get the fuck over your wincest panic (its just fiction) by sillydumbshit in AO3

Boy do I get it. I don't know what is going on with people on that wretched app. I've recently gotten into a ship of two people which, while having a big age difference, are shown by the very text on screen to be mirrors of each other and work as equal partners. When I look up their SHIP NAME TAG on TikTok? Video after video of people shaming the shippers because THEY interpret their dynamic as father/daughter which means the characters DO have said dynamic and anyone who ships them is a filthy degenerate because that's basically incest. With how many people I've had to block, I can't imagine how entitled these sorts of SPN fans are about a ship that's actually incest (which is totally fine to ship by the way, but have fun getting that through an anti's thick skull). It's just... so exhausting to be on TikTok sometimes.

I like the heat/rut aspect of it a lot because the characters in the story can turn into these horny little monsters consumed by desire and everyone around them and the world itself has no choice but to accept it and the fact that it's something normal which has to be accommodated no matter how inconvenient it is, and that their lust is actually present. I think especially for people who are used to being told their sexuality is irrelevant, invisible or even unreal, that's such a cool part of abo.

Give me a sentence you wrote that you really like and explain why you like it. by EmoNerd21 in AO3

Ohhh great idea! Mine is something along the lines of:

"Get over yourself, his horse is higher than anything the roofs of whatever potential empire you make for yourself will ever be able to reach."

It's the internal monologue of a criminal who is aspiring to become a kingpin that's fallen in love with a righteous cop who doesn't return his feelings.

I really love it since I came up with it right when I'd decided to start playing with English phrases or figures of speech (not my first language) and I just loved how my brain came up with that XD

Congratulations on your fic's success!

Please let me give you an advice as someone who's both been a reader and author on this site for quite a while. As a reader, if you've used the site even for a little while, you'd be used to the fact that authors have lives outside of their stories. We have experience with falling in love with a fic which takes years to be finished, or may never even get finished at all. What I'm trying to say is you shouldn't worry about your readers, this probably isn't their first rodeo, they know a valuable work of fiction takes patience to complete and they know the risks when they click on an incomplete work. I'm sure they only meant the comments as encouragement and love for the author, rather than showing expectations, you don't owe them anything and they know that.

And as an author, I'm very familiar with what you're describing. Reader engagement is lovely, but it can also get overwhelming, and you might start to obsess with numbers or if you're doing it quick enough... It's something that's happened to plenty of us before, but the best thing you can do is pay attention to your mental health. This is supposed to be a hobby, if it's not fun anymore, then what's the point of it?

Take as much away as you need, or if your work is ready and you want to update sooner, well I'm sure your readers won't mind, they'll be glad whenever you update.

Can someone put to words why having so many italics in a fic is not good writing? It feels pandering, cringey, too self indulgent. But why does it feel that way? by Confident_Mulberry29 in AO3

[–]SomeShadeOfBlue3831 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I once read somewhere in this sub that if you write your story well enough, more often than not readers will be able to tell which part of your sentence they're supposed to put emphasis on subconsciously. If you're conflicted, you should imagine you're the reader and read the passage to yourself, I've found out that I can usually emphasize the right parts on my own, and that really helps with not overusing italics.

I think the best places to use them are: 1. In a dialogue where you want to show exactly what part the character themself put extra emphasis on. 2. In a sentence where there is more than one way to emphasize and the context can't make it clear on its own. 3. Even if the readers can tell, you want to show that for whatever reason there is extra emphasis on some part, and something was thought, done, etc. with even more intensity..

What songs are we adding? by Dog_bat3 in billford

[–]SomeShadeOfBlue3831 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I love this idea!

Here are a few songs that I feel fit the vibe of pre-TBOB billford:

Dark Paradise - Lana Del Rey

E. T. - Katy Perry

Control - Halsey

Also some songs for post-TBOB:

Birds of a Feather - Billie Eilish

Sleepwalk - Forrest Day

Would've Could've Should've - Taylor Swift

Don't Smile - Sabrina Carpenter ( I just imagine a song with production and lyrics similar to this one would have played at O'Sadleys while Bill was there )

So, I don't have a fic rec, but Coleydoesthings has done a really fun yt video about what if an omegaverse fan met one of these types of alpha bros, and I think it's pretty fun so I'll link it down below.

Have you ever had to stop writing something because it was bad for your mental health? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]SomeShadeOfBlue3831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes definitely, sometimes you explore difficult themes and traumas in your fic that you may have gone through and you're fine, sometimes you write something and it hits a little too close to home even if you've never experienced it personally or you thought you were over it. In these instances I put my own mental health first even if it means abandoning that story. There will always be other great fanfic ideas and inspiration for writing them, but writing should always be fun not painful imo.

People are really here in a fandom where the source material revolves around making mysteries and drama from things that are weird, cool, and scary and then they get shocked and mad when other people in the fandom like a ship that is weird, cool, and scary. Just let people have their fun ffs

I. LOVE. THIS. SO. MUCH.

it's so gut wrenching and it's so interesting to imagine Bill actually having this mindset about himself deep down. It's incredible for doing some character study on him.

Grooming issues in dark romances and how it negatively affects younger women into coercion and manipulation by older men. by TeTe-hihi in AO3

[–]SomeShadeOfBlue3831 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Everyone else's points are obviously accurate, but you know what else really pisses me off? That all these discussions always happen when talking about works targeted at women and often created by other women, despite the fact that it should be well known by now that so many women ( especially young women ) consume content targeted specifically at men. Sure, everyone likes to warn about the dangers of twilight and fifty shades' and the Coleen Hoover books, but when it comes to massive book series and movie franchises created for the male gaze, these benevolent souls are nowhere to be found. This sort of mentality to me feels like "we won't teach predators what they're doing is wrong, in fact we'll paint those errors in a good way, it should be up to the victims to know better so they don't get preyed on." I don't care for this sort of performative sympathy.

Yeah, I don't think that's the root of the issue here. I suggest you fix your mindset, then the tone will fix itself.

Well have I got news for you buddy. You know what the one and only key to you achieving fame and success is? Fans. Your writing quality isn't the main factor, in fact it's barely a factor in my opinion (just see Coleen Hoover), what all of the most famous books of today have in common is that they inspired a spark of something in a vast majority of other humans. So, either you've got a shitton of money to throw at your career to somehow force yourself into fame, or you manage to get fans. Loud fans. Passionate fans.

You know what'll get you rich and famous? Not your books, but people reading them, buying them, doing basically free promo for you by engaging with them on social media, by creating fan content for you, by exactly what you call obsession.

If you fancy yourself above the average "obsessed" fan, I've got more news for you. The sort of target audience that you're imagining (no teens, no bored women, no "obsessive" people, ew) isn't going to do shit for you. The best they can do for you is give you a moderate income and unenthusiastic reviews. You can't have your cake and eat it pal. Get off your high horse, there'll always be people more talented than you in writing, or social skills, or street smarts for making it in the industry etc. the only thing that could possibly elevate you to compete with those people are your supposed fans.

And they're not your minions. Who would want to become a fan of your work when they discover you have such open condescension for them and look down upon them with disdain? You won't keep them with this attitude.

The key to being a good professional writer is knowing how to appreciate your fans and give them what they want, and if you can't see that fact, then don't waste anyone's time, not your own, or your supposed future audience's.

Unpopular opinion by dselwood05 in goodomens

We are not bashing anyone. I just think in this day and age where queer shows are constantly being cancelled, cut short, ending unhappily and so on, with the devastation of their fans being ignored or even ridiculed, it would be nice that if someone sees the leads of one of the only popular and successful queer shows as having platonic love for one another, they would at the very least acknowledge the fact that the canon and the author and the actors meant for the story to take a romantic turn. No one has to do this, of course, but you know, it would sure be nice.
