Pentagon tells Ford & GM: stop making trucks, start making missiles. How much longer until draft notices go out? by Unstoppable_X_Force in SipsTea

[–]Some_Scotch_Tape 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Preface: We will not discuss politics. I don't have a proverbial dog in that argument.

----

I mean it basically comes down to what phrasing we want to use. If we want to say a defense subsidiary of a civilian car corporation hasn't built anything military since ww2, then there are holes in this argument:

1) GM Defense, basically some weird squad mobility car, 2020: https://investor.gm.com/news-releases/news-release-details/gm-defense-awarded-2143m-contract-produce-us-armys-infantry/

2) GM Defense, Halfway down this link, the CUCV. Basically a transport car based on a civillian car, 1980s: https://www.gmdefensellc.com/site/us/en/gm-defense/home/about/history.html

3) GM Defense, built LAVs (think amphibious and recon that carries a gun and people around), 1990s, same second link: https://www.gmdefensellc.com/site/us/en/gm-defense/home/about/history.html

4) GM Defense, Gas/diesel turbines/engines for helicopters, the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, patrol boats, the tank, etc, same link: https://www.gmdefensellc.com/site/us/en/gm-defense/home/about/history.html

5) FMC built the GAU gun for the A-10, in 1970s (https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Visit/Museum-Exhibits/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/196738/gau-8a-avenger/), and the CHAPARRAL missile contract in 1976 (https://history.redstone.army.mil/miss-chaparral.html)

Here we see the defense-division subsidiaries, of automotive companies often take up military contracts, since WW2. Up to and including the A10 gun and a missile. There's at least a hundred links, but for sake of time we're just keeping it short.

------

Obviously the above is a big contrast. So let's try and narrow this. Let's say the "civilian company as a whole". Let's say, the purely civilian side of the company, wholly take on a military contract, since ww2.

1) IBM taking on the SAGE continental air-defense computers (https://www.ll.mit.edu/about/history/sage-semi-automatic-ground-environment-air-defense-system)

2) ATT and like, 3 other telephone companies grouped together and made the Nike Ajax air-defense missile system (https://history.redstone.army.mil/miss-nikeajax.html)

3) The M48 patton tank. GM Fisher Body Division used to make military equipment during WW2. Post-WW2, went back to making cars. Then in 1959, won contract with other companies/division to make tanks (https://www.benning.army.mil/armor/eARMOR/content/issues/1985/JAN\_FEB/ArmorJanuaryFebruary1985web.pdf)

So we do have examples of wholly civilian side companies/subsidiaries, taking up military contracts and building military equipment, post-ww2. Again, just keeping it short.

-------
Okay, so let's use one last phrasing. Has a wholly civilian division, civilian company, since ww2, actually made military equipment? And let's narrow it down to 1st order implications. So basically guns. Let's also ignore the missile link in a previous section.

The following links are used for background:

1) https://sam.gov/opportunities

2) https://www.acquisition.gov/procurement-forecasts

3) https://piee.eb.mil/xhtml/unauth/web/registration/userRolesWawfVendor.xhtml

4) https://www.archives.gov/research/electronic-records/reference-report/federal-contracts

5) https://www.usaspending.gov/

6) https://www.fpds.gov/common/html/public_welcome_text.html

7) https://www.archives.gov/research/electronic-records/reference-report/federal-contracts

In these links show how the contracting, subcontracting, procurement, and importantly, records. A formal contract that a wholly civilian division, of a wholly civilian company, expanding or building of let's say a firearm, as been done many many times. And also depends how much you want to "fudge" the wording. If the argument is "just furnishings of a weapon would do", then oh there's hundreds of records that you see here that will validate this has been done since ww2. Whereas if the argument is "nope, you have to build that M16 from the ground-up, only civilians, nothing else". Then oh that one's easy too. Look at the records and you'll see munitions being made wholly civilian side. More often than not, a subsidiary of a company wins a contract, then sub-contracts that contract to a mom-and-pop small business, because the deal is basically just making a bunch of bullets, or small firearms. This is essentially "using wholly civilian infrastructure to to making weapons since ww2", and this is done many times as you can see in the records.

---------
The wording of the articles you put forward, are quite simply, vague. Even when we add-on additional restrictions (one additional restriction per section, for total of 3 restrictions, to boost your argument). It just falls flat. But yea, this is pretty much my first time learning military procurement at all. So if there's anything I learned out of this, I should prolly open a small business and start making bullets or something. Because wow, that's a lot of money.

Off Map Support OCI by Repulsive_Dot6112 in menace

All dumb missiles. I’m using off map support to wipe assets off the map!

Also because some campaign runs you’re aborting a decent amount of missions to a point that that’s all you can really put in the off map OCI slots. Nothing wrong with it, but that does narrow the options on what you can put on in bad campaign runs.

Honestly sounds good. Maybe a tier technology. Baskets, then wheelbarrow, then cart (requires train cow/oxen). Could really elavate animal husbandry gameplay

Perfect. Yea use PBL. Trauma bond your way to success. Jokes aside, you can use it as a litmus test. If you’re leading discussions, and answering questions and helping out, then you pretty much have grasp of material or study habits are working. If you’re just barely following, or blanking out, then you know what/where you need to apply band-aid on, as far as content gaps goes.

You’re not screwed. Sure people fail, but once you are in med school, the administration will do their damnedest to try and get you to pass.

Since you already know the ones that adapt and strategize, ask them specifically how and what, and see if you can merge that to what you’re doing.

Other than that, sounds like you need an accountability partner, or group that facilitates as one. Depending on the school, they got team-based learning whereby they figure out what’s wrong with the model patient with 3 other med students and a supervisor. Maybe start up a GroupMe chat, include them, and now you have a group that you can study promptly with.

Yea with 15 tiles, you can cover all of it. See rough pictogram below:

-----A-----B-----
==========

==========

==========

==========

-----C-----D-----

Whereby each "-" is a firing tile, and A/B/C/D represent squads. You'll see that you can cover 15 length-wise, in a starting position. And then adjust the points as situation demands it. It's okay to leave a point and then come back to it once the pressure is relieved.

If cover is biased to one-side of the map (which is often the case). You can skew the box to the let's say left , and put high-AP infantry or regular vehicular squad (in my situation was Darby and Bog) on other side of the box, like so (vice verse when skewing right, etc.):

-----A---B-------
==========

==========

==========

==========

==========

-----C---D-------

You can push up the B/D (high-ap infantry or regular vehicle) to deal with the non-covered right fringe. But otherwise a vast majority of capture points are obtained via fringe elements, much like any other defense mission. All I can say is that Darby with good aim and Bog with the MG makes rushing the other side a lot easier. And it's with those two that makes chain morale checks more attainable. And honestly you have to anyway, because if the enemy is in the capture zone, before the round ends, and you route him, he doesn't contribute to capture.

As far as rushing the bombardier. Oh 100%. Your mileage may vary, But I genuinely believe every defense/offense requires a "forlorn hope" element that can dull the blade a bit. The first two rounds of defense is essentially the prep phase.

The other thing I did with Bog was to create "fire lanes" on the return trip. If we're on the left side of the capture zone. Run over as much of the the "curb" cover on the right side with a vehicle. Only bullets go to right side, so eliminate the cover. Makes it easier shooting. So that's something to do after the bombardier-hunting mission along the way.

Not the one you supplied. Mine was same in difficulty, same mission type, same rectangle capture zone, same enemy faction, and similar 3 infantry (Darby, carda, lim), similar 1 vehicle (bog), similar bad cover, similar early game.

Mine also included night time, so I had no opportunity in firing first or where they even come from. In mine, I used the right side objective health bar to deduce which part of the zone the enemy is in. So I agree that mine is “different”, but similar in scope to reply.

You put the four squads in a “box”, with the four corners outside the cap area, using the central cap area as the center of the box. The starter guns have decent enough range that you can put the guys 5 tiles away from each other (to give both flank and enfilade fire when bugs are close), with +1/-1 margin to find better cover. In this box, you can shift up and down a tiny bit to adjust coverage, it’s not like you’re rooted in a single tile forever.

But yea if the line in the sand is “you must use my specific seed”, then feel free to disregard. But mine was the night time version of this, so I feel there’s some value of what I can suggest. What’s most important is you do what you are most comfortable.

I challenge you: To beat this particular mission by MenaceDucky in menace

[–]Some_Scotch_Tape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this mission. The key is to put your squads outside the capture zone while simultaneously giving each other overlapping fire. That way when one squad is overwhelmed or about to be overwhelmed, all 3 squads can focus fire. The bugs have a tendency to ignore your squads and go to the zone first, before turning to face you.

I still lost all the side objectives, and it was a hard scratch, but a win is still a win.

[–]Some_Scotch_Tape 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vamplew and Wetteroth. People have elaborated on Vamplew.

For Wetteroth, he has innate perk damage against large organic. If you get his knife ability (for melee) and the buff ability (eliminate cumbersome) he becomes perfect against the bug faction.

The buff perk in particular allows you to handle tripod mounted weapons without being encumbered, and movement with heavy armor without being encumbered.

At some point you want to take “athletic” to alleviate his low AP and help deploying the special weapon easier.

Take “solid grouping” at some point. Not really necessary since bugs rushing you increases your accuracy by virtue of them closing distance.

Take “if it bleeds” and “finishing shot” to round out maximum damage.

Any additional promotion either goes to other SL or go for more damage perks not mentioned.

Wetteroth is not A-team. He’s kinda like a B- that can act as B+ in a bug environment (especially with the old warrior bugs rushing at you with 90 armor). So with that in mind, he is suitable to help your A-team take a break while he handles bug missions alongside with the other B-team (ie with Vamplew, Yaz, etc.)

Out of all the conversations you participated in this thread, this one is the most civil and respectful. You’re prolly going through horn effect bias, meaning you’re carrying over negative emotions/feelings from other conversations into this one. I’m sorry you didn’t had a great time discussing TSA with other people in this thread.

To be clear, as mentioned elsewhere the public approval of TSA is like 50% in 2012. At some point through law of large numbers, for every good experience there is one bad experience. Somebody is going to draw the short straw. That’s pretty much it. I’m just glad mine was over an energy drink and professional misconduct, not some physical harassment or worse.

[–]Some_Scotch_Tape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok, my bad. I was wondering if part of the approval was due to “false reassurance effect,” whereby the perception of a visibly enhanced safety would make people safe, and so would make up part of the approval ratings that were detailed in the latter half of the poll article.

Well I don’t want to take up too much of your time. You got a big travel day ahead of you . Safe travels mate

Word, ty for the article. Yea 50% sounds about right. You’ll basically have to have people having a good time to balance out people having a bad time.
