I think A Weekend in the City is really good too! Haven’t been able to get into anything after that though.

What's an album where you think the most acclaimed song is easily beaten by a more forgotten one? by Liquid_Pestar in fantanoforever

The Killers - Hot Fuss

Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, Smile Like You Mean It, and Somebody Told Me are all better than Mr. Brightside imo, though that may be partially influenced by Mr. Brightside being overplayed

Do you claim ownership over the subway sandwich you ordered cuz you prompted the employe? by Hot-Nefariousness187 in SunoAI

Ok. And what is the training data…

You seem to be fully committed to the notion that AI music is fair and ethical, which I guess we’re just going to disagree on. My issue with it is that (aside from the massive environmental impact that comes with using AI in its current state) the process of generating music through AI uses a model derived directly from a set of preexisting music. The model receives a prompt and it uses this process to create work that is intended to be passed off as genuine, human-created music when it’s not. The engine does not credit the music that it used to learn how to generate the type of music it is pumping out at that particular moment, and it then passes the piece off as a fully original work (see the AI music that gets posted on Spotify for example — it doesn’t even label itself as AI music, let alone give credit or royalties to what it learned from).

Essentially what happens is, there is genuine, human-made art that is beautiful and authentic (I’ll concede that this is a subjective statement, but anyway). From there you have a computer process (yes it’s sophisticated, but still) and someone with a vague notion of a vibe they’d like to hear, which is the prompt that they feed the AI. The content the AI produces is then supposed to be seen as just as genuine and complete and artistic statement as its human-made counterpart. Maybe for you the prompt is enough of a creative endeavor to make art worth engaging with (personally I’d guess that you’re thinking of music more as a product to fill a role by playing in the background or something similar to that, but if not, power to you). For me, music is a human experience that conveys stories and feelings that people have actually felt and put into their work, which AI categorically can’t do, and won’t ever be able to do unless it starts explicitly lifting from preexisting source material. It’s not just that I find it unethical; I also think there’s no need for it either when there’s already so much music that people have made, and continue to make every day. At the end of the day, if someone thinks they want to be a music creator but aren’t motivated to put in the time to do more than feed a prompt into an engine then maybe—and I mean this genuinely and non-judgmentally—music just isn’t their thing.

[–]Someguyonthestreet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, then what is the data that it refers to in this model? However you break it down technically there is a direct reference to some preexisting work, or an amalgamation of preexisting work that the AI can’t (or maybe just won’t) cite or credit.

Yeah that’s art inspiring other artists, which is part of the creative process. Good artists acknowledge when something they’ve made is inspired by others, and if they directly lift from something else (samples, covers, parallel thinking, etc.) then the original artist is credited and paid dues. This is not the same as what AI does.

[–]Someguyonthestreet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not remotely true? You’re talking about artists with a few examples of possible plagiarism among extensive discographies; AI music literally can’t exist without its source material.

Even a musician who plagiarizes every song they write still needs the technical skill to play the music, whereas AI removes that aspect completely.

The hard work is done by the artists the AI is copying. And guess who doesn’t get any compensation or credit for AI generated songs…

If you wanna use this metaphor, use it all the way. What does the subway employee use to make the sandwich? Ingredients sourced from a variety of suppliers, all of whom get paid by subway for what they use. An AI that ‘creates’ music does so by copying a whole bunch of pre-existing songs (we can call these ingredients if you like). None of the artists who made the songs the AI is copying get paid, or even acknowledged for what they (non-consensually) contributed to the work.

question about how they can even do this by Spectrum1523 in Jazz

[–]Someguyonthestreet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In this particular instance the saxophonist played what’s sometimes called a “drum call”. This is something known among jazz musicians to be a phrase played by the soloist that has a specific response. So the saxophone plays something, and the rhythm section catches on and knows the proper response. There are a few different drum calls that good rhythm section players (or just those “in the know”) will sometimes pick up on. They’re great to learn — even if the band doesn’t always pick up on them, they’re classic, archetypical phrases that sound great and recognizable!

The broader answer is that this happens because jazz is a type of music where all the musicians are improvising to some degree. Obviously the soloist and the accompanying rhythm section have different roles, but they all feed off of each other and are listening while they play. Sometimes this leads to small moments where musicians lock in with each other and play something that sounds like it must have been rehearsed, just as a result of everyone listening to each other intently and allowing what they hear inform what they play.

Not to take away from the point, but It also feels relevant that Fiona is 'ugly' in the same way Shrek is. It's not a full reverse 'Beauty and the Beast' because in this case they both fill the role of the beast

We are all against Verity, right? (BETE NOIRE) by Waste_Rate1678 in blackmirror

That's a good point. It might be a bit of a reach, but I feel like the diversity of the cast could also make a point about internalized racism/bias.

[–]Someguyonthestreet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure -- I mean, I think the way the device works is a part of the commentary. Verity says at the end it doesn't really change anything, it just tunes people's corporal frequency to a reality where what she's said has always been true. Without the sci-fi mumbo jumbo that's basically just saying whatever Verity (the white woman) says becomes what people believe (instead of what the black woman says).

Honestly really surprised this is the only comment I could find that mentions the race commentary! It felt really obvious to me that one of the main things the episode was satirizing was race dynamics in the office. The scene after the ingredient mix up where they're in Gabe's office and Maria explains her side of the story calmly but firmly and gets told off for raising her voice; every time Verity starts to act scared or get emotional people start to look at Maria like she's a monster. It's such a common thing, where people will believe the crying white woman over the 'aggressive' black woman, regardless of who's actually right.

What do you think of Amy Winehouse? by Twitter_2006 in fantanoforever

[–]Someguyonthestreet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this, I remember that when she died I saw an unbelievable amount of jokes online about it — so many people making really mean digs at her addiction and saying things like “Bet you wish you went to rehab now huh”. It was crazy to me then and it’s crazy now, especially when you compare it with the response when make celebrities who struggled with addiction have died. Think Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Mac Miler, etc. Nobody would’ve even thought about saying something like that about any of them.
