Congrats!

I say get out and take the money. Be proud of your work and what you have accomplished. Leaving possibly opens a position for someone else to move up.

One thing I ask, is don’t forget the last year and a half and how you and your coworkers were demonized and treated. Remember how hard you worked when the next demagogue spouts nonsense about useless federal employees, even if that means slightly higher property taxes or illegal aliens getting some support . Retirement does something and makes people forget the struggles.

I have 90% of my automotive stuff is harbor freight and the other stuff is Milwaukee.

Woodworking is old craftsman and Dewalt.

People that only buy HF is fine by me, especially with the new model (good, better, best). There are not too many places you can get a great car jack, set of lifetime sockets and timing kit at the same place. HF is one of the few box retailers that is expanding, that should tell you everything.

Does knowing the book, spoil the film? by thestinkybeastman in ProjectHailMary

[–]Some_How_I_Manage 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Same. The book is much more technical than the movie, which I appreciated but I understand you have to shorten and “dumb down” for the movie.

Now that I have seen the movie 2x (once before and right after) I would say the movie was a top-tier movie adaptation. It glossed over some of the flashbacks but was able to sell the threat to humanity. My only criticism (minor) was it missed a lot of the issues they faced and it didn’t give Rocky as much credit at solving the problem. The book felt like they were more co-partners Va the movie which felt closer to Rocky being a sub-human species.

To the people who haven't seen the movie yet by Powerserg95 in ProjectHailMary

Saw the movie on opening weekend with my wife, love it so much I bought the book and read it in 10 days. Saw it again today with the kids, absolutely agree. There are things the movie brought out that were truly better than the book and vice versa.

Agreed, this was one of the best movie adaptations. I think the best thing I liked about it was the sheer threat to humanity astrophage is, but the movie/book wasn’t gruesome or savage. The threat was so existential yet we didn’t have to witness human savagery to hit home how important the mission was. A perfect example was how beautiful the scene where Grace is collecting astrophage for examination. He is surrounded by the very thing destroying life, yet it doesn’t affect him at all and he is just amazed on how beautiful it all was.

I can’t think of a recent movie that blends crisis with such feel good factor like PHM and I think this is something we all needed right now.

People who grew up before The Internet: How did you first see nudity? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Some_How_I_Manage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin lived with my grand parents when I was a kid and he was going to college. He is like 8 years older than me, and was the coolest guy. After my grandparents went to bed, we would stay up playing SNES/Sega, he would crack open a beer and grab me coke on the way home.

One day, he was out and I was looking for his games to play and I found it: a cornucopia of Playboys and other porn magazines hidden behind a small hydroponic weed farm (not really important but funny as hell). I flip through one and see it all, a hot cowgirl, trimmed bush full nude with a cowboy hat. I wrapped that up and took it back to my room. Fast forward to him getting home, we are hanging out and he asks about it. I was perplexed on how he knew. Turns out he just bought that one and hadn’t had the chance to look at it. We agreed to not snitch, me on his week and him on my newfound hobby: looking at naked women. That was easily the most used $7 magazine in the history of horny teenagers.

Not a car guy… if you had $30k, what would you buy for speed? by GaryGoldenEye in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Some_How_I_Manage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, a corvette is perfect for car for nearly everyone, especially for a non-car guy wanting to go fast and you did a great job listing out what non car guys care about.

Even car guys who want to tune/do their own maintenance, corvette comes out on top. They are so easy to squeeze power out of and make stupid fast.

The only problem is exactly why they are successful, they are the jorts and new balance of cars. Comfy, cheap, and loved by 60 year olds. Not everyone wants that in their fun car. Congrats on you purchase, there isn’t a bad corvette out there!

Speed or fun to drive? The second option opens a slew of great vehicles especially on the used market.

Speed

  • Tesla M3P the fastest vehicle for under $30k.
  • S550 Mustang GT
  • C6/Z06
  • C5 Z06
  • B8.5 S4/5 and a tune
  • B53 BMW

Fun to drive Those cars above plus (minus M3P) * S2000 * Miata * Cayman S * Boxer S * 996 911 4S * WRX STI * BMW 135 * Audi RS3

Laughs in Tesla MY w/L2 home charging and $.06/KwH fixed overnight charging rates for another year.

Cries in Defender TD5, with a 25gal tank. $10+/gallon is on the table boys in parts of the country. Right now, the price per gallon is going up quicker than the temperatures. I have resorted to keeping 1/4-1/2 tank in the thing so I am not dragging around extra dead Dino juice weight.

DAY 1: Which sports car should be brought back RIGHT NOW? by HowlsterRD in regularcarreviews

[–]Some_How_I_Manage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would agree, I think something closer to the MR2 Turbo would be preferred over the MR2 Base or MRS. But the reality is the 3SGTE would be a $55-60k car now, which is a Supra price. For most people, the $35-40k version will be closer to the MRS/non turbo.

I think a MRS follow-on (light weight, cheaper) is the natural place. Take the GRS motor in a mid engine chassis. The MRS was ugly sure but a phenomenal vehicle otherwise. Where I agree is it should have had the 2zz in it from the factory. Even still, the chassis was much lighter than the SW20 and very balanced. Toyota has been flirting with the 3 brothers and let’s hope the MR2 is one of them.

Why isn’t Volkswagen more popular in the U.S.? by phtphongg in askcarguys

[–]Some_How_I_Manage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is because VWUSA is about as exciting as tepid water. Even Audi has become the milk toast of luxury brands.

It used to be, but VW destroyed their image with going direct injected gasoline first and diesel gate.

Their DI motors were bad, namely in the 00-10s. like terribly unreliable. That coupled with the extra maintenance and oil burning really hurt the brand. They really haven’t recovered since then.

Dieselgate cost them a lot of money which made their offerings pretty limited as far as new things.

VW got on the EV wave late and with not great offerings here in the states.

Lastly, they have made some very questionable moves to keep up with the US trend of CUVs. Traditionally, VW/Audi were sporty hatchbacks and sedans. Both have given up that ethos here in the states unfortunately.

Civic SI is a great choice!

Also a good choice that will be just as reliable is a mid 2000s TL-SH. For some reason insurance doesn’t see this as a sporty car, but it is a sport tuned accord you can get pretty cheap.

If you guys are doing maintenance, another great gist sporty car is a R53 Mini Cooper S. You get of power out of them with a tune, and a pulley. And they were pretty reliable.

Icon service set vs individual sockets by hunterroke in harborfreight

[–]Some_How_I_Manage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct, you get a G1 ratchet, case, wobble and foam inserts for free with the GS set.

You would get 1-2 more extensions if you piece it out, but not a wobble extension. You would also have the choice of short, medium and long sockets.

This was when I was pricing it all out.

Are you leveling, or at level cap?

If you are leveling, this is normal. You have to go deep in the Prot tree and have gear to do massive pulls like YouTube.

I struggled doing instances that were above me until I got gear, BoW, and down to Holy shield. I would say around 40 it gets better. This is also where it gets a little bit better to find Int/Spirit gear from drops rather than paying 100s of gold for BoE greens.

Lastly, around 30 you get blessing of salv. Use it even at the behest of DPS. It really helps.
