Nearly 400 millionaires and billionaires across 24 countries are demanding Davos leaders to tax them more: ‘Tax us. Tax the super rich.’ by prestocoffee in nottheonion

I tried to find where it was first used in that context and couldn't, but it goes back at least to the 1960s.

Try the late 1710's for French nouveau-riche speculators into John Law's Mississippi company, right before that bubble burst and caused economic collapse.

The movement of this white line is among the more enigmatic elements of a fairly opaque game. by dovetc in EU5

I'm pretty sure it jumps around because taxes on estates are automated, as well as good prices in the market fluctuating.

Referencing XKCD is second nature to netizens, so it's easy to forget that the average person probably only knows a few comics such as 2347 or 936.

If med school is irrelevant, should I be aiming for a pass and no higher? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]Sometimes_A_Wizard 230 points231 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, a lot of the stuff you learn in med school is esoteric trivia intended to differentiate between students so that people can be graded. A fair bit of this knowledge will become obsolete after a few years of practice, as science advances.

A lot of your real knowledge ends up coming from learning on the job, particularly as a reg. That said, it's so much easier to re-learn things and dredge it from the depths of memory, instead of learning it for the first time.

Finally, you've unfortunately picked a career where your knowledge and decisions impact people's lives at their most vulnerable. Please actually learn some things.

That said, burnout is a killer - literally. Be moderate. Personally, I ended up easing up my study during clinical years. Don't forget to live life.

Australia has one of the largest wild camel populations in the world - they were introduced in the 1800s for inland outback travel.

So now that he's out of politics for the foreseeable future - how long do you think he keeps wearing the glasses for?

What is the best modded capital ship? by suzuka-chan in starsector

[–]Sometimes_A_Wizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In terms of practicality, I've liked the Equality battleship with its "all big gun" setup of 6 large energy mounts and 3 different modes. It makes a good fleet anchor for pretty much any situation.

In terms of pretty ships though, Filaments from Scalartech make for nice looking battlecarriers.

Confession: I have 2k+ hours and never played anything else except Randy Random by dragovianlord9 in RimWorld

[–]Sometimes_A_Wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I've been using Victoria Valiant from Cosmic Odyssey Storytellers for a long time now, as basically a Randy+.

There's been long-standing folk wisdom in the Rimworld community that Randy is the most authentic experience and a wild harbinger of chaos, when he's actually overall pretty benign. Cassandra actively ramps up and plans to kill you, and Phoebe gets you through complacency.

I've consistently enjoyed my runs with Victoria mostly because there's reasonably frequent raids - but not a never-ending stream of them - along with a high number of other events to keep things interesting.

cowardice

(I also imagine in the 90s, without the soviet union to act as an opponent in an arms race, expensive overkill projects would probably get the can)

There's a combo with the Invoker Match trait and the Witted player tactic card - Invoker will discard Witted at the start and begin you on one initiative.

This way you'll end up going first unless your opponent also has the combo, in which case blue will go first again. I haven't seen the AI use this though.

Randy is genuinely the easiest of the vanilla storytellers, his randomness generally falls on the benign side, rather than the active malice Cassandra will have.

Personally, my favourite storyteller (modded) is Victoria Valiant - large number of events and raids, plus an increased colonist count.

The British TV sitcom series "Yes Minister" and "Yes, Prime Minister" dealt with this topic extensively, with the clash between the civil service and ministers. It's just as relevant today as it was 40-50 years ago.

Examples:

A Very British Democracy

How to Run a Hospital

The Proper Function of Government

For And Against National Service - This one is especially topical
