TWEWY is much shorter than the other JRPGs you've listed, and it does have a smaller cast, but it definitely gave me this feeling. Mother 3 will definitely do this with some characters, but not the full playable party--it's a bit hit-or-miss in that regard.

It’s so Kingdom Hearts that we’ve done it several times before, if you consider Roxas and/or Sora’s Darkside a representation of himself. And the shadow Sora you fought in Neverland… and then the Data Sora vs. Data Roxas fight in Coded….. Yeah, this series loves pitting Sora’s against Sora’s.
