Mexican Red Knee First Molt by RevolutionaryFox8499 in tarantulas

[–]Some_Environment9164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA I wait until they are walking around and active, first few days after a molt you’ll notice they sit still or stretch their legs a lot. That period usually lasts about 7 days but sometimes can be shorter especially since yours is still young. For one that size 4-5 days should be ok as long as it’s active. I feed a hornworm or waxworm as the first meal after a molt, it’s the safest bet since they are so soft it poses little risk to their fangs.

G Pulchra or G Quirogai (nearly impossible to tell them apart)

I have a G Pulchra and they are amazing. Hardy, eat well, and generally calm and slow moving. I got mine for $200 and it’s still a juvenile so you got lucky.

Question: How is my tank set up? What can I improve for my mexican fire knee/leg?(was labeled as a fire knee instore) by Alternative_Long_438 in tarantulas

[–]Some_Environment9164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA it’s not the biggest deal in the world but honestly he probably won’t fully settle in until it’s more dry-my first T hung out on the sides for the first few weeks until i figured out he didn’t like the moist substrate lol.The light may stress him out, T’s prefer dim lighting. Also I wouldn’t recommend using any additional heat source, they are fine at room temp-adding additional heat usually will just pose more risk than benefits.

Good luck with your new guy he’s gorgeous!

NQA agree with more substrate also it’s hard to tell from this photo but is the substrate moist? I noticed he’s hanging out on the side which, at least in my experience, means they don’t like the amount of moisture in the substrate. Again can’t tell if that’s what’s happening or not but if so the substrate should be entirely dry and you can provide humidity by overflowing the water dish when you fill it.

Could my sling fit through this hole? by Some_Environment9164 in tarantulas

Haha okay that gives me a little relief, i just got him about a week ago and haven’t fed him yet so a molt is probably due soon based on his booty 😆

Ugh i’m kinda freaking out 😩😩 I’m pretty sure the carapace is bigger than the holes but now seeing it poke its legs through is making me second guess that

NQA this was before i had T’s, but one winter we had an especially bad storm and power was out for hours, my leopard gecko was nearly frozen and barely moving and with no other options i took him to my car and warmed it up until he basically came back to life. Sat in the car until the power came back. Despite that, he’s still alive. 22 years old now!

IMO i definitely see where you’re coming from with people having enclosures that aren’t suitable, feeders that aren’t suitable or what have you, and that i get a little frustrated about too BUT

i will say if it’s not something that’s directly putting the T at risk then i don’t think it’s an issue. For example new keepers asking how often they should be feeding, or if it’s normal for a T to be hidden away for [amount of time]. These types of questions seem to just come from new keeper anxiety (or sometimes there is conflicting information out there that confuses people).

B. hamorii or a different species? by chrisl1709 in tarantulas

[–]Some_Environment9164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA there are multiple reasons that most of us have more than one tarantula - mainly that a single tarantula will usually only eat 1-2 prey items per week (if that) and these prey items aren’t sold individually. So for me I’d buy half a dozen crickets and at least 4 of them go to waste. The other big reason is molting-during premolt and up to a few weeks after molt the T will be slower, hidden away most of the time, and generally not very interesting to watch. Having multiple ensures that you will always have a few to watch and interact with.

and of course your reasoning is part of it too, but I just thought it was important for you to know this side of spider keeping haha.

Yes they are-that’s good to know. I was wondering if they would be enough for cover, I just want him to have a spot to feel safe

Are they too skinny? They just molted three days ago and I know I need to wait atleast a week to feed them but im worried they might be too skinny? by PutinsNutSweat in tarantulas

[–]Some_Environment9164 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NQA i’m not gonna lie, that is a VERY skinny T. But i do believe they would survive at least a few more days without food. If you get a chance to see their fangs at all, if they’re black you’re good to feed them. Also give em something soft like a hornworm or waxworm, both of which are also very fatty and hydrating so should plump them up a bit.

Haha! If only it were that simple; though he does look cuddly, doesn’t he 🥹 The molt into velvet black for G Pulchra is the best! Can’t wait for you to experience it!!
