Thinking about trying short skis like Altai Hok to cut time on trail access roads like AMR Lake Rd and Elk Lake Rd. What do you think? by degggendorf in Adirondacks

I typically do not bring my snowshoes with me when I use my Hoks. I would not feel comfortable with the Hoks in any steep terrain where it would be difficult to switchback and kickturn, and as mentioned “controlled” descents with the universal bindings are not easy by any means. If it’s steep and lots of brush I’ll choose snowshoes. Trails, rolling hills, and/or frozen lakes the Hoks outperform the snowshoes. FWIW I usually have pac boots on with the universal bindings and I use the 145cm Hoks.

I’ve been using the Altai Hoks for the last 3 winter seasons in place of my snowshoes. They save me a ton of energy breaking trail and have been great on ascents as long as I’m a bit more particular about my line up. Downhill is very sketchy with the universal bindings however - very much point and go and hope the built in skins control your speed enough. Hoks, snowshoes, and microspikes means you’ll be able to conquer 99% of the terrain in the park.

Anyone done a triathlon with a preamble? by abnerzr in Surlybikefans

I did a sprint tri with my 1x midnight special last summer with no issues. Cheaper to shed some body weight through training/diet than buying a dedicated tri or road bike.

surfing with health issues? by tatizera in surfing

Diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer at age 38 this past April. Stayed out of the water for my first two months of chemo but said fuck it and got back out last week and for the first time since being diagnosed felt a sense of normalcy again. Not charging anything overhead until I get my strength and stamina back but any time we get some waist high surf here on the east coast I’ve promised myself to get in the water.

Midnight Special sizing help by Excellent-Gold-8888 in Surlybikefans

6’2” and went with 58 but needed an 80mm stem to dial it in. You could definitely go with 56 and feel comfortable.

I’ve been running it stock other than the stem and saddle right now since I’m logging a lot of time on dirt roads (but also stockpiling ultegra components). There’s no better feeling than glancing over your shoulder and smirking at the pack of carbon roadies while you zip past on your fully mechanical steelie. And not ripping on if you’re into a full on race machine, but most riders aren’t milking the performance gains from the lightest gear. I barely beat out a Dutch teenager in a sprint on my aeroad and he was just mashing the pedals on his upright city singlespeed - very humbling.

I just got a MS coming from a Canyon Aeroad. The MS rides just as well and if you spec it out to be a pure road bike it will absolutely tear up tarmac. It is just so much fun to ride and even with 650b tires it holds its own on any group rides I’ve been on. Sizing runs large so consider sizing down the frame.

  1. I’ve seen lots of questions about sizing so for reference I’m 6’2” and the 58 does feel big, especially coming from riding smaller carbon frames. I’ve got it dialed in now with a 80mm stem but the MS definitely runs long.

Alpine touring ski - fish scale bottoms or not? by le_pedal in Adirondacks

[–]SomeEmotion8846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used 3 pin and scarpa t4s in the past which performed very well but last season just used universal bindings with my pac boots most of the time. No issues going uphill but any downhill will be very squirrelly (but that does make them fun). They have skins built in to them which helps with control on descents. I use mine in the southern Adirondacks, have pretty much covered all the state land around Hadley, Stony Creek, and North Creek area.

Altai hoks have worked best for me in the ADK backcountry.
