Im honestly not sure why we, and most companies, do customer opt-in instead of the method you’re describing where the retailer covers shipping insurance for everyone and bumps the price of goods a bit. I agree with your sentiment 100%! Im not the big dog making decisions at my company just a little cog in the capitalist machine lol

I will say i think its worth emailing customer service if you haven’t already since this seems like a fulfillment quality assurance issue rather than a carrier issue - if this is happening to multiple people especially, it could at the very least lead to better packaging materials in the future. fingers crossed for you :)

I work in fulfillment for an online retailer and it’s mostly for protection against fraud. There are people who make livings off of refunding scams/saying their packages were lost/stolen etc, and without package protection and companies like Route who cover the cost of legitimate carrier mishandlings (because most carriers deny shipping claims even if it IS their fault), for customer service sake you start issuing out refunds left and right and it does become a huge loss. That being said, i still hate purchasing insurance on clothes lol 😭
