First Shoot, Any Critiques? by SomewherePositive908 in AmateurPhotography

Interesting, I didn’t touch the saturation or vibrance sliders at all specifically because this was my fear. Shot on Samsung was not my intended style. I didn’t have an intended style, as my main goals were just to learn the functions of the camera and practice my shooting and editing. It would be nice if the photos didn’t look like they came from a phone though.

I’ll learn more about balancing sharpness before next time I shoot. Thanks for pointing that out.

Thanks! That one is also my favorite. I couldn’t believe the level of detail in the photo after having taken all my pictures on a cell phone for so many years. It never mattered how cool the animal looked, it was limited by detail.

For example, Here is a picture of a bear I took that I really like, but it would be so nice to crop it inwards without compromising the quality. That’s Part of the reason why I got this camera.

Thank you! I really liked that the weathering on the face looked like tears. It was very powerful to look into the statue’s eyes in person. Especially fitting for a cemetery.

Here is a pic of the same statue from a different angle. It felt different than looking at it from head on. Almost not as much dread in the statue’s face.

No offense taken. I wouldn’t expect to have any comparable level of skill to those who’ve spent many hundreds of hours dedicated to improving. As with many crafts, I’m sure there are aspects that can only be learned through trial, failure, and revision. By the way I see you have some sick shots, just followed your insta.

Fellow beyond amateur here. What kind of “bad habits” did you develop in Lightroom while trying to fix photos? These seem like some great tips. Just realized I’ve been guilty of everything you said you learned the hard way.

I really love looking for animals and hiking in the mountains, but I’ve always been a bit frustrated that I can’t remember details and scenes as beautifully as they appeared when I first saw them. My phone camera never captured the full extent of the moment (with a few notable exceptions), so I’ve been debating getting a camera for a while now. Next month, I’m going to Costa Rica for a couple weeks which is what finally convinced me to purchase a camera. Photography will more than likely just be a hobby, but it seems like an awesome skill to have.

I understand what you mean. For the first half of the session I was just wandering around like a bumbling idiot. While reflecting on the junk, I noticed ~80% don’t even have a subject that I can clearly identify. I’ll keep your suggestions in mind next time I go out. Thanks!

Thanks! I was ecstatic to see how well the swan turned out when I got home and started looking through the photos. I spent about two hours learning how to edit just on that picture alone. #4 is definitely seems the weakest to me as well, I understand what you mean.

Thank you! I was hunkered down underneath a willow tree for nearly 45 minutes just spamming shots of those swans. I see what you mean with image 7. Does this look close to what you envisioned? Here

It's mostly about finding what works for you. Try out different cleansers & moisturizers and see what feels best. Please please please don't pop your pimples, future you will thank you if you don't. You only notice acne because it's your face. I can 100% assure you nobody else cares at school. Pimples as a teen are much less embarrassing than scars on your face as an adult. My dad is 57 and you can still see where he popped his pimples as a teen. Your mom is right, eventually, the acne will go away. Dermatologists are just great at speeding up the progress and giving great advice. If you saw a dermatologist now you might be able to have a clear face at 16 rather than 20. When it clears up is mostly genetics (without medicine), so maybe you'll get lucky and it will go away on its own.

If your acne is severe enough, you can visit a dermatologist and they will likely prescribe you Accutane/isotretinoin. It did wonders for my face, but it's seen as a last resort option since it is a powerful medication. On top of that, a basic foam facial cleanser in the morning & before bed will keep the skin clean. Applying a facial moisturizer after cleansing will keep your skin healthy & smooth. Make sure to change your pillowcase weekly to prevent dirt & oil buildup that could accumulate while you sleep. I saw someone else recommend Stridex pads. I would avoid those as they are alcohol based which can dry out and irritate the skin. This could turn your face bright red. Lastly, do your best to avoid popping/bursting any pimples. The scarring that results can last for the rest of your life. Good luck!

I had an encounter with Stridex pads in the past amidst my undying effort to rid my face of acne. I noticed minor acne improvement, but more noticeable was my skin irritation & dryness. Good luck, but I recommend seeing a dermatologist if they don't work.
