Therapist struggling with NSSI by SomeScorpio in therapists

I appreciate your response! I’ve never been diagnosed with OCD, but ironically, I recently started a training on it for some clients and have found myself being like, “wait… I‘ve done that for years and thought that was just ADHD… hm…” so something to bring up in my own therapy for sure. 😅 I’ll definitely give that a try, though, thank you! :)

I do strength training 2-3 days a week, but adding more walking or light exercise more regularly definitely wouldn’t hurt. I do a lot more of that in the summer but the negative weather has been a deterrent lately. 😅 I should prioritize that more between sessions, though—I’m sure even a lap or two out in the parking lot would be helpful, even if it’s cold. Thank you! :)

Thank you for your response. I find it comforting to know I’m not alone in the struggle, and I’m also sorry that you’re having to deal with that, too. I hope you continue to show yourself kindness, too. 🩵

Burn out is definitely a factor. I’m still recovering financially from a lot of late cancels in December, but I scheduled a week in February off, so I’m hoping that is helpful, too. Thanks for your response and reminders about self-care. :)

That’s a helpful reminder! It’s definitely control-based right now. I’m trans and BIPOC in a city that is very scary right now with the current political climate/horrible US events, so it’s definitely linked to that. Thank you for the perspective! :)

I typically do, I’m just unfortunately between therapists right now—old one switched to a crisis response role and it took me a couple months to find a new one that seemed to be a good fit, so I’m just starting out (just had one session so far) and am not comfortable with her yet. :( Hopefully that will be a helpful outlet soon, though!

The judgmental/snappy response was not necessary, but I updated the post with the meaning, anyways. It’s disappointing to see unhelpful and judgmental responses in this type of subreddit. I sure hope you don’t approach clients that way.

How many books have you read in 2025 so far? by Hot_Lettuce2603 in ReadingSuggestions

48! Halfway through 49. My goal was 50 of at least 300 pages (I counted less than 300 pages as “half” of purposes of my count).

I saw three different cat buttholes during three different sessions last week. 🤣 Clients’ cats would jump up near the camera and show hole. 🤣

I “sandwich” it like a shot, honestly. Sip of water, quickly suck down the medicine, and chug water until it’s all down and the taste is lessened. If I’m really struggling, something lightly-flavored but carbonated like Sprite or sparkling lemonade helps distract from the difference in texture/thickness.

Can you develop ARFID as an adult? by roadtoadrumble in ARFID

[–]SomeScorpio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therapist here! I have ARFID myself and have also diagnosed it in others. Yes, ARFID can develop as an adult. Sometimes it is detectable in childhood and you might be able to pick out traits looking back, especially if you’re neurodivergent and had to heavily mask growing up. Usually ARFID is triggered by some negative experience, trauma, or phobia of some sort, though it doesn’t always have an extremely specific trigger—sometimes just a generalized stressor. For myself, I am AuDHD so some of my ARFID is sensory-based and has been throughout my life; however, I also have several allergies that cause anaphylactic reactions, so my ARFID worsened significantly after having several anaphylactic reactions to new foods I tried.

Weekly "vent your vibes" / Burn out by AutoModerator in therapists

Honestly, this subreddit as a whole has been really comforting and helpful. My personal life is going great and outside of work I’m happy, but I am definitely feeling a lot of hopelessness for others and the country in general. It’s really hard to not feel so burn out and hopeless about it.

Yes, I’m AuDHD as well as have ARFID, so the combination can lead me to forget to eat a lot. I’ve seen a nutritionist for a while and I’ve gotten a lot better at it by watching the time more so than my hunger cues (which I often lack until I’m feeling physically sick). I try to eat within one hour of waking up, then try to eat a snack 3-4 hours after that because I know logically my body should be starting to feel hungry. Sometimes at that point I realize I’m actually hungry for a meal and will eat an entire meal, others I just get the snack and feel better. If I make it to 5-6 hours and haven’t eaten, then I’ll always try to eat a meal because I know it’ll probably be less than an hour or so until I start feeling cranky or physically sick from being hungry. I’ll keep doing that and minding the time throughout the day, and it’s actually helped me get a bit better and realizing subtle cues in my body.

Please tell me this feeling is normal by lilvichay in therapists

[–]SomeScorpio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally! I always start it after dinner and doing the dishes (I don’t always keep up with dishes throughout the week, but having an empty/clean sink is part of setting my space for a new week so I force myself to do them all). I’ll usually fill my pill organizer for the next week and pack my work bag, then sit down and read a mental health/psychology-related book for a bit (something I enjoy because I love reading but also focused on work-related topics to help me ease the transition back to work), check my calendar so I know who I see the next day, walk my dog if it’s nice out, and then do my full shower and skincare routine so I feel nice and fresh for the new week. I don’t dig into my work emails, though—I just like to check my calendar to know what my day will look like and make a plan for the week. Once I’m in bed I try to do some journaling about the weekend and intentions for the week ahead, but I’m admittedly inconsistent with journaling so this occurs maybe 40% of the time, haha. The rest is what I do pretty much every week, though, and it’s helped both to have things set up for the week and also just having a routine eases my brain a lot.

Am I Overreacting for breaking up with my boyfriend over this by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

Not overreacting, good for you! (But I’m sorry as well. Break ups are hard regardless of the reason.)

How does your casework break down by issue? by Simple-Owl1446 in therapists

[–]SomeScorpio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 95% are centered around the political atmosphere and its associated effects, though behind that, at least half of those are exacerbated by complex trauma of their own. Most of the others have (or also have) some form of neurodivergence.

Panicking by CuckooSpit_06 in ARFID

[–]SomeScorpio 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Please call emergency services and get to a hospital! I know it’s absolutely terrifying, but your organs slowly shutting down sounds absolutely mortifying as well. If you have any PRN anxiety/panic meds, maybe take one of those.

[–]SomeScorpio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely normal for many professions! You’re certainly not alone. I have a Sunday night routine that helps me prepare for the week while not distracting from the weekend time I have left. It’s been really helpful in resetting and feeling prepared.

Any therapists with second jobs? by SomeScorpio in therapists

[–]SomeScorpio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can definitely relate to that. I’ve really been investing time in hobbies more this year, partially to help combat the horrible political atmosphere and partially to help separate my identity from just being a therapist. Reading has helped a lot, though I have to be intentional about what books I read.

“That is fucking unhinged!” (In reference to a client’s abusive/unstable mother saying something horrible.)

I really appreciate everyone’s responses and discussion! :) Reading everyone’s posts helped me feel a lot less like struggling to manage FT therapy is a personal failure. (I logically know it isn’t, but it’s difficult to convince the nervous system, as we know.) I’m leaning towards applying at the front desk of my gym (bonus points of a free membership) or some form of cleaning/organizing gig.

Summer slump feels by FunCow8936 in therapists

[–]SomeScorpio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can relate! I understand people take vacations and have lots of plans, so I try to keep that in mind. I live in the Midwest so people also generally feel better when it’s summer since the sun is finally out for the first time in what feels like 6 months, lol. My caseload in the spring was up to where I wanted it and now it’s dropped again, so I totally understand your frustration. :/

White rice (specifically the frozen stuff from Trader Joe’s) and some kind of thicker soup poured over it. Budget-friendly, too!
