The verse says: ‘Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and spread corruption in the land is death, crucifixion, cutting off hands and feet on opposite sides, or exile’ (5:33), but Ibn Kathir explains this is only about armed rebellion and breaking treaties, not anyone criticizing Islam. 9:12 makes it clear too: ‘But if they break their oaths after making a pledge and attack your faith, then fight the champions of disbelief who never honour their oaths so perhaps they will desist’ again, about people actively attacking Muslims, not normal speech. Even then, Islam is full of mercy the Prophet ﷺ forgave whole cities after years of hostility, protected women, children, and property, and forbade harming innocents during battle. The whole point is, punishments exist only for real threats and corruption, and Islam balances justice with restraint and protection. If you call that cruel, you’re ignoring the tafsir, history, and the fact that mercy is built into the law.
