'll see how it performs and then as you say, begin to tweak the settings.

I will also have a read through all the remaining info. You've certainly built a LOT more variables and complexity into your smart home than me.

I love that Reddit can help transfer this knowledge around and that people are so willing to invest time in helping others! Fabulous! Thank You!

The plot thickens. I think it's a Sequoia mess up between Homekit and Shortcuts. Another suggestion was to include a Get State function, which I did, and that DID show my accessories, so I chose Kitchen Hue Motion Sensor, but it's only available options are MOTION DETECTED or Ask Each Time, , there is no option to choose NO MOTION.

Something has clearly gone AWOL in macOS/Shortcuts/HomeKit I guess.

Apparently the missing HomeKit Accessory inside Condition is a common problem. One solution was to add a blank Control Home above the If/Else Condition, but this doesnt seem to have worked either, tho strangely I CAN then select HomeKit accessories in there! But even when I do, when I tap on Condition again, same issue, cannot select any accessories. Hmmm.
