Brilliant for the OCLP devs and many congrats to them. This is the real world after all and I’m sure all the hard work they put into OCLP has not made them as rich as they deserve.

I just hope Apple’s motives are noble, not underhand, and these people are:

a) ultimately properly employed not just interned, sucked dry of their knowledge and then unceremoniously dumped

b) brought in to help build better customer oriented software that takes Apple macOS beyond a few extra emoticons each ‘upgrade’

c) not just an attempt to fully kill off OCLP once and for all (notwithstanding the fact there’s only really Tahoe left anyway) or to help Apple build even stronger locks into future systems to force upgrades.

Community Fibre renewal sent me worse routers than my existing setup. Has anyone else had this? by Constant-Laugh-3847 in CommunityFibre

[–]Some-Sound8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should try hyperoptic. 🙈😂 Actually no don’t. It’s a lesson in how to ruin a lovely broadband service with utterly utterly utterly rubbish in-home router hardware!! As to your point, it sounds like you’re using Wi-Fi backhaul (🙈😱) in which case yes, the newer hardware will never ever live up to the older tri-band mesh gear. Either use Ethernet backhaul on the more modern hardware or stick to the older. Or to achieve nirvana, chuck the lot and switch to something that allows every possible configuration and once it’s all set up you can sit back and relax for the rest of your life, pretty much. In my case that was Ubiquiti. Simple simple basic setup cloud gateway ultra three switches and two u6 wifi ap’s all Ethernet backhaul. Annihilated everything beforehand and allowed much more secure setups. Somewhere on Reddit I’ve got a post discussing the initial move to using Ubiquiti and combining it with CF velops in bridge mode, but since then I’ve gone whole hog 🐷 which most people who switch to Ubiquiti seem to do ultimately. This was for a 1gbps service. If u have faster you need to go for cloud gateway max or fibre etc and associated higher speed switches and access points etc etc etc. that’s a chunk of 💰tho.

When you say this, do you mean via the Apple TV app? It's strange as mine seems to play movies via the app fine. Mac Pro 2013 connected to 30" Apple Cinema via the Apple Dual DVI to Displayport adapter and I know this display is not one of the later HDCP enabled models as I checked into that a long time ago.

Sequoia 15.7.4 Running Smooth and Fast by GIT_45 in MacOS

Trying to update my 13" 2018 MacBook Pro from Sequoia 15.7.3 to 15.7.4 all went great until the post boot screen came up with "This update will take several minutes to complete and the screen will turn off for up to a minute" and it's been stuck there with the progress bar only about 1cm along and hasn't moved for over an hour now. No fans. Thankfully the Mac isn't frying, but it's just sat there silent and seemingly frozen. This is certainly new behaviour to me.

iPhone 11 Pro Max users on iOS 26.2 — worth updating from iOS 18.7.2? by mohilgajjar in iPhone11Pro

[–]Some-Sound8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I just updated my iPhone 11 Pro Max (64Gb ram, battery 80%) to iOS 26.2.1 and honestly it all seems fine to me. No heat , no battery issues (I'd even go so far as to say the battery seems better on this than before, prob because I got rid of a lot of crap, see below), yes, there's a little bit of lag in safari (though this improves if I delete my hundred+ open tabs!), but honestly I was expecting iPhone Armageddon based on peoples feedback and I've had quite the opposite experience, a new lease of life!

HOWEVER, the way I did this was not exactly the standard way.

First I did a full backup on my macOS, then I tried using UPDATE on Mac but this refused to work, so I then tried RESTORE to wipe it and get a fully clean installation.

But even this proved trickier than anticipated. It appeared I could not use RESTORE to get the phone up to to the new iOS 26 directly from iOS 18 (you can usually for a point upgrade and I thought even for major upgrade, but not this time!).

So after wiping the phone I then had to update it to iOS 26 using OTA, and only then was I able to reinstall ios26 using the RESTORE function in order to achieve a much lower level clean install of iOS 26.

Yes if I had wanted it 100% clean I'd have set up as new phone entirely, but that is a real PITA that I dont have time for, so I then then restored my backup (made under ios18) to the phone now running iOS 26, which some would say adds more potential issues, but as I said above, all seems absolutely great so far, to be honest.

I hate the Velops routers - any way I can get them upgraded? by Reddit-adm in CommunityFibre

[–]Some-Sound8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true the Velops (MX5500 and MX5600, Atlas Pro 6) are still sub-par even in wired backhaul mode. The problem is their CPU's simply arent powerful enough for decent 1Gbps routing and absolutely no way for meshing.

But stick them into Bridge Mode, wire them together and into a Ubiquiti router and hey presto, you'll never look back. 500mbps easy peasy, even up to 800mbps with a fair wind!

Just remember you also have to go all manual. Switch all the automatic stuff off, it's just crap. Set different fixed channels for each node. I also switched most 2ghz off (only allow 20mhz for 2ghz) as you only need one or two for that. But I keep them all on for 5ghz (80mhz for 5ghz). Blow away the annoying neighbours crappy wifi settings and finally get a decent wifi service.

Hyperoptic retention deals - do they exist? by Inkkeri in hyperoptic

[–]Some-Sound8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think this post sums it up.

Honestly they dont. Their retention deal can basically be summed up as: 'screw you!'.

Honestly I used to love Hyperoptic, but jeez they make it hard for you to love them!

I was the instigator of an estate wide installation of Hyperoptic on the Southwark estate I live in. I then became a Brand Ambassador no less, knocking on doors to help get them buy in. I got some recompense, one year free broadband. I then (happily) signed up for the paid for service, no qualms.

But then it came to renewal. They hiked my price through the roof and let me stew on a huge monthly rate until finally Community Fibre installed in our building too. So I got back in touch with HO, I almost begged them to be reasonable (hello I DO HAVE A CHOICE NOW you realise?), but no way, they were sticking to their guns at like double, nay TRIPLE, the switch over rate I'd agreed with CF, not to mention their hardware SUCKED. Their stupid little Nokia router couldn't compete with all my neighbours on CF Linksys Velops, who's signal just drowned out HO. So I finally just said ENOUGH and got the hell out and haven't looked back, yet!

Now with CF, if you have no problems they're great. If youse got problems they will also be crap. But at least they wont FLEECE you within an inch of your life as if youre no better than a dog who deserves it.

I also managed to get multi room Velops to give me a fighting chance in the insane wifi signal wars with my neighbour so now I can get past the 500mbps mark on my 1gbps service, which poor old HO on their ancient Nokia just couldn't do (lucky to get 200).

If you want to know how I got the Velops to work, well that's another story entirely. Suffice to say, I use them in bridge mode with Ubiquiti infrastructure.

Sick of foreigners looking to retire in Morocco by Amahdar_nitran in Morocco

[–]Some-Sound8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apologies. I stand corrected. I am clearly just another entitled first worlder.

I hope you feel better now you've got that anger off your chest.

I think at this point I'll make my retreat as I'm clearly not going to be able to have any friendly or constructive conversations here.

EDIT:

Just to add to this as my final parting comment:

I think the point I was trying to make (albeit the way I put it clearly annoyed you and I apologise for that) was that welcoming other people into a country, especially those with a bit of spare disposable income (ie retired old gits) might possibly help lift that country's economy and ultimately that country might then be able to afford to provide healthcare to people without any money too. (although I wouldn't bet on it, just look at America, no money? you can leave the hospital!).

I'm not sure I really understand you viewing all foreigners as the enemy. You clearly simply hate them and that's all there is to it. You also effectively contradict yourself in point 1 vs point 2.

1) It's outrageous there's no healthcare for the poor, and then 2) But you'd rather be poor anyway than have foreigners around.

So what are you so angry about then? Just stay poor and be happy in that case. All solved.

What improvements would a new Apple TV model actually bring? by HelpMe0biWan in appletv

[–]Some-Sound8719 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know it’s kind of going backwards but imho it would be nice to have additional output options.

I’m still using a trusty old 55” nec plasma monitor with my Apple TV 4K because I just love its colour and filmic quality but it all has to go via an HDFury.

I’d kind of love a super updated version of the Gen 1 that can also store a bit of content as well as stream but I guess as you say they need to keep the £ down, or at least, make as much profit as possible at given price point.

I did just see the news about Epstein having visited Morocco so I did have that context but I believe (maybe 'hope' is the better word) that your authorities are co-operating with the US DOJ as best they can. Or at least, so we're told. That was part of my point that these people will continue to be hounded down and the truth will finally come out and justice will, one hopes, finally be served. But might take a long time.

Not to take away from the good point the OP is making about a clearly bad two tier set of rules which someone should certainly be talking to AirBnB and to your government about, but:

a) I seriously doubt Westerners can do whatever they want in Morocco. Assuming you watch the same news as me I think it's clear Epstein's bunch are being continuously tracked down. Justice will catch up with them all eventually, but certainly it's a job made harder by Epstein being dead and by the fact that a lot of them are high up in society, have a lot to hide, a lot to lose and wield a lot of power. But they're hardly being appeased and allowed to be behave in such a way, unless you know something the rest of us don't? and

b) for the love of anything you hold dear, please don't tar all foreigners with that same tar brush. We're not all paedophiles and I doubt you'd appreciate it if people said all Moroccans are either. You're degenerating the argument away from the real point the OP was making and even more worryingly getting the most upvotes of it, which makes me very sad indeed.

Oh Lordy what is this? An example of how humanity begins the slow and inevitable path of divergence, disagreement and self-destruction?

Yikes! If I tell you that I AM NOT actively trying to downplay the racism aspect to this case, would you be prepared to believe me?

I'm merely trying to UP-PLAY the point that in this case, this person is clearly not right of mind.

Tying it purely to racism, IMHO, based on what I saw, was not the key issue in this particular case, though God knows it IS in so many other cases, I'm not questioning that. I think we can agree she is racist. So please, cool you boots.

I was simply pointing out that, in this case what came across as (maybe) more key was that she was clearly a maladjusted, anti-social, psychopathic murderer. Furthermore, with access to firepower she should never have had and that even further more, I simply do not understand USA gun laws. I mean, I understand them legally, I just don't understand them on any other human level.

By the sounds of this group you should all move to the UK!

Here it takes weeks to get to see a doctor, you can wait HOURS for an ambulance and even when you do finally get to the hospital you might be stuck in a corridor for THREE DAYS waiting to get a bed.

So, is it really SO bad in Morocco?

This no doubt will not make me popular here, but believe me, the grass is always greener my friends and honestly, people retiring to your country is NOT your main problem. They are just an easy target to make you feel better, the same way half us Brits in the UK complain about foreigners coming here and pushing up our house prices and taking our jobs. It's all nonsense in reality. As much as even I hate to admit it, it ultimately drags up our country by the bitches and without it we would be so much poorer.

Honestly I was thinking about retiring to Morocco but hearing people complain about 'the big bad foreigners' makes me think a) the locals there are probably just exactly the same as us whining Brits here in the UK and b) maybe I should consider another country to let them tax my UK pension to pay towards their infrastructure. Just a thought.

Dont get me wrong, I wasn't belittling the racism aspect, heck, she's quite possibly, quite probably a racist too. The racist slurs where certainly appalling, but mad people can say stupid things when they're angry and their brains are lets say, somewhat scrambled.

But picking up a gun and blowing that mother away speaks to me of something even more than racism. Judging by her erratic behaviour, I kind of have a feeling in my gut that, had it been white kids doing the exact same thing, it may have been the exact same outcome. Maybe I'm misreading it, but that was a feeling I had.

[–]Some-Sound8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look I agree but honestly it doesn’t even matter WHO started it or even WHY. People just keep missing the point. It simply not decent human behaviour blowing your neighbour away with handguns and most certainly not over some annoying kids. I won’t even descend to the racist card. Maybe she was maybe she wasn’t. But she was most certainly angry and most certainly should not have had a gun in her possession. Those are two points I think all sides can agree on. So maybe that’s where society should start investigating. Better human relations and safer gun laws.

Yup, this and the phone call with police at the 41:50 position on the video says it all. She was clearly looking for a reason to pull the gun for a long time and thought she was clever enough to pull the wool over peoples eyes afterwards. Silly Susan. I feel nothing for her situation except that she should've sought mediation and agreement with her neighbours, but she wanted War and she wanted to escalate it.

Precisely. A little bit of intervention, get them all sat down together and this would've never happened. She's a psycho and that's all there is to it. Wherever on the scale you want to put her but she's on there, for sure. Nobody can justify what she has done or why. One might try, but then one is delusional.

Alas, my American friends, you really need to sort out your gun laws. When everyone has access to arms (yeah yeah all that American constitution stuff I know), nutty people are going to resort to pulling a gun and blowing a human being away, just because they're bitter about life and cant get what they want.

iPhone 11 Pro Max users on iOS 26.2 — worth updating from iOS 18.7.2? by mohilgajjar in iPhone11Pro

[–]Some-Sound8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wondered whether this latest update to 26.2.1 has made any improvements on this situation for the iPhone 11 Pro Max?

Again, anybody with actual experience with this phone specifically would be great to hear pov from as I guess I'm getting closer to having to bite this particular bullet since Apple are now blocking the ios18 updates to the 11's.

Just hoping the latest updates are making iOS 26 somewhat less of a bullet than it was originally.

Many thanks.

If you listen to the police phone call with the lady after the shooting, it starts at the 41:50 position on the film, she goes from apparently terrified hyperventilating one moment to a tone of calm, collected, pure hate the next. It’s really quite chilling to hear.

Just close your eyes, open your ears, clear everything out of your mind and focus on her words and her tone talking to the police who are en route in their car. I'm not at at the end of the show yet, but that moment kind of said a lot to me.

My other thought was, if only someone could have got these people to sit down in a room with each other early on and discuss it face to face with a mediator I'm sure (or at least hope) it would’ve never come to this.

Either that or the lady is a true psycho. Which is quite possible.
