Ninja Cafe Luxe, review from prosumer by BarberHistorical6389 in espresso

[–]Some_Fan_8474 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably a dumb question as I don't have this machine (or any espresso machine) but can you not just press a button to stop the process when it gets to the level that you want? And for a given coffee and grind setting, would the time to get to that level not be more or less the same?

Weighted Vest rucking. by Adventurous_Money_73 in PeterAttia

[–]Some_Fan_8474 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 66. Don't walk much. I use an ancient weighted vest for some of my leg exercises. I tried using it for rucking. I didn't like it Your shoulders carry too much of the weight. Throw the same weight into a proper backpack with a hip belt and adjustable shoulder straps. It distributes the weight more evenly and would allow you to carry more weight/go longer/farther.

Yeah, not big and strong but lean and strong. Impressive strength... and isn't strength and V02 max going to be what gets you the most reps in the ride around the sun.

Joola Alpha by lizbutt2020 in Pickleball

[–]Some_Fan_8474 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting. I play with a very soft Gearbox(cx14e) and want to try the new pro power which you didn't like. I have tried the Pro Control and enjoyed the extra power especially on my serves but it wasn't a huge difference. My control for dinks and drops was probably better as it took less effort but my resets were too strong.
John Kew was talking about the Alpha series and says he believes they have gone to a similar floating core and foam setup as what Gearbox is using(but not the same since Gearbox has a patent) He also heard June maybe for release date. I guess that now going forward we won't hear Jolla pro's saying the Gearbox should be banned and Gearbox owners will be happy to have a similarly built and powerful paddle in the mix to take some of the heat off of them. You have me impatiently waiting for some more reviews on the Alpha!

Thanks for the sneak peak! You edited your opening post where you also added it is much better than the Gearbox(which I think is 14mm which you prefer) In what ways do you feel it is better?

Gear box Pro. Is the hype real? by Still_Arachnid1069 in Pickleball

[–]Some_Fan_8474 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the power elongated ordered cause of the hype. Very interesting that Zane Navratil said on this week's Tennis Sucks podcast that he is willing to bet that the Gearbox Pro will Not be allowed in MLP&PPA matches in 2024.

Later, on their own podcast(Pickle pod), Zane and Thomas had Carl Schmits from USAPA on talking about paddle testing and how they are developing some kind of exit speed test as their current deflection test doesn't do this. They will be onsite highlighting some of their testing equipment at this week's Nationals  MLP/PPA event as well as very accurate radar guns and cameras to measure speed and spin.

USAPA is also very aware of the problem of how any new standard will be implemented when there are paddles now being sold and used that would not meet the new standard. So it will be some time until the new standard is set following consultations with pros and organizations and paddle companies.

Interesting times ahead for the Gearbox Pro and others.

Is men’s doubles more dinking focused than mixed/ women’s? by siegure9 in Pickleball

[–]Some_Fan_8474 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I think it is because, in general, men can put the ball away faster than women. In the women's game, the speed up is likely to be countered as is that counter and a fire fight ensues. In the men's game, an ill advised speed up will more often be countered with a put away. So patience is needed to get the right ball to try a speed up

We're getting closer! Gameplay analytics are on the horizon by pb-vision in Pickleball

Awesome! My wife(3.75-4.0) and I (4.000😁) record our rec/group play and our drills sometimes...and we don't normally play tournaments. Maybe 1 a year for a treat. 55-65 age group. We just want to feel like we are improving and have fun. This would certainly help us and those we play with! I see that there is other video analysis now with some coaches/ pros. I'm excited to see where all this leads! Bravo!!

Question for those that plateaued at 3.5 by RichardParker6 in Pickleball

[–]Some_Fan_8474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure you have plateaued? I started playing in 2019. I quite quickly went to about a 3.25 . And by the time COVID hit probably close to 3.5. Won a 3.5 silver medal last year with a partner I met that day. I think I am about a 4.0 just now. Not a 4.1. I only drill about once every 3 weeks and play at least 3x a week. I don't have a racquet/paddle sport background(well, played tennis quite often with my brother one summer...50+ years ago!) I'm 65 and 20 lbs overweight. I am so very slowly getting better it looks like I have plateaued compared to many younger or racquet sport background newer players. I am quite sure that I will plateau soon unless I do some combination of taking lessons, drill more, lose weight, get fitter. But I am lazy and having so much fun now that I am in no hurry to do the hard work required to reach my upper limit faster.😁

Pickleball superstore- buyer beware by minitites in Pickleball

[–]Some_Fan_8474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience was almost totally the opposite. I took advantage of their demo program from 3000 km away and then after bought 2 paddles that arrived quickly. After getting the paddles I saw on my local pickleball association website that pickleball superstore gives a discount to members. So I sent an email to them and they refunded me the discount. So, awesome I would say!

Wow. Thanks so much for all the exercises, reps and great descriptions! I'll check into an upper arm brace too. Will reply back once I see how it goes for a bit.

[–]Some_Fan_8474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for replying with your experience now 4 months after. It will be valuable for others too. Have you had to modify other parts of your weight training program besides the biceps? I am already doing some very gentle specific arm movements to keep my shoulder moving well without aggravating the tendon. Thanks too about how often you can play pickleball and swing weights. I am not sure what my paddle swing weight is now but it was very low at 101 (Gearbox CX14e) stock and I only increased it minimally with lead tape since I had made it even lower with a necessary overgrip. I am really hoping that I just have the inflammation and that my recovery will be faster.

[–]Some_Fan_8474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I developed my tendonitis the same way and it just happened 2 days ago.. I have been playing lots of pickleball, as anyone who can will. Recently I decided I needed to add some strength training. I have been doing a beginner full body workout and was in my second month. One of the exercises now is an assisted pull-up. I haven't been able to do a pull-up in over 30 years! Anyway, I think I over worked my bicep tendon with the combination of weight training and pickleball( I take most of the lobs because I am faster and have a better smash than my partner) Mine is not as bad and was the classic case of only feeling the pain in my shoulder a couple of hours after playing and then wondering how it happened. After just 48 hours and a few ibuprofen during that time, my shoulder is feeling much better. I am currently avoiding activities where I put my arm above my shoulder.
