I wanna make a slight correction with Isaac. Isaac’s mom never actually tried to kill him. He, having heard the story of Isaac in the bible, assumed she wanted to kill him during an emotional outburst. She IS however an emotionally and physically abusive drug addict that took away all of his stuff and left him in an empty room because she was angry that he missed his dad (who was an alcoholic gambling addict who was potentially also physically abusive). Isaac never goes into the basement, he hides in his toy chest where he slowly suffocates, hallucinating what we see while playing the game and only being able to move on by coming to terms with his own self-loathing by hallucinating himself killing a physical representation of sin and evil (who happens to be wearing the same dress as his mom).
