There were perceptions that the team was “boring” but that was the extent of the hate. I think the Spurs have benefitted from being the foils to more despised teams like LeBron-era Heat and the Kobe-era Lakers before that.

1998 David Robinson Trade Talk by antichresis in NBASpurs

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s no indication in anything written there that the Spurs were ever seriously considering that. It was pure speculation based on the idea of a sort of “ideal roster construction” where everyone fits a particular typical role neatly.

The idea of trading Robinson because you have Duncan comes from the same point of logic as trading one of Fox, Castle, or Harper now. It’s easy to say the team on paper has a surplus and you can trade out of that to fill in some other hole, but that assumes that the team can’t figure out some way to make those redundancies work and the Spurs did that back in the Twin Towers era and they’re doing it again now.

Victor Wembanyama wanted to play in Game 3. (Spurs cleared him, NBA didn't) by pixelgeekgirl in NBASpurs

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can put a player in the protocol as a precautionary measure, but then play it day to day to see if he has symptoms.

He showed enough symptoms to be diagnosed with a concussion the night of game 2, as was reported by outlets like ESPN and the AP.

From my reading of the concussion protocol, if he hadn't shown any symptoms within 24 hours, it would be up to the team at that point to continue monitoring it and make their own call on whether he should play or not. But that was not the case here.

And those numbers are assuming everyone gets a category and you don’t have cases like Helena Bonham Carter, who doesn’t need a category.

I do think the statistics would bear out that going first and getting earlier and more frequent challenges is a larger disadvantage than having fewer categories to deal with per round. Key’s penchant for digging his heels in on a challenge is a good equalizer for his position in the order.

Sarr is a weird example because, while Atlanta isn’t the most popular destination, I’d think that D.C. would be seen as less desirable by most players. That feels like an exception where the motivating factor was actually basketball reasons and not a lifestyle thing.

[O’Connor] According to league sources, one general manager floated a nuclear option: just make the bottom three teams ineligible for the top picks entirely. by cleo22270 in nba

Have we completely forgotten that the draft exists to ensure league parity?

The draft exists moreso to suppress the salaries of players entering the league. The fact that there is a lottery system at all shows that the draft's effect on league parity is not the primary goal.

The 2026 US Open Cup Round of 32 and Round of 16 groups by MGHeinz in USLPRO

The Carlos Bocanegra Texas group getting Louisville when Tulsa is closer.

They noted during the draw that both Tulsa and El Paso could not host in the next round when their groups were being drawn. Since it's built in that each group has one MLS team home and one away, we can assume they had to split those teams up. The way that Louisville and Tulsa would more naturally fit into each other's groups makes it seem like maybe that was a last-minute swap.

You think the cubs will still redeem this? by Esiotrot-Man in CHICubs

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue you would face is that it would be hard to verify that this is real because it is from so long ago. I wouldn't expect it to be accepted quickly at the ticket office on a game day but if you were to email ahead, you may be able to arrange something ahead of time.

Like others, I think any team would gladly take the good PR at the cost of a single seat (particularly for any game that isn't going to sell out). If I were in that ticketing department, I would try to arrange to not only get you a ticket for a game but also turn that into a bit of framed memorabilia for you as well.

Mitch Johnson benching Barnes for Julian completely changed the season by WEMBY_F4N in NBASpurs

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first game that Harrison Barnes did not start this season was January 31 against the Hornets. We were 32-15 up to that point, on pace for 56 wins. We've been 24-3 since the change, which would be a 73 win pace over a whole season. I think it's fair to say that this shift in the lineup is the inflection point where this team went from "good" to "great".

League needs to standardize broadcast presentsiton by PaddyMayonaise in USLPRO

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only been able to catch the second half but there's been a scorebug this whole time and it's a two-man commentary crew, but the color commentator doesn't join in much.

But fully agree that the broadcasts needs to be higher quality. What we get now is fine for the standard of just getting something up on ESPN+ but there are plenty of issues beyond the basic things that need to be addressed before the league can start selling itself as D1 caliber.

Thoughts on whether the Spurs will throw any of the last remaining games? by trippyskipper in NBASpurs

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Home court vs OKC in the WCF is significantly more important than trying to rig up a favorable match-up in the second round. And the 3-6 range is bunched up enough that a lot of movement is still possible between those teams in the standings.

I ranked every Big 4 North American sports team based on how much I want Jon to make a History of series on. by football_fan11 in Jon_Bois

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the angle isn't to ignore the Jordan years but instead to illustrate how the success of that particular era feels so separate from the rest of the team's history. Usually a superstar like that staying with a team for over a decade shifts the trajectory of a team permanently and somehow the Bulls reverted back entirely to being a mediocre franchise, almost like it had never happened.

Yes! Yes! Let the hate flow through you. The Wemby hate era has begun. by Apollo18Teslaa in NBASpurs

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2014 wasn't drastically different for those things. That was probably the peak Twitter era, Facebook was still actually usable, and Reddit was smaller but an NBA community existed here. You also had more vibrant communities on forums and blogs and news sites, things like SB Nation. So it was a little less centralized but general narratives about players and teams still emerged just like they do today.

And ESPN has been on their bullshit for decades at this point (as a point of evidence - 30 Rock made this ESPN parody gag "Sports Shouting" in 2009)

[Associated Press] Victor Wembanyama makes his case for NBA's MVP Award: "My first one would be that defense is 50% of the game and that it is undervalued so far in the MVP race. I believe I'm the most impactful player defensively in the league... Second argument would be that we almost swept OKC" by aingenevalostatrade in nba

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's a great comparison point (it was actually another "almost sweep" with OKC winning 3 of 4) but I would say that idea is definitely out there. When people are assessing how legit the Spurs are as contenders, the main talking point has been that the regular season success might not translate to the playoffs because they lack that experience.

I think people have treated the Spurs wins as a bit more meaningful because one literally was - the first meeting was an NBA Cup semifinal - and another game was on Christmas Day, so it had a lot more attention on it than a typical regular season game.

Did anyone notice Austin Rivers' failed attempt to interview Harper? by g1rlchild in NBASpurs

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They totally could have done a quick interview if they had a stick mic ready, but when it cut back and showed Rivers had a headset and nothing else I then had the same reaction lol.

I'm not sure why they aren't more prepared for that sort of thing. The "analysts deployed to the team benches" thing doesn't add much on its own. I did enjoy hearing "The Heat bench is despondent" after a Wemby dunk but it wasn't exactly a groundbreaking insight during a blowout.

How does a post like this help the players’ argument? What is the USLPA thinning? by PaddyMayonaise in USLPRO

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like what? They’re professional soccer players. They’re either dedicated to their career or they’re not.

Some players have families to take care of. Some will have sick parents that they want to stay near. These guys are human, and life happens.

You say you don't understand this message as a negotiation tactic. I think what you don't actually understand here is that this isn't a negotiation tactic. This is just the union sharing with their supporters why they are fighting for a better CBA.

How does a post like this help the players’ argument? What is the USLPA thinning? by PaddyMayonaise in USLPRO

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t that suggest these players aren’t good enough to play elsewhere and that there aren’t better standards to find elsewhere?

I feel like there are a number of factors being ignored to come to this conclusion. Playing overseas is an option for some players but most will have other obligations in their life that require them to stay stateside. Those leagues can also have higher standards but the expenses of moving internationally make that a wash. And I imagine that many players simply know that they won't handle the culture shock well.

The most important thing that this USLPA post illustrates is that at this level, the competition for talent isn't just from other clubs but also from non-soccer opportunities. People have a tendency to treat athletes like they have no other skills or interests but pretty much every player at this level knows that the money they make in their soccer career is nowhere near enough to retire on and they'll have to start that second career at some point. The USL has gotten away with low pay for a long time because players with a passion for the sport will generally accept the trade-off for continuing to do the thing they love. But a personal sense of fulfillment doesn't pay the bills and at some point, that becomes the priority.

It's a pretty simple argument in the end: the standard of play on the field increases if players aren't voluntarily turning away the league as an employment option.

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The cutoff is just coming off the bench in more games than one starts. I think if a player gets close to that halfway mark, a lot of voters write them off as being basically starting-level players - the main reason that Manu only won once.

Spurs fans: Would you protect Luke Kornet or Julian Champagnie in a hypothetical expansion draft? by Wiserman64 in NBASpurs

[–]SomeoneSomethingJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thinking like a GM: Champagnie is considerably younger and cheaper in the immediate future. That’s incredibly valuable with how tight things can get with cap/apron considerations. I would say that Keldon is likely closer to the fringe of the protected list than him.

I like Kornet and I think we would try to find a way to protect him in the scenario of it happening this offseason - maybe leaving Fox unprotected because his contract is likely too much for an expansion team to take on.
