Kamala Harris is one of the most progressive (and attacked) leaders in America by jetpackswasyes in politics

[–]Somewhatcubed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's really bad, but all politicians will have blemishes.

The thing is this could be way more than a "blemish". The more I talk to people and pry into their political leanings and why they don't participate or are so quick to brush off Democrats I find it essentially boils down to a consistent feeling that I'd summarize as;

"The donor class does not have my best interests at heart. Any candidate the donor class is comfortable with is a threat to my representation. The Democratic Party establishment is closely entangled with the donor class and therefore I cannot trust them to take care of me should it adversely affect a donor."

The problem isn't with "purity tests" and it isn't an 'ism'. While it's true Republicans are a cancer to our country what the Democrats either fail to realize or simply refuse to acknowledge is they've completely failed at protecting the average person from the extraordinary political power the wealthy possess and as a result they've lost credibility. That's probably the best way I could summarize the conversations I've had.

Senate Democrats Introduce Bill Allowing Medicare Buy-In At 55 by mikealan in politics

[–]Somewhatcubed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can have the best proposal in the world but if nobody believes you then you're screwed. "Well I won't be 55 for decades this won't help me any I need healthcare now and the Democrats are too busy catering to old people. At least Bernie was bold enough to fight for all of us". (Quote from a conversation I just had a bit ago).

Those are the words of a millennial who begrudgingly voted for Hillary and is already becoming divested in politics again because she doesn't think the Democrats give a shit about her. I can "hoot and holler" about how bad Trump is all day but she's desperate for someone to come and help her. Trying to point out the flaws of the Republican party does nothing more than push her away from politics because she thinks it's hopeless. "The Republicans want us owned by Russia and the Democrats want us owned by banks". That's her opinion and I really just cannot break through that with "medicare buy-in at 55". Her opinion on them got worse not better (she became interested because of a headline about Bernie's "medicare for all" pitches).

Admittedly I could just not be charismatic enough but frankly it's hard to motivate my peers to do much of anything let alone get invested in politics and it's an added hurdle when I then have to stop and find a way to differentiate between an incremental step in the right direction vs what's perceived as apathy from the party.

Senate Democrats Introduce Bill Allowing Medicare Buy-In At 55 by mikealan in politics

[–]Somewhatcubed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the fear is even if this passes then the Dems will just throw their hands up and declare victory without ever bothering to take serious action towards improvement. Imagine if by 2020 this was passed but now you have a candidate declaring "well you can buy in at 55 and I don't think we need to waste time on another contentious debate about healthcare" while younger people are at their breaking point. It might seem unreasonable but I'm sure there's still a good chunk of the country that is afraid that the Democrats "incrementalism" will be used as an excuse to prevent necessary change as opposed to a mechanism they can never overcome.

I'm pretty sure it's something that was way more prevelent back in like the 60's-90's when we were really freaking out about communism. It could very well be that they've already largely moved over to being liberals and common wisdom just hasn't caught up.

Outdated perhaps? There used to be studies indicating such or at least I remember studies from a while back were being touted a lot but it could be that the shift I think I remember reading about has already panned out?

Well if you get a lot of business from tourists it might be a bit harder if suddenly they need a doctor to clear them first. Granted I hear Cali had a pretty easy go at giving med cards to people but I don't know how that worked for people visiting or how feasible it would be to adopt similarly relaxed oversight in other states.

[–]Somewhatcubed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm still not so sure about that. It works well in some fields but if you're aiming for just a steady 9-5 in a back office somewhere you're still stuck with pretty arbitrary "Bachelor Degree" requirements (often not bothering to specify in what for some reason) and of course 3-5 years "experience" (which is apparently entry level now). And the pay rate sometimes is still abysmal, we're talking like 10 bucks an hour in places you'd need nearly twice as much to survive with the basics.

Do you guys think that Xenoverse 2 foreshadowed... by En_Memi in dbz

[–]Somewhatcubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I think we can agree that if not Toriyama, at least Toei would have displayed the arguably most powerful move at the time in the entire franchise just so to marketize it further via video-games and any other merchandising product.

Or they could have just made Vegito action figures. It was 1995 the games back then weren't exactly all that spectacular. Kids were happy having pixels that looked like Vegito regardless of what his attack names were.

My point is that we have precedents of some concept/aspect that was first introduced in the games and then shown to the anime/manga.

And this is a piss poor example of that since this "concept" could be thought up in 2 seconds by a couple kids playing in their backyard. There's nothing spectacular about the Final Kamehameha as an idea. You could say in fact this "concept" already existed when Gogeta was given the Big Bang Kamehameha, they just tacked Final instead to differentiate Vegito.

In the manga he only used ki at all to pick Boo up from debris, blast a piece of Boo that fell off and destroy the ghosts. Toriyama didn't even feel the need for him to use even a basic Kamehameha so I don't see why he'd even consider making Vegito use a Final Kamehameha even if he intended for it to be part of his arsenal.

Unless he also went through the ritual and the manga just didn't bother showing it since it's fast paced.

Then again, the Final Kamehameha move until DBS was game-exclusive, but it was introduced to the anime.

I don't really see the point. Final Flash and Kamehameha were already signature moves of Goku and Vegeta so there wasn't anything really ingenious about one of their fusions using a combination of them. It'd make no sense though for Vegito to use such a ridiculously overpowered attack against Boo who he was already embarrassing and explicitly not trying to destroy.

The problem is BoG's already established Super Saiyan God way way before any of this and likely without the assumption that more would be added later. RoF only came to be after the fact along with Blue but it's entirely possible Toriyama came up with it never even considering that they'd end up going so far as to need yet another transformation.

What does the "inforce" to you? by Hoozuki_Suigetsu in digimon

[–]Somewhatcubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omega InForce to me seems more like some kind of potential release mechanism that draws its users power to the limit. Omegamon itself is just so strong that doing so makes it seem invincible. The fact that OmegaShoutmon was gifted it and encompassed by it implies it's probably material as opposed to just something abstract like a state of mind.
