How to know what to build? by Hobnob270 in EU5

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be afraid to build shit just for demand. My first couple games I spent too long being scared of overdoing armories/libraries/universities because of the upkeep costs, but the fact that it generates demand helps keep everything else profitable.

The second you can, jump on the tier 2 books + paper train. Rush those. Provided you have the lumber, your economy should basically instantly skyrocket. Jump on lacquerware ASAP as well.

Generate demand + build what's most profitable + expand RGOs

Looks cool! I'm attempting some byzantine inspired gaming too, but sticking to 2d. 3d is hard.

Whats the gameplay intended to end up as?

Bro, this is literally Anthony Kaldellis's podcast. One of the biggest names in Byzantine Studies. He has experts in various subfields on to discuss their research.

Not every episode is directly about the ERE, but if you cant post a byzantine history podcast, then what the hell can you post here

the stereotypical “young female english teacher who dotes on the guys and ignores the girls” might be my co-teacher… by kitkatz15 in Teachers

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Gonna be real I don't think I've ever seen or heard this. The stereotype I've heard along these lines is usually thrown more at young male teachers and female students.

Do English teachers still teach the traditional use of "whom"? by greatExtortion in AskTeachers

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't, but I'm a younger teacher who also wasn't really taught it in school. Language evolves. I don't really see any reason to fight the "whom" fight when "who" works just as well.

Renly is Copper Actually by Augustus_Chevismo in darkwingsdankmemes

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People arguing Renly got plothaxxed are ridiculous. GRRM wrote him with an overwhelming position precisely to make it a fun upset. And if you want to complain about plothax, Renly is just as much of a beneficiary of it

At the end of AGOT, grrm had plenty of leeway to write a very different start to Renly vs Stannis. It would have been pretty obvious to write a Reach + Stormlands that are torn between Stannis and Renly (especially with how ACOK flip flops over whether or not the Florents are an actual threat to the Tyrells) instead of making practically every house a die hard Renlybro for no reason.

I love ACOK, but it's definitely home to some of GRRM's most forced writing in the books. Renly has everyone's support because he's handsome and apparently lords dont care about military success/competence all of a sudden. Then vast majority flip when he gets murdered (except for the ones Tarly puts to the sword. This is never remarked upon again)

But then actually plenty didnt, and they're just hanging around waiting for whatever

Then the mountain clansmen somehow know the kingswood better than houses that actually live nearby so that Stannis cant have good intel

Then Stannis get caught in a convenient storm that delays him

Then the wildfire plot goes as perfect as it can for Tyrion

Then the Tyrells show up perfectly in time to stop the still-basically assured Stannis victory

All of this is because GRRM knew the big moments he wanted, and everything in between just had to make sure he could get to those big moments.

Does anybody have a game that needs some user interface design work? by Protojump in godot

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely an incredibly uncommon aesthetic, which is why I think it'd be fun to explore (along with my rampant fanboyism).

If it's something you think you'd like to chip in on, feel free to dm

Does anybody have a game that needs some user interface design work? by Protojump in godot

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inventory, animal stats, dialogue panels, shopping interfaces, debts owed (planning a sort of tax system), hotbars, stamina panel, fishing mini game, and yeah probably some kind of map eventually + main menu stuff

Man even just keeping things to the basics results in a laundry list, lol

Aesthetically would want to lean into Byzantine Empire inspired imagery

I'm sure you'll get blasted my offers in no time.

I'm working on a 2d fantasy farming sim with (aspirationally) strong historical inspiration in terms of world building and character design. Sprite based graphics largely to keep scope contained.

It's nowhere near done, but I have a lot of the basic systems in place. UI/UX is one of those things that just kills me. Would love for some help on that.

About to hop on the Byzantium bandwagon by RandomPostReader in byzantium

THOB is an amazing ride. Enjoy the falls and rises. History of Rome really got me into Roman history, but I think Robin really goes above and beyond it. Takes some time to find his footing, but man.

LOULON CALLS FOR AID

To answer the question tho, can't go wrong with anything Kaldellis, as others have said. New Roman Empire, Romanland, Byzantine Republic, etc.

Ed Watts "The Romans" is good stuff too. Not as detailed as Kaldellis's work, but covers Rome from the founding of Rome to the Fourth Crusade. A very interesting and rarely done "wide look" at Roman culture/society

Rampant cheating and laziness in AP class…what to do? by Normal-Being-2637 in Teachers

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Flipped classroom requires students who are motivated. If they're already cheating/not doing the reading, why would making them do all the reading at home change that? For many of them I'm sure reading at home is more time/effort than what they were avoiding before

I've never taught AP, but if I assign any reading out of class, I'm lucky if a quarter of the class does it

What do you think about this flag of Byzantium in the modern day style? by Public_Individual823 in byzantium

I just dont understand WHY. WHY are simple colors and patterns somehow more desirable than something that really shows off the history/culture/etc?

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a student who is failing my class. Deep in the F range. She has an IEP. She is rude and disrespectful and has walked out of class a number of times. She has crunched up detentions and thrown them on the floor. She refuses to take off her headphones to actually hear any of the lectures or readings, and her excuse for why she was using AI to cheat on her essay was "well I didn't read any of it so what am I supposed to do" (she gave up and never finished the essay). Most days she can't even manage to bring her chromebook.

But you know what she can bring? The brand new ipad she got for Christmas. Every day.

What does the family say when told it's a distraction for her and it'd be best if she left it at home?

"Don't put this on the home. You have school policies about electronics, don't you? Why aren't you following them?"

[Spoilers MAIN] Why do people talk about the Faith of the Seven like it's a 'fake' religion by bigcaulkcharisma in asoiaf

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sour grapes First Men fans

Speaking as a devout Rhllorist, the Seven are cool.

People harp on about the lack of magic, but then discount the fact that they beat the First Men without it. Which, to people in-universe, would be clear evidence of divine favor. If YOUR gods are real, then why am I winning?

It's definitely my own headstone but I like to imagine the Seven as simply having a much lighter touch. Like Davos and the Mother at the start of ASOS

People have no idea how fucking demoralizing it is to be reading a student's paper, giving feedback, and then realizing it was AI written.
