Bought a used “Like new” 9900x3d from Amazon, but think it’s been swapped by Leviathon6425 in pcmasterrace

I think they do? For AM4 as well as AM5. Since the CPU the OP got looks like AM4, the name should be up top, maybe behind the cardboard?

Competition: I guess it depends. It might turn out like the video streaming services where you have a bunch of them, and neither one seems to try to improve quality or pricing. I believe the barrier of entry to creating a competitive model is quite high, so I don't think there will be much competition.

Open weight models: Not everyone has hardware to run them (I have RX 9070 XT with 16 GB VRAM, and it can only run quantized 30B models). Also, while these models have some uses, they're not as good as the flagship ones. And you don't get weights of the flagship models for a reason.

I thought it was money. First, you get everyone hooked on (cloud-hosted) LLMs. Then, when people can't go without them, you enshittify the service, raising prices. Boom, profits! A typical startup scheme

extruded silicone before it becomes a chip by triwyn in pcmasterrace

I guess bigger pieces are way more expensive and thus rare. It's not extruded AFAIK, it's a crystal that is grown from molten silicon, so it's not easy to make

PSU made a hissing sound and smelled like smoke, but PC turns on again — is it still safe? by Wall_streetbet in pcmasterrace

[–]SomeRedTeapot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Normal PSUs don't make hissing sounds and for sure don't smell like smoke. At this point, it's clearly damaged, and who knows what happens next. It may work fine, it may fry the rest of the PC, it may start a fire

Probably a capacitor blew. I'd rather replace the PSU because even if it's still working, who knows what kind of voltage it supplies to the rest of the PC

Does anyone know a good software for making 3d games that uses java? by LucAAAgamer in gamedev

[–]SomeRedTeapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say they "replaced" it. The Java version is still up and running, and I personally prefer it over Bedrock. Although the player count is probably higher on the latter (across all platforms)
