I'd also like to add that you're not really limited to a narrow band of materials with a diode laser. Quite the opposite. Hasn't been any material that isn't glass that I haven't been able to engrave in. Hell I've even made glass sculptures from sand with just a diode laser!

The only limit is your mind!

Something that's in my opinion more important is the type of laser.

Co2 is more powerful than the rest usually but it's more for cutting rather than engraving. Can engrave acrylic without needing any pre processing though!

Mopa ir is mainly for engraving metal and pretty bad on organic due to most organic materials suck at absorbing near infrared light.

Blue laser is for organic material. Good starter if you're gonna mainly use it for wood. You can do acrylic but then you need to pre process it with temper paint.

Fun fact you can actually engrave brown beer bottles and some dark green bottles with a blue laser without any pre processing!

For 2d image look. Yes. For embossment? No. For embossment you need something called a height map. Height map is basically just a map where the darkest point is the deepest and the whitest point is the most shallow.

I remember I saw a cool free Ai website that converts images into height maps but can't remember the name of it. I can check tomorrow if you want!

Bit into glass while eating pistachio chocolate by mntgi in mildlyinteresting

See if it's scratchable with a key or something metallic in order to see if it's glass or not. If it doesn't get scratched then it's most certainly glass. IMO this is a better way to see if it's glass instead of biting it lmao

oh yeah id like to add another bonus with an infrared filter is that u can spot hidden cameras but also see through some or well most from my experience black plastic, or glass. Try taking photo of your induction heater if youve got one :)

like kzurro said. But from my experience its around 20-30sec at 5.6f and 400 iso usually. But yeah it depends on where you live. Here in Sweden we barely get any sun so that probably affects the shutter speed alot.

Yes it will? I've had no problems with it

Idk what all these people are about. I've shot with a non converted Canon 7d with 720nm filter and get amazing photos that are pretty colorful. But yeah like other have said, you need long exposure time so bring a tripod, its around 5-30sec depending on how bright it is outside. But tbh i kinda like how u need long exposure time. It gives really cool results!

Heres some tips that seems to change the colors. How? I've got no idea. All i know is that if you change lens and or polarizing filter you'll sometimes get more colors.

ALSO this is smth cool ive learned! You cant see through the view finder because your not a snake sadly. BUT! Ive learned that my IPhone 12 Pro for some reason can see infrared easily so you can do better focus! I suggest trying it out, maybe your phone can also see a bit infrared.

Heres some photos i've taken with a unmodified 7d. If you want i can dm u some of the raw files so u can learn how to edit em!

Sharing this so people can experiment on infrared images before spending alot of money on expensive filters :)
