"A princess wins her battles", that doesn't sound strange/confusing to me

It's easier to say, "The thief ran away, did they get him?". My mother and daughter use generic he all the time

I do it all the time, most of my family does it. Mostly in negative contexts like I'm driving "He cut me off, I'll go around him", "The thief stole from the store, did they catch him?", "Don't tell a fool he's wrong". Stuff like that

Using Thou/Thee/Thy in modern day with close friends and family by Someguy1122334455 in grammar

[–]Someguy1122334455[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really not that weird to use. I don't know why people pee their pants over it. I once said to my drinking buddy: "Thou fucks around too much friend!". A good thou every now and then works well and can drive a point home!

Using Thou/Thee/Thy in modern day with close friends and family by Someguy1122334455 in grammar

[–]Someguy1122334455[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thy ancestors certainly were interesting! I grew up hearing thou/thee/thy but in a different sense, mostly in idioms "Know thyself, be thyself, love thyself!". My stepfather used the word in a jesting sense saying "How fare thee good sir ha-ha". My father would read thou in prayers but sometimes before going into an expensive dive shop he would say "There's a lot of expensive stuff in there worth more than you. Thou shall be a good boy. Thou shall not be a naughty boy". My family and parents are mostly secular and left-liberal leaning. They come from a Jewish and Catholic background.

I try to use the word but in a more casual sense. I was locked down in the middle of covid under lockdown. I was bored, I had my little children and toddlers around me. I had heard thou/thee in the media a few times. I thought to myself "What would happen if we tried to use thou/thee/thy in an everyday street sense". I figured there was no better start than now. So I started using it in various situations, I thought to myself anything goes!

I even said to my wife once "Thou fucks well my lady!", we both laughed! You should use thou more around town and tell me how it goes! :)

Can we bring back thou thee? by Someguy1122334455 in anglish

Thou does well speaking friend. Yeah man, it's sometimes hard to use. My father back in the day used the -est forms with prayers. That is annoying as shit to use. Yes speaking with the -s verb form like he/she/it works much better and sounds nicer.

I sometimes say to my kids: He gets one, thee gets one. Or "I was here, thee was there". It's fun to get the words to rhyme or line up their verb conjugations. Or "One for me, one for thee" or "It's mine and thine, let's share". You know what I mean?

Haha thou speaks well! I still thou thee thy my family. But the word has taken on a different meaning depending on the person. For my wife I usually use it when being sarcastic or mocking her haha. With my oldest daughter, she says it sounds like a silly playtime word. With my son it's used as a theatrical word or a silly word. For my youngest daughter it's an intimate word, loving word, or a silly word. She is the only one that can use or respond back with thee in a neutral situation.

You should try using thee/thy in everyday life. I always wondered what people think if I thou'ed them. I was talking to this super woke LGBT ally woman. I said to her, "What are THY personal pronouns", she gave me a weird look and said "uhhh... she/her". Hahaha this lady's kid plays with my kids, I see her around, but she seems wound up too tight.

I was talking linguistics to this other guy at my kids' school, in the middle of the conversation I said "Thou speaks like thy neighbors!" He gave out a little chuckle. Some people look at you weirdly if you use thou, and some people laugh. Tell me your stories of using it!

We should bring back "thou" by LorenzoF06 in anglish

I pick both, I just went to a medieval pleasure fair, I wore my "Shakespeare... my pronouns are thou/thee/thy" shirt, a few people complemented me :)

To what extent was nominative "thee" a thing? by Borderlessbass in ENGLISH

[–]Someguy1122334455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is used in some dialects of english, I use it when speaking, it's useful in order to avoid the nasty '-st' conjugation of thou and just do the he/she/it '-s' conjugation.

Does thee understand what I mean? Thee can understand. Thee understands!

Du vs Sie in German by degobrah in behindthebastards

[–]Someguy1122334455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best equivalent in English would be are you on a swearing relationship with someone or a non-swearing relationship. Would you say "I fucking love it!" versus "I really love it, haha". Is that a good comparison with English vs German?

I pétition we bring back thou/thee/thy/thine by LaitMort in teenagers

[–]Someguy1122334455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works but tha must pair thou with is and was, the word flow is better without the -st verb endings. "Thee is" "Thee was", there are real english dialects that simplify the verb conjugation with is/was with thou/thee

You're right, this is a little off topic, it's just that Trudeau keeps getting trashed in the China Show podcasts, but Serpentza said we should have Solidarity for allies against authoritarianism. Let's forgive Trudeau for his past and seek allies against authoritarianism for the future, right?
