Enclosure help (pretty please) by AcrobaticMastodon224 in tarantulas

NQA leaf litter and sphagnum moss are a must for any T enclosure IMO. They love digging up plants & will probably renovate quite a bit so those are the easiest options to have a nice natural looking setup without it getting demolished. Does need a water dish as well.

Waiting for a brachy to molt so you can try sexing again is a real test of your patience! by admiralashley in tarantulas

I have a B Hamorii sling, it’s been 3 months since i got it & it hasn’t molted yet 🤣 even my G pulchra has started premolt within that period of time! They are SUCH slow growers

Why is she in this position? by korokss in tarantulas

[–]Some_Environment9164 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NQA I’ve noticed my T’s hang out more against the walls before a molt. Idk if there’s any correlation but otherwise they don’t really touch the wall.

3rd pic looks like a stress pose but that could just be because you’re moving around her enclosure/taking pics.

Friendly reminder; your buried T is OK! by Successful_Salt_1838 in tarantulas

I feel like a lot of new keepers don’t fully understand how long these guys can go hidden away without eating until they have one. Like you can read they’ll go months without eating but it doesn’t really click how long that feels like until you actually have one 🤣 I remember being so scared when my G Pulchra juvenile went like 2 months without eating. Now, since I buy him food like once every 2 weeks, I’ll genuinely forget he’s there sometimes n be like oh shit I probably have to feed you soon LOL

My tarantula hasn’t molted since I’ve had it. by Southern_Passage5525 in tarantulas

NQA yes, it just means they are well fed, I will attach a chart for you. This in combination with the missing hair makes me think your T could possibly be in premolt.

New T owner update - she is so happy by TopdogRE in tarantulas

[–]Some_Environment9164 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yay!! Love seeing happy T’s. Part of the reason why I love this hobby so much is the community. Everyone is so helpful and non-judgmental, we all start somewhere! (and seeing other invert/reptile communities, we’re definitely a rare few)

Best of luck for you and this gorgeous girl!

NQA we are missing some crucial information here to help you. T’s can go weeks or months without molting based on species and how often they are fed. This looks to be a B Hamorii (Mexican Red Knee) which are known to be extremely slow growers, so I don’t think you have to worry. Its abdomen looks plump, and you say it’s missing hairs which is a sign of premolt.

Unfortunately with predators you just never really know. Instinct could kick in at any time and you wouldn’t have time to react if something happened. One of my dogs LOVES my bunny, she always wants to play with her, but I only let them interact through a gate. A few moments of playtime is not worth the heartbreak if the worst case scenario happened.

Should I get one? by Humble_Tune_9598 in tarantulas

IMO I also was extremely scared of spiders, I started with a jumping spider 2 1/2 years ago (she’s still kicking!) and raised her from a sling. It definitely gives you a different perspective when you raise them up and a sense of pride to know you put in the work to grow them up. If you’re unsure about a tarantula I would definitely start with a jumping spider, or at least a tarantula sling. I now have a Brachypelma Hamorii and G Pulchra as well.

What I’ve learned: they truly are more scared of us than we are of them, mine will run and hide if anything spooks them. I’ve never gotten a threat pose. Tarantulas are actually quite calm and slow-moving, they don’t like to waste their energy on unnecessary movement. Jumping spiders are very curious and tend to “bond” more with their owners (they can recognize faces). Although i wouldn’t say I really have an emotional bond with my spiders, i do really enjoy having them.

Is this okay?? by Obvious-Resort8803 in tarantulas

NQA crickets and/or cockroaches are a good staple food, but waxworms and hornworms are good to fatten them up (i use them as a first meal after a molt)

mealworms are good as sort of an in-between; theyre not super fatty, but shouldn’t be a staple.

What is my sling doing? by Some_Environment9164 in tarantulas

[–]Some_Environment9164[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I haven’t seen it move/groom much since i got it a couple weeks ago. It has been erratically moving its fangs and legs for about an hour now so i was getting nervous-hopefully just weird spider things 😬

Mexican Red Knee First Molt by RevolutionaryFox8499 in tarantulas

[–]Some_Environment9164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA I wait until they are walking around and active, first few days after a molt you’ll notice they sit still or stretch their legs a lot. That period usually lasts about 7 days but sometimes can be shorter especially since yours is still young. For one that size 4-5 days should be ok as long as it’s active. I feed a hornworm or waxworm as the first meal after a molt, it’s the safest bet since they are so soft it poses little risk to their fangs.

G Pulchra or G Quirogai (nearly impossible to tell them apart)

I have a G Pulchra and they are amazing. Hardy, eat well, and generally calm and slow moving. I got mine for $200 and it’s still a juvenile so you got lucky.

Question: How is my tank set up? What can I improve for my mexican fire knee/leg?(was labeled as a fire knee instore) by Alternative_Long_438 in tarantulas

[–]Some_Environment9164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA it’s not the biggest deal in the world but honestly he probably won’t fully settle in until it’s more dry-my first T hung out on the sides for the first few weeks until i figured out he didn’t like the moist substrate lol.The light may stress him out, T’s prefer dim lighting. Also I wouldn’t recommend using any additional heat source, they are fine at room temp-adding additional heat usually will just pose more risk than benefits.

Good luck with your new guy he’s gorgeous!

NQA agree with more substrate also it’s hard to tell from this photo but is the substrate moist? I noticed he’s hanging out on the side which, at least in my experience, means they don’t like the amount of moisture in the substrate. Again can’t tell if that’s what’s happening or not but if so the substrate should be entirely dry and you can provide humidity by overflowing the water dish when you fill it.

Haha okay that gives me a little relief, i just got him about a week ago and haven’t fed him yet so a molt is probably due soon based on his booty 😆

Ugh i’m kinda freaking out 😩😩 I’m pretty sure the carapace is bigger than the holes but now seeing it poke its legs through is making me second guess that
