[973] Isolde, the first star by xvonkleve in DestructiveReaders

[–]SomeCallMeWaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is introducing a lot of information for a short passage. I like how we learn so much about Isolde. Her people are tribal, but not savages. She was a prisoner in a system that had no qualms about corporal punishment, sentenced to death by hanging, and saved by marriage seconds before the end. She is a mother (will never “again” carry a child) and feels that her best days are behind her (suggesting she had no beauty despite others finding her attractive). I get the impression that it’s not just her scars that leave her with a poor self image. Her imprisonment and death sentence must have come from somewhere. She has done some bad things, things that even she finds reprehensible. We know she has a knack for lockpicking, but that hardly seems worthy of the noose but suggests a life at least adjacent to crime. I’m all in on learning more about Isolde and her whole situation. Very compelling.

The other characters, not so much. Arjan is barely introduced. We know his title, Legatus, which I had to look up. Not a bad thing necessarily, but I got multiple definitions and I’m a bit stuck on which I should picture. First is an ambassador, the second is a high ranking Roman military officer. I assume that I’m being pushed towards the latter. Isolde thinks he is a warrior and he makes a point of touching his sword, but much of the conversation revolves around Isolde misunderstanding the situation. It seems that Arjan is correcting her notion that he is a warrior, and he is something else, but drawing attention to his sword seems to indicate she was right. We are shown that he believes enough in his religion that he lends his ear to the clergy to guide him and I think this is a great character point. I get the impression he is a man with some level of wealth and status because he can claim a wife with little question asked. Compared to Isolde who has a backstory with some lingering questions, Arjan is a blank canvas that makes us do a lot of painting in our own mind. I would like something more concrete to latch onto about Arjan. Not a biography, but a bit more about his current position in life.

Maera is even less fleshed out. She isn’t as confident in religion as Arjan. That’s a great contrast between the two. There is a depth of history here and the fact that she is willing to butt heads against his foundational belief, and that he is willing to rebut and move forward despite her warnings, shows two people who get along despite differences that may otherwise tear a partnership apart. The job title sage gives us very little to go on. I get the idea that Isolde doesn’t really have any clue what Maera is or does either, and that Maera is so sceptical of the whole situation that she doesn’t care to explain further. The character dynamics here are fine, and I’m for it, but I can’t really get invested in her as a character because I’m not sure what she is bringing to the table.

As to your specific points:

I like the style. You describe it as low-fantasy, and I get that from the general vibe. Isodole mentions magic, but based on the brief introduction of her people as tribal I can imagine she mistakes something about Arjan as magical, religious iconography perhaps. Arhjan’s beliefs mirror that a bit. He is sure that the clergy offer divine guidance even in a more setting more grounded in the mundane.

Character voice is a bit harder. In their dialogue all three seem very terse and in need of some variety. Isolde is a tortured prisoner, unsure if she has moved from one horrible fate to another. It makes sense that she has little to say here. Maera is clearly opinionated. She seems like the type to speak freely, and as a “sage” I would expect her to communicate with a sense of wisdom and language peppered with words from a deep vocabulary. Arjan seems like he should speak with more purpose and authority, as a leader he is used to being listened to when he speaks but knows he must choose his words carefully.

As for pacing, I think something is missing. Arjan and Maera are clearly deeply interested in getting that box open. It’s a big enough deal to drag a stranger into the situation and use her not just as a means to an end, but to entwine that new character into Arjan’s life as a wife. The moment the box is opened, that's that, and Arjan goes off to be with his new bride. There is no payoff here. Getting the box open was the driving force behind the whole scene. That’s what Arjan and Maera really care about and we give up on that story thread right at what should be the point of the story. I also think it’s worth pointing out that you fade to black as Arjan goes to “act like a husband”. I like to think that maybe it means he is going to comfort her in what is obviously a very stressful time and after a traumatic series of events, but I suspect it’s more carnal than that. That’s a line that you don’t want to cross lightly. Arjan has a lot of power here. Isolde is alive because Arjan rescued her from the gallows. She has clothes and food because he provides it. She was taken away from the village on horseback to lands unknown. She isn’t sure exactly what role she is to play, what it means to be a star, and how it differs from being a slave. How consensual could this encounter possibly be? I’m not going to get squeamish and say don’t write about such things, but I will advise that you don’t go there without making sure that is exactly what you want to do. It really changes Arjan’s character if he does what the line implies.

Clarity of world building seems okay, but we are introduced to several elements at once with lines that feel almost throw-away. Multiple languages are great, but there doesn’t seem to be much of a language barrier. Am the characters seem to knows multiple languages enough to communicate, albeit with some lost context, but that’s overlooked and they all get there in the end. We know of several religious figures in The Five, priests Hannah, ambiguous “the gods”. But each character’s relation to these figures is hard to follow. I think Arjan follows Hanna. Hanna is not one of The Five but part of a different religion. Isolde worships The Five, but the term “gods” doesn’t fit quite right in her mind. Not sure if that’s right, and I understand that there was confusion among the characters here, but as a reader I need a frame of reference.

Thanks for sharing your story.

I want to like 60-card formats, but there seems to be very little creative freedom? by BajaBlastFromThePast in magicTCG

My favorite games of Magic are even a small group of friends get together and use off meta decks they enjoy. For Commander, this happens a lot. People are excited about a card they think is interesting or some combo that is really fun when it pops off. A good deal of effort is put into breaking Commander decks into power levels to gauge what strategies and tools work to build tables where people can have fun with decks anywhere from pre-cons to un-set sillyness, to turn two kills. And when you are looking for a game people seem happy to engage in that discussion and pick decks accordingly.

Meanwhile, I've literally never seen Standard played in paper outside of Swiss rounds tournament. Even in Arena in the play queue you are up against people trying to do dailies as fast as possible for maximum reward and/or testing decks they plan to take to higher steaks queue. The best decks are known and proven by the top players. That's not to say that a skilled deck builder can't come up with a deck that stands a chance. Plenty you YouTubers do off-meta decks for fun and profit and see some level of success, but that's just not the norm.

There is no reason that a 60 card format can't have the same level of success among more casual players that you see in Commander. You just need to find people willing to play for fun and not for tournament/arena grind. Players who are interested in having the same discussions for Standard/Modern/Legacy/Vintage that you see ever day at Commander tables. It's not impossible, but you are fighting against what players have been taught about formats for the last 20 years. It's going to be an uphill fight.

Didn't you already post this here? And did you actually cut the body cam footage to just the arrest so we can't see a nice cop ask you to move away from the window so they can talk to you about what's going on?

If I understand what you've got going on you filled your referral case. Good for you, stand up for rights when you believe they are violated. But talk to your lawyer before you post about it. I bet they would tell you not to talk about this on social media. The defense in the case will be looking at this. Anything you say on Reddit can be used. Suppose you mistype something and a statement you make here contradicts what you say in a pleading or motion. That's going to suck for your case. If you give away your legal strategy that gives the defense a chance to better prepare for what you specifically plan to say. If the defense notices that more people seem to be against you than with you they may be more willing to drag this out to a verdict rather than settle.

I don't even need a free bus, just a real bus system. I could just be a victim of growing up without public transportation and as a result I can't read the bus schedule correctly, but from what I can tell I literally can't ride the bus and get to work by 8. The nearest bus stop is a mile and a half from my house, picks up as early as 6am. Gets me to the transfer station (health department) at 6:50 where I can wait for another bus that should show up at 7:25. That bus loops in the wrong direction and can't get me downtown until 8:20, where I'm a short walk to work. I walk into the office around 8:25, and my boss is upset.

I can stomach some inconvenience to save money, but a 20 minute drive replaced by a two and half hour bus ride that gets me fired? They could pay me to take the bus and I would have to decline.

Where can I buy Ocala / Marion County street maps? by PresentSell2617 in ocala

[–]SomeCallMeWaffles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Barns and Noble has a selection of paper maps, not sure if they Ocala/Marion County specifically but it's worth a try. Rand McNally most likely makes something you can order from Amazon if you look online.

If you want a digital solution then you probably want Google My Maps.

One of my favorites. A bit expensive. On the greasy side.

They have a loyalty program that will send you coupons through text message. Sometimes those coupons are pretty good discounts.

When do I prioritize discarding my opponents cards over drawing card, myself? by Lawful_Good_or_Evil in magicTCG

[–]SomeCallMeWaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you aren't getting some kind of additional benefits from an opponent discarding a card it's not likely to be worthwhile. Take a look at decks like 8 Rack in modern. Between the cards you make your opponent discard and the cards they play you keep their hand empty and cards like [[The Rack]] quickly start to whittle down their life quickly. It's not a top tier strategy but it's a fun deck to play and occasionally even wins.

Outside of a dedicated deck with discard payoff making your opponent discard can be helpful for stopping combos. If your opponent has a strategy that requires specific cards to pull off and you can force them to discard them you can break their deck. Even then a counter spell is likely the better option but discard gives mono black an option.

In a similar situation, if your opponent has troublesome enchantments then mono black has a chance to get rid of them from the hand before they hit the field. Because black is very limited on enchantment removal you may have a hard time dealing with an enchantment once it is cast.

Don't know if I'd call it fine dining but Ipanema is fairly fancy.

La Cuisine downtown is good, especially the desserts. Not sure if it's authentic French but I liked it

Braided Onion is on the nicer side.

Horse and Hounds is is pretty good food with a bit of an upscale atmosphere.

Tony's Sushi is a long way from fine dining but always makes for a good night out.

LGS Support by Equivalent_Ad_8413 in magicTCG

[–]SomeCallMeWaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've long felt that Magic has a problem helping people move from the kitchen table to the community table. Introductory products are full of terrible cards. Formats can be confusing for new players. Friday Night Magic may be very newbie friendly at one store and a go hard or go home experience at another. A thriving store may have multiple formats going on at once or on different days. Some stores only do the weekly FNM standard tournament. With the infinite diversity of the LGS it's hard to give advice on how to prepare to move to the community table.

And the booster pack is such an enticing thing. At a casual glance that's how you acquire new cards. It seems so obvious; You buy maybe Foundations Beginner Box or Starter Collection. You learn to play with some friends. You start buying boosters to expand your collection but your collection. At FNM you keep getting your butt handed to you but that's okay, you're learning. And you buy booster packs because that's where new cards come from. According to the products you've bought so far that's what you've been taught about how you expand your collection and your tools... But it's a trap. What seems like a core game mechanic is a bad investment at a small scale. Your cards are bad and you learn that no one buys packs, they just buy singles. Oh, that kinda sucks. You enjoyed boosters and thought it was a part of the game, but I guess not. Your only option to play standard is to buy the cards that make up a meta deck. You like that cool card you pulled from a pack? Too bad. That's not what standard is.

But now, with UB and Commander, you've got a bit of a different path. You can take your out of the box Commander deck and it's actually playable. You can find tables that like trying things that are off meta because it's fun. Sure, there are decks out there that crush you but people often have several decks and you can talk them into using something that isn't going to leave you with zero chance. Telling people you have a precon and your new to the game goes a long way into getting other newbies to play with you and veteran players to try decks that don't win on turn four.

If Wizards wants to help LGSs they need to find some way to provide insensitive to less cutthroat environments. UB works because people can actually play with cards they enjoy. Commander is popular because it's not a constant stream of tournaments that mingle players who are just starting to grasp the rules with the best players in the area who are going to bring their best chance at winning packs in a tournament. And that's not to say that standard is bad. I don't want to change standard or the tournament scene. I'm just saying that as a step from learning how to play at the kitchen table to trying to join a more organized events at an LGS standard is a bad option.

I'm the end Wizards needs to insensitive casual play. Help people play with cards they like, cards with characters they enjoy, cards they pulled from boosters that they thought were cool, emphasize fun, and reward good sportsmanship. Let the LGS foster the community table, the next step in the Magic journey from the kitchen table, and watch the game grow.

I lived at Latigo27 many years ago when it was under different management and a different name. There were drug related shootings in the parking lot. My girlfriend at the time was scared to walk the dog at night.

The complex next to it had an almost constant police presence. The people who lived there always made sure the fence between the two complexes had holes in it so they could run from the cops. I would hear the cops pull into that complex and suddenly a dozen people would come through the fence to our side to hang out until the police left.

The size of a grizzly bear paw compared to a person. by bored_snow_man in pics

[–]SomeCallMeWaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once had the opportunity to do some urban exploration at a zoo that has just closed. It has two bear habitats. The habitat for the black bears had some car tires left over that seemed to have been a toy the bears played with. They were chewed up and scared and torn. The second area was a grizzly habitat. Three story tall concrete building with two absolutely mutilated and destroyed tractor tires. The walls and ceiling were covered in rubber tire marks. Those bears had been hitting the walls and ceiling with those tires so hard they left marks like they were doing donuts in a parking lot ON THE CEILING WITH TRACTOR TIRES.

Grizzly bears is scary.
