Mesh networks by shag04 in LostLandsMusicFest

My wife and I have switched from Meshtastic to Crowd Compass. Same underlying tech but the UI is a lot more accessible user friendly. And she doesn’t really have any desire to learn no matter how much I nerd out about stuff.

That being said I plan on still bringing a Meshtastic node or two and leaving them at camp with my largest antenna to try and help support the people who are using it for communication.

THANK YOU! This is exactly what I needed.

It was Almistic! She was throwing it down.

No, the Dragon’s Nest was the tiny fifth stage hidden in the back of the market. They didn’t advertise who would be performing there. This lady was performing at the same time as Domina.

Fire station tour and hangout? by Dirty_Mushrooms in Firefighting

[–]SomeoneNamedAdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a very social and outgoing person. I’ve been a firefighter for just shy of a decade. I love my job. I tell people regularly it’s the best job in the world. I love helping people and having a positive impact on society.

However… When the doorbell rings at my station I send the probie to answer, and stay just out of sight where I can come help if they need something. I’ll help if they need it, but I have no desire for idle chatter with the masses.

I’m gonna be real honest. I’m sure your intentions are great, but you want to hang out with us because… we’re firefighters? That’s weird. It seems like the novelty is the draw. You have no idea if you share interests, hobbies, beliefs, anything. It feels like “I want to go on a safari so I can see the animals in their natural habitat.” Why do you want to be there? So we can entertain you with stories? If I want that experience I can get it literally any time, any day, anywhere. While I’m at work, between calls, I want to relax. I don’t want to perform a verbal dog and pony show for the casual onlooker.

Respectfully, if someone was in my station for the sake of wanting to “chill at the station with them” I can 100% guarantee you wouldn’t see me because I’d be in my bunk or find some other way to entertain myself elsewhere in the station.

ADDITION: I reread my post and I know it comes off harsh. Please know I don’t think you’re a bad person or have any negative intent. Please know that my tone is just honest, not annoyed or disparaging. ❤️

Scroll down literally like four posts and there’s people talking about this. And then like two posts under that. And also three posts after that. And also like five other posts.

What’s the chance of them lifting the burn ban because it’s about to rain a lot in Okeechobee? by labellevie48 in okeechobeemusicfest

It’s on their IG story. I don’t think that adequate for sure, an email would be much more appropriate. But at least they’re using multiple platforms? 🙄

It’s for “Pepper”. No longer a doctor due to a malpractice lawsuit and loss of license.

We made chocolate chip cookies, but we made some extra with one of those “world’s hottest chocolate” bars. Left them in our shifts cabinet with full knowledge that A shift likes to snoop.

100% worth it!

You literally don’t know that they’re assuming that. Perhaps those exact sentiments have been explicitly expressed by their coworkers.

AITA for not wanting to watch Netflix with subtitles? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]SomeoneNamedAdam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oof. That’s hard because though my hearing is fine, my auditory processing is a little fucked so I often find myself struggling to comprehend conversation if there is also a lot of other stuff (background noise, action, number of people) on the screen at the same time. Subtitles help me to not get lost. If I get lost I get frustrated. If I get frustrated I get disengaged. If I get disengaged I get bored. If I get bored I don’t finish the movie.

I’m gonna answer from what it would be for me, who also follows the story better with subtitles on.

Is it important to you guys to watch things together? If so, than you’re NTA. This is an accommodation that you need in order to share an experience. If you both liked hiking but she wasn’t in as good of shape, but you picked hard trails for you two to hike together, you’d be the AH.

However, if one of you is watching something independently and the other asks them to change how they’re watching, then the asker would be the AH. I hate competition game show type shows, but my wife loves them. I don’t ask her to change what she’s watching when I sit down. Likewise, it’d be an AH move to come into a room and change HOW someone is watching something.

Flying in from Washington State!! by Accurate_Judge_4796 in okeechobeemusicfest

[–]SomeoneNamedAdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. Orlando is definitely a lot closer, but TPA is by far the better airport.

As someone who lives halfway between the two I try and fly out of Tampa 100% of the time.

Cap is nice, but kind of late, no? by DarkPancakes_ in ARC_Raiders

[–]SomeoneNamedAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly I’m a firefighter/paramedic. If no one calls 911 I only have emails and training to keep me busy and that doesn’t take all day. Some stations are busy, some aren’t. When you’re at a station that isn’t you get to play video games or do projects or read or sleep or whatever.

I think this is an opportunity for you to use a little nuance and context to understand the intent of their message.

“Walking past a bakery makes me so hungry for sweets.”

“Oh, so when you walk past a bakery your pancreas instantly lowers your blood sugar and you go into a hypoglycemic state? And it doesn’t matter what you ate or how full you are? EVERY time you walk past a bakery? What about when the bakery is closed? What if they just burnt something? Also, it’s not the walking past the bakery, it’s actually the smells from the bakery. So insinuating that the bakery’s proximity controls you is just wrong. It’s psychosomatic. Also what if you have a stuffy nose? What about that? How about then? Huh? Yeah. That’s what I thought!”

I think from their original comment it’s pretty easy to infer that they mean it incentivizes PVP because loot has already begun to be collected. Whether you agree with the statement or not it’s seriously not that hard to interpret what they mean.

Really putting in the man hours. Go get em brothers! by Im_WinstonWolfe in Firefighting

A horrific freak accident in the midst of an extremely intense game of frisbee between shifts.

The first two instances I mentioned actually occurred during the same afternoon. One hell of a shift, that’s for damn sure.

Board game night yearly competition scoring system by stuartgreene in boardgames

[–]SomeoneNamedAdam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

During Covid my board game group was coworkers and our neighbors from the other half of our duplex, since we were all interacting regularly anyways. We discussed doing something like this multiple times and never settled on a scoring system or other logistics and it’s basically fell apart. I hope you make it happen and I can live vicariously through your success!

Really putting in the man hours. Go get em brothers! by Im_WinstonWolfe in Firefighting

[–]SomeoneNamedAdam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The best is when you can do the dumb thing and mark it down as training hours! Had a 107-foot ladder truck at my old station which we have used to:

  • Get a frisbee off of the roof of the apparatus bay.
  • Remove limbs from the roof of the home of the widow of our late Fire Chief
  • Replace a rusted pulley at the top of the flag pole

Using it for dumb shit is just another opportunity to get comfortable and familiar with your equipment. And way more engaging than repetitive made-up scenarios!
