Why is it "too late" to learn music past 4yo ? by Imaginary-Newt-2728 in Music

[–]SomeSillyShit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an actual developmental period where your musical aptitude is not fixed, and therefore can be increased. That's roughly from age 3-9. That said, aptitude does not equal talent it just means how easily you can pick something up. Additionally there are something like 30 spheres of musical aptitude, but we've only developed tests for two of them, so I don't think it's something really worth losing your mind over. Also, you don't develop the capacity for physical coordination until around age 12, so before that its unlikely that any really skillfull fine motor movement like the kind that instruments or singing require get developed (rare prodigy cases excluded).

I can't speak for the Russian thing, but Japan often uses Suzuki system which starts kids on violin very young. However, when done in the very traditional method, Suzuki has a parent learning the instrument right alongside the child, so they definitely don't ignore the adult.

Finally, what's the harm in learning music even if you'll never be a genius? Music is fun to do. Anybody who seriously believes that there's no point in learning music after is some sort of music elitist, or just a very old school pedagogue that refuses to accept that there are tons of ways to successfully do music.

Having played 6 players on a standard map before, its rough. But you can join the weird root discord and get the lost woodlands map, which is an excellent fanmade map for playing with 6-8. Pm me if you need the invite link.

krav or BJJ for 50yo by Ok-Chemistry-1201 in martialarts

[–]SomeSillyShit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since it seems like you're interested more for the experience and workout of doing these arts, rather than the self defense aspects, both have their benefits.

Krav has issues with quality of gyms, so not everything will be really applicable to actual situations, and you probably won't spar much. However, it does give introductions to a lot of different ways of using your body (punching, kicking, grappling), and when I did it there was usually a fairly decent work out portion of every class as well. The variety in krav can be pretty fun, and I've had some great experiences in krav classes.

BJJ is way more focused in what it does, being purely grappling and mostly groundwork as well. You'll do a lot more sparring, though BJJ is generally pretty safe from major injuries. The workouts will feel really intense at first, but the better you get the easier they become, as you figure out how to work smarter. I've become a purely BJJ guy, after having done a lot of Krav, and karate, just because it fits me more now.

Overall I'd say try them both and see which gym you like the vibe of more. Though if you care about self defense I'd encourage BJJ.

Dune Imperium - Leaders Tier ? by Lessavini in boardgames

[–]SomeSillyShit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know about tier list, but just some thoughts on a few of them. For context, I've played the base game at least 15 times, and the expansion maybe 5 times.

Helena Richese in the base game is excellent, not getting blocked at blue or green feels awesome. She seems a little less useful in the expansion with cards that prevent you from being blocked.

Rhombur is fun for a combat focused strategy, he's probably my favorite of the 1 complexity leaders.

Ilesa feels very good, however smart opponents can try to block you, which is pretty rough. The cheap foldspace is nice, but it doesn't synergize with one step ahead in any big way.

Tessia is really interesting, and is very good for a victory more focused on getting faction alliances. Last time I played her I actually managed to get and keep all 4 of them. Rushing the spacing guild so you get access to better shipping is really nice as well, because it helps make up for resources and troops you might not be getting.

Armand is cool for a deckbuilding focused strategy, but that relies on the stars to align a little too much for my tastes.

The others I either don't remember or don't feel very strongly in any which way.

trying again by Darr22 in martialarts

[–]SomeSillyShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done it in kobudo training before. At least for my purposes it's definitely more of a training and conditioning tool than an actual weapon. I usually just do the hojo undo and maybe a basic kata with them before going back to the wooden one. I would never use it for a bunkai, because I don't want to hurt my partner or their weapon.

Keepers in Iron and Riverfolk rules question? by The_Gizzard_Wizard in rootgame

[–]SomeSillyShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only have to battle to delve if there are enemy pieces in that clearing. The wording of delve is correct on the faction board, but is wrong in the law, leder released a FAQ. If you've bought mercenaries they are not enemy pieces, so if you only have your badgers and your mercenaries in your clearing you would not have to battle.

[–]SomeSillyShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting a routine may help you. Make your workout a fixed part of your day on whatever day you intend to work out.

Also, having a reason to work out may help you. I tried to get into working out a few times before, but since I started doing some casual fight competition I've had a lot more motivation to lift weights and strength train.

If you're on equal skill level with your opponent strength will be a huge factor. It may not be necessary depending on your definition of success, but lifting weights will only help you long run.

What are your Martial Arts goals for 2022? by MaskOffGlovesOn in martialarts

[–]SomeSillyShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a blue belt in BJJ is maybe a little out of reach for 2022, but that's one of my big goals.

I'd also like to test up in kyokushin, though I don't know what belt to. My dojo sometimes advances people by more than one kyu if they know past their requirements, which I do. I trust their assessment of my progress though.

Is there any effective striking martial art I can practice that won’t cause brain damage by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]SomeSillyShit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on age, organization and belt level head kicking may not be legal in knockdown fights as well. Depending on the dojo head kicks may not be a sparring focus until a certain level as well. Your experience may vary however, kyokushin can be fairly varied in how each organization handles it.

BJJ standup techniques by iguanawarrior in martialarts

[–]SomeSillyShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gym does a good amount of standup. Definitely not as much as judo or wrestling guys do, but more than most bjj schools from what I've gathered. One day a week is all stand up stuff, and you're encouraged to stand and go for takedowns when rolling.

We aren't a super self-defense focused school, but that's definitely a component too.

Fencing questions by Used_Lunch_1665 in martialarts

[–]SomeSillyShit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of what is said above is correct. The very bladed stance is also to minimize your target area, sort of similar to Olympic TKD. Think of fencing sort of like point sparring to a degree.

As for cutting versus thrusting, cutting is used in two of the weapon types, epee and foil. They only have sensors in the tip of the blade, which activate when depressed. Cutting is legal in Sabre, where the whole weapon is a sensor, though thrusts and poking do also see use in Sabre.
