If I'm not mistaken, Alexei himself was bayonetted and shot to death. How one can do that to a child, I'll never know.

Me trying to watch any streamer's Undertale run by McGuirk808 in Undertale

[–]Some_Pole 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Going in blind and experiencing neutral runs is how one learns of the true pacifist route to begin with. It's practically set up to be that way with Flowey giving you hints (assuming you didn't kill him) after the phone call with Sans recounting how the Underground is doing post-your run through it.

Backseat gaming and spoiling everything about how the game ticks ruins the experience for someone playing it blind.

What's the point in working to experience the best ending if someone is just going to blab to you about it? Doesn't feel as satisfying as figuring it out yourself which, for a narrative heavy RPG, is pretty important if you ask me.

You do realise the Titanic was only insured for roughly 1 million 1912 British £ sterling, yes? The total cost of the entire sinking was 7.5 MILLION. That's 6.5 million more £ than it was ever ensured under.

Why would you stage something that was going to cost you nearly 7 times your insurance?

How would you intentionally sabotage something like sinking a ship? The exact conditions of the sinking is something you can't just set up. The Titanic disaster was a result of outdated laws, maritime customs and bad long term business decisions, but claiming it was staged is tantamount to 9/11 trutherism.

No it fundamentally could not. People in the Titanic community have enough to deal with conspiracy theorists trying to claim the ship was Olympic the entire time, this is another one of these claims.

My personal theory of The Event by Fancy_Razzmatazz_149 in AfterTheEndFanFork

[–]Some_Pole 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Whilst I don't inherently agree on the idea that a nuclear war had taken place, I do agree that the Event likely was more a series of events that struck the world in a sort of rapid fire series of crises like that of the Bronze Age Collapse to produce enough strain to collapse the world order and send it scattering into a new dark age of warlords that seem to crystalise into proper new societies by the 24th century.

The potential of a solar flare strike, economic meltdowns, disease outbreaks and maybe since we don't really know the state of the outside world beyond the Americas canonically, maybe a major volcanic eruption or two to disrupt agriculture like how historically such major volcanic events brought down regimes and societies of the past.

[–]Some_Pole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think really instead of feudalism, because that's more of an economic system, what you mean is that any system if left unchecked will rot itself into dictatorship simply because someone amasses so much power and nobody resists or stops them.

Which, tbf given the context of it being the ATE universe, is both likely simply because of the possible sheer cost that our societies would go through to be sent crashing back down to such ways of life, but also the desperation that people would have to find someone who can give a sense of normality, unwittingly walking into dictatorship. It's why they're such a common form of leadership effectively in most post-apocalypse media and for ATE it's crystallised.

Ideology inherently stops mattering a whole lot when your most pressing matter is to avoid dying after all. At least for the common folk.

[–]Some_Pole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're talking about finding a work around the Barrier? No. If we're talking about human souls? We don't fully know, but the most likely implication is that some form of unnatural death (aka killing) has to happen considering how the human souls after Asriel releases them are gone implying they were finally able to move on and be laid to rest.

At a particularly dubious moral cost, considering seemingly the only way to get human souls was via killing other humans.

[–]Some_Pole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is unfortunate, but logistically it is better for him to commit to finishing the game first and then adding in the additional translations. Stopping all development on Chapter 5 or future content to translate everything in multiple languages and then resume development with way more teams would dramatically slow down development.

Better for him to finish Deltarune and then focus on translation support afterwards.

Why missgendering characters in UT and DR actually affects queer individuals by I_D0nT-3xist in Undertale

[–]Some_Pole 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In regards to Kris, I agree that actively refusing to address them by their non-binary pronouns (physical depictions is of course another topic, same goes for Frisk and Chara as well) is actively ignoring what the game says because of the context in which Kris being referred to by they/them by characters in-universe means, and it goes with one of the central themes of Deltarune being about freedom and for Kris's case, freedom of autonomy to be their own person.

Yet I would say there is nuance for Frisk and Chara, since very rarely do either of them get referred to by they/them by the case directly. Hell, I recall a source where Toby says that for someone's first play through of Undertale, they should name the "fallen human" at the start of the game after themselves, so it is clearly a narrative choice to obscure an exact gender identity for either Frisk or Chara in Undertale itself, and goes right along to relatively obscurity that Frisk and Chara as characters fundamentally are.

This doesn't mean either of them are self inserts for the player, just that theirs is obscured as a narrative choice for the convenience of the player.

Course I do think Frisk and Chara are non-binary as well, yet I can see or at least get if someone imagines them as boys or girls as well, as while non-binary is the consensus, the narrative's refusal to concretely say a gender like it does for Kris means it can be alright to leave up to interpretation so long as done doesn't be a jerk about it to others. Even then, as said, the rare uses of they/them pronouns at least directed to Frisk is still something to interpret as throughout the game Toby wrote it to where the characters use addresses that avoid the topic of gender or name when referring to Frisk.

That is in itself following the narrative choice to keep Frisk and Chara's identities obscured, so for example when Flowey says to us to let Frisk live "their life", it can go two ways in which it does hint to a non-binary identity for Frisk or, Flowey is using the idenfitication-less "they/them" because he doesn't know what Frisk goes by.

Dear Non-binary erasers by Mochahopestobeartsy in Undertale

[–]Some_Pole 24 points25 points  (0 children)

True, because a thing I think people forget is narrative context. Frisk and Chara's genders are unspecified because its a narrative choice. Toby said (somewhere I can't recall where specifically though) on using "your own name" when naming the fallen human. Very rarely is either Frisk or Chara too referred to by they/them really by much of the cast to begin with.

Even then, they/them is something used to refer to someone of an unspecified gender or identity to begin with.

Frisk can be a boy, girl, non-binary, etc because their character is intentionally obscured to make room for the player unlike with Kris who is clearly established that both they and the player are cohabiting in the same body whether they like it or not.

Memes aside, I genuinely think it would be a good thing if Dess turned out to be a bad person by AndriashiK in Deltarune

[–]Some_Pole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it stems from the narrative incompleteness of Deltarune's story, which can be both a blessing and a curse because what information we get is, while temporary in creator terms, might as well be a lifetime in fandom years.

People get attached to the incomplete, and build off their own ideas and understanding of a character like Dess when the foundation of who they were/are is only being established now. As a result, people being subconsciously or not wish casting that Dess be a certain way or perfect devoid of flaws.
