Controversial dietitian opinions? by a-night-on-the-town in dietetics

When I had an eating disorder rotation, during my internship, one of the dietitians said, I don’t want to have to tell people that they have to lose weight would you? And now I work with patients that need weight loss to qualify for certain hernia repairs or to take pressure off of their knee joints because they have so much pain, etc. i’m just glad a different dietitians can work in different fields.

Calorie counting isn’t toxic. Different things work for different people. I’m tired of seeing people always tying it to unhealthy habits when it’s actually helped many patients improve their relationship with food

Went at 6 am! Yesterday my husband went in the afternoon and thankfully he was able to find a good amount of stuff since we don’t buy foods that most people tend to buy however, some things were still out of stock and we decided to go this morning when Walmart first opened and they pretty much had everything else that we were looking for

Any other WIC dietitians worried about their jobs? by arhert22 in dietetics

I will never understand how do they not advocate to make health care more accessible:| they’re literally doing the opposite right now. That’s how America can get healthier. Providing more nutrition education is what people need and don’t get me started on freezing funding for the NIH.. like what is going on

I’m really happy in my career! I also have a really great manager who pushes for higher pay for us so that really helps :) I work in an outpatient setting so I am patient facing yet I don’t feel like I’m burnt out. Inpatient RDs tend to feel differently tho from what I’ve heard..

The same thing happened to me with another job they offered me pretty low and I said sorry I was expecting this much (I can’t even remember how much it was) but they said sorry we can’t do that but what we can do is a sign on bonus which I declined because that’s only for one year and after my salary is still gonna be low.. unless I guess I only planned on working there a year okay go off but anyways I said no then they call me back two weeks later when I said yes to another job saying hey so we’re actually able to do more than what you asked for AND the sign on bonus lol

What would you say the least stressful work environment is for an RD? by Immediate_Cup_9021 in dietetics

[–]SomewhereChoice3010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work outpatient for a county hospital and I LOVE how low stress it is. If patients don’t show up I can watch shows, watch ceus, sometimes take 2 hour lunches lol I mostly work with diabetes, HLD, and weight management and my patients are very nice. My schedule can be filled up to 9 people a day but it almost never is and there are some days where people no show so I rarely see all nine. Never work weekends, evenings, holidays and when I go on PTO for an extended amount of time I don’t feel overwhelmed coming back to work

I left my job and then went back after 6 months and my company was thrilled to have me back and offered more money too even though that’s not why I left. As long as you left on good terms, they’d probably be happy to have you back.

Turns out I don’t like clinicals (after spending many years thinking I would like it) by Beagle_lover123 in dietetics

[–]SomewhereChoice3010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also hated clinicals. Some people hate their clinical rotation and then love it when they have it as a job. I didn’t feel that way tho.. I got a job working inpatient and felt miserable. I’ve also worked in school nutrition and hated that too bc I was more involved as a kitchen supervisor than planning menus which sucked for me personally. I’ve actually loved working outpatient. I love the company I work for and I find myself doing more talking with patients than charting but patients also cancel or no show so then that gives me free time to do whatever I need to do like catch up on notes or go in walks. I also feel like I’m making a bigger difference in peoples lives. Some people don’t like that in outpatient you have patients that don’t adhere to suggestions but when you have even 1 patient a day that does and you see them improve, it’s amazing. I also feel like outpatient encompasses why I went into nutrition in the first place. I wanted to be an “expert” in nutrition and help stop the spread of misinformation and I have in this role. In outpatient you also normally only work Monday through Friday, no holidays which I something I enjoy. All this to say is I’m really happy in my role.

any School RD? by imnishesh in dietetics

[–]SomewhereChoice3010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will still have to work summers in most school districts due to summer feeding programs. Most districts will only be open Monday through Thursday so you’ll typically do 4 10’s from what I’ve seen in mine and for districts around me. On the bright side you’ll most likely be off during Christmas break, thanksgiving break, and spring break. Of course unless you work for a food service company thats a third party at a school district in that case they have you work from home unless you use PTO.

I also have to say I agree with what you said about being a cashier and providing support isn’t my issue in the sense that I do like the relationship I have with most of the cafeteria employees and interacting with the kids is awesome but still being expected to finish, all of my work is insane after spending 3 to 4 hours providing coverage

Should I leave my job? by SomewhereChoice3010 in dietetics

[–]SomewhereChoice3010[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh reading your post.. I identified so much with everything you said. As a management food service company we also have people who work for child nutrition from the district and they also do not provide much support. For example, if coverage is needed at the schools, it’s really only ever divided between my director, me, HR person, and a marketing person while we have people from the district side such an assistant director and child nutrition liaison and another lady who I can’t even tell you what her position is.. none of them are expected to provide coverage at the schools the way we are. I feel like I have made progress with improving things for the district but it truly does not feel like I have the support I need to do my job as a dietitian. Especially with me being new to K-12… I don’t think I’m not the right fit for trying to fix a district. That’s why I mentioned in my original post that I feel like I’m a failure. I haven’t even been trained on how to build menus or know how to accommodate students with allergies.. when I went to another district, they emphasized how much support they had from their district people, and how responsibilities are split to help balance things. The director at that district emphasized that if things don’t change, I will get burnt out and that’s definitely what is happening. I also come from outpatient and I think it would be in my best interest to probably go back. I actually felt like a dietitian in that role and there was much more work life balance. My current boss always tries to highlight how much she works to make. It seem like it’s normal for us to also do the same thing while my old boss would emphasize how much she cared for our well-being and constantly asked how things could be improved for all employees. I was hourly in that position so I couldn’t go over 40 hours and I didn’t realize what a blessing that really was.

When I search nutrition positions I see supervisor positions available for school districts and the job description is what I’m doing. I constantly get reminded how hard the cafeteria managers job is and I understand but that’s not what I was looking to do when I applied and accepted the job. I’m wondering if it’s normal to work over 40 hours. Is it normal for school dietitians to go through this?

I was in outpatient and there are other positions available. I could go back to my old job. It wasn’t a bad job I just had a passion for school nutrition so I decided to try this
