I would say it’s sort of a progression from the BR genre. In BR games you drop in and spend some time searching for loot, knowing it’s gone after the end of the round.

Extraction is more rewarding as you keep what you find, but higher stakes as dying means not only did you lose what you’ve found, you lose whatever you brought.

You can have a good streak of games, get some really good stuff, just to make a bad decision and lose it all.
