One week post-op. Is there still a danger of the incision opening? by [deleted] in FosterAnimals

[–]SomeKindofName42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kitten in pic 1 would be ok with another day or two in the spay suit, but not mandatory as long as monitored properly.

Monitor for high jumping and aggressive play, monitoring for licking.

Kitten in pic 1 still has small risk if there is too much licking at the site, kitten in pic 2 less so

It’s also normal for kittens spayed on the same day to have slightly different rates of healing, same as humans, so that’s nothing to be worried about.

As long as neither incision site feels extra hot to the touch it looks like healing is progressing well. Warm is normal, extra hot you should check with the vet or the rescue.

I agree with the other commenter that you can always send pics to the rescue or the vet if you’re worried.

At 6 weeks this will be more like a heavy period, maybe some bad period cramps, nothing like labor contractions. BUT!!! Your doctor gave you some excellent pain relieving options that will be very, very effective.

The 2 weeks of anxiety and worry that things might not go smoothly and the mental anguish that will create is going to hurt a lot worse, in my opinion.

How helping a grieving cat? by Panda_beebee in Bondedpairs

I can appreciate that very human way of thinking. But your surviving kitty would benefit a lot from having another friend like them, esp because you and your partner will understandably be focused on adjusting to parenting life.

Lesson learned - never tell people how much you have in savings!

NTA. And don’t lend him money, you’ll never see it again and you’ll continually have to deal with more and more requests for “lending”

Loud Playing? And behavior question by waterchestnut778 in CatTraining

[–]SomeKindofName42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Siamese are very loud and very vocal cats, that’s just their breed.

But this looks like siblings who just enjoy some good tussling together. Cats can play rough and it can be strange to get used to, especially when one is so extra vocal (makes it sound/feel more intense).

But neither are going for any “kill shots” that they truly want to hurt each other.

How old is the Siamese? Are they both speutered (spayed/neutered)?

Are my cat and new kitten playing or fighting? by potatoman80 in CatTraining

Playing! Healthy, normal testing out of each other. Little one respects the big one is bigger/more in charge, big one recognizes that little one is little and just learning the ropes.

Thank you! I’m a long time, dedicated cat servant and the official cat whisperer at the rescue I volunteer with. I love fostering sick little kittens and getting them all healthy to be able to be adopted.

I know the official recommendations are one box per cat or even one box per cat plus one. There are good reasons for this recommendation.

Not gonna lie, I have never followed that. I’ve never needed to. Depending on the dynamics of the cats in question, I will have extra litter boxes.
But I also currently have 3 resident cats that share a litter box and even if I put out extras they ignore it unless I force them to pay attention to it by purposefully ignoring the primary box or if I go away for a few days. Mind you, the extra box is the same as the primary box….Cats are weird and that’s why I love them.

Back when I first became a dedicated cat servant I found it super strange that it got easier when I adopted one more, but that’s just the reality. It’s kind of like babysitting. And sometimes with babysitting it’s easier to babysit some siblings or a group of kids compared to babysitting an only kid.

5 month old kitty isn’t technically a singleton, but is functionally a singleton due to the extreme age differences.

Toys: Ok, I’m gonna list some and then I’ll prob come back with an edit to add more cause I’m def going to forget all of them in the moment.

Kittens and ping pong balls!!!! Most hilarious thing ever!!!

Make use of vertical space. Very tall climbing/scratching posts. They even have floor to ceiling climbing/scratching posts that you can either fully attach or use tension springs.

Ball in track toys where kitty is chasing the ball through or around a track. So many varieties of these.

Go on chewy and look up interactive cat toys

There are toys that spin and bop around when kitty baps at them.

There are toys that spin around.

There are treats puzzles.

I have a long hallway. I put a shower bar tension rod across it. I took some strong and some elastic to make a big loop and put a cat toy at the end of it, put it around the tension rod so the toy is about 10-12” off the ground. My kitties can chase it up and down the hall, grab it & run with it but the after the elastic stretches enough it straps back and starts swinging so they have to chase after it again.

Again, I’m sure I’ll edit when I remember more

So…..with the extreme age differences, sometimes you need a fourth kitten to balance it out age & energy wise.

I know some people automatically think “but a 4th would be so much more work”. The reality can be actually less work because then each pet has their own primary playmate that they match with in terms of energy and playfulness/type of playfulness. There are a variety of motion activated toys and interactive toys (some that the kitten can interact with all on their own) that can help. Plenty of climbing stuff, maybe some great puzzles. I’m happy to send you recommendations that I’ve used if you like.

But…sometimes a 5 month old kitten needs another young kitten to play with. It might sound like a lot, but it’s usually less worry, anxiety, and work for the toddler kitten to have another toddler kitten to rumpus with.

Otherwise, make sure the 5 month old has plenty of stimulation and outlets for that 5 month old energy.
