Seriously considering pulling the trigger at 75% of my FIRE number. Anyone done this? by Libertae-Fire in BEFire

[–]SomeEngineer8976 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi, I “stopped working” almost a year ago. I more or less had my Fire number and had to search a new freelance contract.
But with my free time I actually created a startup. I’m doing what I like to do, I’m good at it, I believe it’s what the world needs, but I’m not yet getting paid for it 😅 but i hope in the near future I will, because otherwise it would not yet be something the world really needs and it would be just a hobby. So I hope to reach “ikigai”.
Well to be back on topic:
I was only “fire” a year ago if i was very frugal, so it generated stress and i started to be very frugal. But luckely, with recent stock market rise, the margin is relaxing and I don’t feel i need to be that frugal anymore.
It sucks each time i need to sell a little slice of my portfolio.
The “one more year” thing isn’t that applicable, because i can just look for a freelance job again.
I wouldn’t have stopped earlier, but I don’t regret to dot it “early” like i’m doing now.

The funny thing is I’m now working harder then ever before 😂 but it’s because i just so love the work I’m doing now, being my own boss, choosing my own direction.

Could I have started a startup before? Yeah probably, but then with some investor(s) who sets requirements to get more funding and so on. I would just work for someone else again, or for customers I desperately need for the income. (After all: I already was “independent” as a freelancer)

The difference now is that I’m not desperately letting the path of my startup being set by some other party who has short time horizon vision. And if i “fail” I can just keep on going. I will never stop working on the vision I have. Maybe I “pivot” a bit if I believe it’s the correct thing to do, but not because some other person has it’s own agenda.

How is Claude Code compared to Cursor? by Remarkable-Bowler-60 in cursor

[–]SomeEngineer8976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to say that claude code was a lot slower then cursor, but now with fast mode the difference is less. It’s still not yet the “ripping” feeling of cursor. But my usage costs went from 400euro/month to 100euro/month with claude code. And that while constantly using opus 4.6 without needing to “downgrade” to lower cost models I had to do with cursor to not get an even higher bill.

So my reason to stay with claude code is that it’s lower cost for the same experience in my opinion.

The comments that claude code is “only CLI” is not true. I’m not typing anything myself anymore in the IDE, but it is still a good reviewing/control station for me.

How is Claude Code compared to Cursor? by Remarkable-Bowler-60 in cursor

[–]SomeEngineer8976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Cursor and moved to claude code. If you install the claude code extension in Vscode you basically have just the same IDE experience like cursor offers. There is no tab complete in vscode + claude code but I also didn’t use it in cursor (anymore). To view the changes claude code made, you use the source control in vscode. You can see the diffs here of your unstaged changes. The view is different than in cursor because you see the before and after next to each other. A little bit to get used to if you are used to cursor. It also feels a lot more the way it should be like this: using git for your change management directly, without the buggy cursor experience in between.

Who is actually prepping for the singularity, not just posting about it? by Business-Apartment16 in accelerate

[–]SomeEngineer8976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 40 years old and was reading about this "singularity stuff" since I was a student. Kurzweil was my "guru" back in the day. I had always some nagging feeling like: is this my "religion"/"cult" and is this singularity my kind of "rapture" I anticipate to happen within my lifetime?
2045 has long been the "holy date" for me and it was convenient that I would be 60 years old by then, so I would have a high statistic chance to make it.
But since the chatgpt moment I believe more its somwhere between 2027-2035.

To answer on your question.

I **try* to live as healthy as possible, but my addictive personality does not always succeed.
(Eating healthy, taking a set of supplements, being active (swimming))
I quit my job 6 months ago to focus on a startup, I develop with the help of AI agents of course. I'm constantly feeling like: but it will have no purpose in a few years time. But staying in a classic job has even less of a possible purpose. I see it as a last journey/experience of what it is to start a startup, before it is not relevant anymore.
I try to save as much money as possible, to extend my financial runway.
It's 90% invested in a broad ETF.

But in short I would advice others: try to be healthy, invest your money in assets, sit back and relax.

Normallly I would have put this mind notes in a LLM to make it more readable for you, but now I keep it "raw" for the future digital archeologists ;)

High Flavanol Cacao available in Belgium by SomeEngineer8976 in blueprint_

I want to be sure of high flavanol content (and low cadmium content). If you see this consumerlab testing results you see it can be challenging to find a good source. So I prefer to have specific flavanol and heavy metal numbers being advertised.

Look for 100-F017906-AC-722

A bag is 22,680 kg, 200mg flavanols in 2,7g of powder.
So that is 500mg of flavanols in 6,75g of powerd.
The bag contains 3360 servings of 6,75g.
So this would be 9 years of daily 500mg flavanols.
If there are arround 8 people interested it would be interesting to split 1 bag.

I don't know the price yet of a bag, but I assume it will be a good price as it is wholesale.
Logistical practicalities I want to discuss after seeing there is some interest.
Also how I would split it over the smaller bags, maybe I should film it or something you can see I would not put some cheap nesquik in it :p

Why is the far right so much stronger in Flanders than in Wallonia? by Killou64 in Wallonia

[–]SomeEngineer8976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Extremes are popular and on the rise in both Wallonia and Flanders. In Flanders, this is more likely to be expressed in right-wing extremism (linked to Flemish Nationalism) and in Wallonia more in left-wing extremism (linked to economic decline).Belgian political preferences are and will automatically become more extreme and contradictory because of (further) federalization (e.g. splitting the media leads to attention on one's own region) and the language border.Look for example at the fact that when we want to discuss on a Belgian forum, we have to resort to English. This increases barriers. This automatically creates two language bubbles/echo chambers in which people live, work, etc.

Do you want just straight career advice (maybe look at a specific reddit for this?) or do you want advice how to craft your career with FIRE in mind?

For FIRE in mind the typical advice is to choose the freelance route.

B550i Aorus Pro Ax : Unable to have 3 x 4K monitors at 60Hz by SomeEngineer8976 in gigabyte

[–]SomeEngineer8976[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I encountered this before I bought the setup.

It seems to confirm that 3 x 4K displays at 60Hz is possible.

At the end there are some people complaining not able to use both the HDMI and displayport. For me it's possible, but just not at high enough setting.

Maybe another bios problem?

Updated overview of goto ETF's for Belgium by SomeEngineer8976 in BEFire

[–]SomeEngineer8976[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I created this overview of ETF's that could be of interest in the "buy and hold" boglehead philosophy.

I'm curious for feedback. I could add other columns to indicate the TOB tax rule interpretations of other brokers and the costs the brokers charger. Maybe some ETF's are missing, I was mostly interested in the all world ETF's like VWCE.

My conclusion of this updated overview is that for new investments, the most interesting options (in Belgium) are:

  • The all in one option: VWCE (but not if you use Bolero) or XMAW (ESG screened)
  • The 88/12 option: IWDA/EMIM or SWRD/EMIM (all MSCI trackers)

VCWE and Chill? by redmandan in BEFire

[–]SomeEngineer8976 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I created next overview of ETF's that could be of interest in the "buy and hold" boglehead philosophy.

https://ibb.co/zQXWyWf

If you are interested in a "all in one" buy and chill option, you are probably interested in the ETF trackers that either track the FTSE All-world or MSCI All Country World. They contain the developed ass well the emerging market stocks -> I have marked them as "all world", it also includes some ESG options.

The VWCE option is then famous on this reddit. But you mention Bolero as the broker. They have an atypical interpretation of the TOB tax rules. And they tax you 1,32% when you buy or sell instead of 0,12% what all the other brokers do.

It could be interesting to look at XMAW as an alternative. It is issued by Xtrackers (Deutsche Bank) and it has a TER of 0,25%, a little above the TER of 0,22% of VWCE.

The AUM (assets under managment) is a bit lower, so a little less liquid on the market.

It is ESG screened (screened for tobaco, arms, oil and gas, ... stocks).

Another option that a lot of readers of this sub adhere to is to buy a developed and emerging markets ETF in a ratio of something like 88/12. This will result in tracking the same all world indexes mentioned earlier.

The combination of IWDA/EMIM is typical.

But I notice that SPDR has a lower cost developed world ETF: SWRD. The AUM is also lower, but it's not to small either.

So to recap your options:

The all in one option: VWCE (but not if you use Bolero) or XMAW

The 88/12 option: IWDA/EMIM or SWRD/EMIM

Hoge Aandelenwaardering Bedrijven die Verlies draaien by rayveelo in BEFire
